It doesn't fit in no matter how useful or pretty you think it is.

It shouldn't have to.. We aren't robots on a production line. She payed for her yard and she can do pretty much whatever the fuck she wants to do with it in my opinion.. Not like she's sacrificing cats on her front stoop. We're talking about very useful plant-life here.

Maybe there's better sun in her front yard.

Her front yard would be nice as her backyard but as a front yard I think it's just garish and tacky.

Kinda what I think about your homogenized thought process with these comments.

I have no idea about other neighborhoods but anywhere I have ever lived, anytime a neighbor let their house go, did what they wanted to it or made it look garish/tacky it also brought down the value of the homes around it. I remember when I was selling my home, there was a home across the street for sale as well. It was in bad shape and every realtor who stopped by to look at both my home and theirs always commented that no one would ever buy their home or any home for sale on their side because of that one single house bringing down the value of any one of the others right beside it or directly across from it.

So if we're going to say someone can do what they want to their property that would mean they can let it deteriorate as well and allow the rest of the community to feel the affects on the values of their homes. I personally would not want my home to lose value because of a neighbor.

Of course most people would know I mean within reason..per my statement "Not like she's sacrificing cats on her front stoop."..

This is one of the many reasons I'm moving out to the middle of nowhere... to a place that's less than hospitable to people in general in hopes that the urban life with it's multitude of rules and regulations controlling everything from the height of my grass to the color of my house and everything in between is less likely to occur.

The idea of living so close to busy bodies kinda turns my stomach. I remember when people were less worried about keeping up appearances and were more worried about the actual condition of the home.

I saw Cukes and Icarys, and immediately thought something I ought not to have.
Thankfully it was only a cuke, and not a zucchini. [:-]

DarkSteven -> RE: Use a cuke, go to jail?? (7/9/2011 5:56:03 PM)

The neighborhood has an Orthodox Jewish family, a black woman, etc.  They achieved racial diversity but are using codes to quash diversity of front lawns.  Ironic.

She's built raised beds and mulched in between them.  She obviously put in a lot of effort.

I'd propose a compromise where she grew grass in between the planters.  The question is whether the code enforcement weenies object to the vegetables themselves, or to the lack of a lawn?  Or do they even have a clue what it is they're objecting to?

kalikshama -> RE: Use a cuke, go to jail?? (7/9/2011 6:01:38 PM)

Vegetables are not tacky!

I find this beautiful:

And this homogeneity horrendous:

Some people just want to dig up trouble.  Sowing the seeds of discontent and all that...

She could grow a lot more and have a prettier more condensed productive garden if she read about square foot gardening, imo. I have this guys original book, he has a new revised one out too now. He has taught people in third world countries on how to grow more food by using raised beds and his methods. He gets an amazing amount of food out of a small area.

waaaaaa I want a garden again!!! [sm=river.gif]

DarkSteven -> RE: Use a cuke, go to jail?? (7/9/2011 6:35:57 PM)

Um, they look like raised beds to me.

tj444 -> RE: Use a cuke, go to jail?? (7/9/2011 6:38:21 PM)

yes they are raised beds but they can be made better with better soil (he has a formula) and just using his methods to increase what you get out of them. Nothing wrong at all with what she is doing, just she could get more out of the same space.

Termyn8or -> RE: Use a cuke, go to jail?? (7/9/2011 6:40:24 PM)

"You just know that is who called code enforcement."

She should be afuckingshamed of herself.

And what's worse, these ridiculous codes are all over the place. People need to stop bitching about Obama and Bush and take a look at what is happening in their own "frontyard" . I have heard of people being fined for not having grass, and in most places you can't park a car in your own damn front yard. Many people used to do this. Pull in an old nice 1957 Chevy or something, possibly with a forsale sign on it.

This is not the half of it. Just how much edumacation do you need to install a hot water tank ? Well I did one with a buddy o mine and the guy said, ABSOLUTELY that you have to take the old tank away, because it could not be left out on the tree lawn for the garbage, or scrappers. Why ? Because there was no permit pulled. Bullshit, the leaking tank was discovered after city hall was closed anyway, and we went and picked up a tank at a local DIY store and threw it in. If not, they would have gone to school and work the next day unshowered or coldshowered. Bullshit ! The same guy told us that up the street a neighbor made a stink, I mean called the fucking police because another neighbor had a jetski in their driveway.

Now just where are you supposed to put a jetski, in the livingroom ?

You all put down RealO and Hunky for coming up with this incredulous shit. Is it incredulous now ? Just how many laws are there that you don't know about, that make absolutely no sense except to scare people into paying fines ? (I am not implying they are sane)

And what is in the mind of people who call the police because someone has a vegetable garden, or a jetski ? What the fuck is the matter with them ? What's more, if it really does bother them, other than the fact that they should be shot at sunrise or sooner, they are counterproductive to their cause, whatever that might be because ;

This shit just raised public awareness. Maybe we have been going about this change thing the wrong way. Politicians often work up through the ranks, like councilman, mayor, state rep, congressman, and possibly el presidente. If they are shown on a local level that people will not put up with this shit, maybe they will understand why we want rid of them so much. Why none of the above almost won a senate seat. Why so many people become tired of complying and finally say FUCK YOU. I did. I will never pull a premit for anything, I will never get a license for anything. If a city inspector comes on my property he takes his life in his own hands. Have to remind myself to get some no tresspassing signs, just to be fair to those who could never get a fucking job in the private sector. All the can do is be among the swarm of officers sent to harrass our people.

Do those last eight words ring a bell for anyone ?

T^T

I have seen it at Barnes & Noble too. I didnt get a chance to look at the new book in detail tho.

In his orginial book he showed you how to do a covered (greenhouse) garden, using plastic & rebar (I think) and extend the growing season, then growing winter veggies in them. You going up to alaska, it would be interesting to see just how much you can grow up there...

LinnaeaBorealis -> RE: Use a cuke, go to jail?? (7/9/2011 7:28:52 PM)

This woman did not "let her house & yard deteriorate" like was stated about another house above. Her yard was torn up for the sewer & she has a need to feed her large family healthy food. I don't see the problem. The code as written is subjective, which was possibly the reason for such wording; that way the people enforcing the code could make it mean "whatever we don't like." But it's also going to make it very difficult to enforce.

I hate conformity for conformity's sake!! Buncha fuckin sheeples. I can understand getting upset if your neighbor lets their front yard go to weeds & the seeds blow into your yard, yeah that would be somewhat frustrating. My ex-husband & I bought 5 lots in a little town in WA & put a double-wide mobile on the property. There were I don't know how many 50-foot pine trees on the lot. We told the people putting the mobile on the lot to only cut down what they had to & we just let the lots stay wild, because we loved the idea of living in a forest. The next door neighbor threatened us that he'd turn us in for not having tamed our lots & planted grass & flowers. We never heard a word from the town authorities, but after we sold it & moved away, the people who bought it cut down the trees & put in the generic lawn & flowers & white fence & it looked awful.

And when I say small town, I'm talking about 600 people. No retail businesses, not even mail delivery. We all had PO Boxes & going to get the mail was the highlight of the day, hanging out & chatting with the postmaster. Not even a police department, they share the department from the next town up the road, which was huge!!! 2000 people.

I thought that her doing what she did improved the neighborhood. And the bitch who turned her in was just that: the neighborhood bitch!!
