Status: offline 		This makes me sad. Will public education cease to teach Shakespeare, Charles Dickens, or other classical literature simply because we don't speak like that anymore ?

Sometimes doing a tough challenging thing, like learning how to produce a cursive font, expands the mind and challenges it. Learning how to write cursive is very tough. It also forces the child to connect their mind to their fingers and it is not about "art". Art does not have to be challenging and most kids think it is fun, learning is not ALWAYS fun. It is sometimes work, hard work, and there is nothing wrong with hard work. Cursive has nothing to do with creativity or imagination.

Status: offline 		I had to vote no on this one. For a few reasons. This does not mean they will not teach reading or writing just this form of "font". And if it is to be about the actual act of learning and it is to be hard then why don't we just teach them calligraphy. It is older and prettier. Oh and on a personal side note as a person that is dyslexic most have no idea how much cursive can make a small child hate the idea of learning anything.

Status: offline 		Fair enough, julia, but kids have enough other things to do in school that fit within the categories you listed that teaching them something obsolete is not really worthwhile.  It's like shorthand.  Once dictation machines were invented, shorthand became pretty much obsolete.

Status: offline 		I am ambidextrous. It was extremely hard for me to learn how to write cursive, and if anyone should want to discard it, it should be me. I think the troubles I had learning how to write make me appreciate it more perhaps? I know the struggle helped my overall dexterity and fine motor skills. Your experience may vary.

I find it hard to believe that learning anything is a "waste of time". For example, did they stop teaching kids how to tell time because of the predominance of digital time pieces? I remember hearing clock faces would be obsolete too, they aren't

Status: offline 		Julia, I do have to say I agree with you that having trouble can make you enjoy something more once you have mastered it. I know that as a child that had problems learning to read that when I first read Shakespeare on my own it gave me joy that lasts to this day. But as an artist myself I also agree with Sunny about art and creativity. So I again fall back on the calligraphy idea, but that may just be me.

Status: offline 		Maybe it was just the school that my daughter went to but she was never taught how to tell time on a regular clockface. To this day she has no clue and usually just guesses. If it wasn't for her Iphone I think she'd never be on time for anything lol.

And as for art just being fun for most kids, my daughter is an artist. She loves to draw and paint and graphic arts but she absolutely hated art class in school because they weren't allowed to just create. They had to learn certain techniques which weren't always easy and had to learn about different styles, artists, etc....She found it boring and anything other than creative.

And I learned cursive in school, still suck at it and I'm one of the least coordinated people in the history of mankind. Didn't teach me squat and my cursive still looks like the writing of a fifth grader. Blah. I hate to write.

Thank goodness for computers!

Status: offline 		I just jumped in here to say - they didn't when I was there. As much as they tried, I have long forgotten how to not only write it, but to even read it. I can barely make the numbers. If I go into any business, it will be paperless except for what comes out of the printer.

I have been talking with people and if they give me a phone number I don't reach for a pen and paper, I right click the desktop and go to "New Text Document". I typo it in there and don't name it, just like when I used to try to write them down. I never put a name next to a phone number, for certain reasons.                                   

So fuck it.

I don't know about the US, but in the UK your average adult's handwriting actively sucks, and that's because they were taught to write cursively. Printing letters means they retain distinct form, and printing is a thousand times clearer for the reader.

Cursive writing is a throwback to when lifting the pen off the page meant you got a nasty ink spatter. Modern pens have much better inkflow control. It's time to move on.

Status: offline 		i still think they should teach cursive, but maybe without so much emphasis. it's not really all that necessary, but even if i had kids in a school where they were no longer teaching it, i'd get some penmanship pads and teach them myself. =p i don't think cursive is the reason for bad handwriting, though -- many of the people i know with bad handwriting never grasped cursive or wrote really ugly looking cursive, too. =p i've become somewhat notorious for my pretty handwriting (when i'm not writing in "jot this down fast!" chicken scratch) and cursive was one of my favorite things in grade school. it was an affinity for line that translated into art later in life, blah blah blah.
ANYWAY, i think cursive has value, similar to art. it's hard to put your finger on the value of teaching art, and yet we still do it because it still has value to us in some way. people believe that art somehow has meaning and importance beyond what's easily grasped about something like math or computer science -- i think of handwriting as a form of art, so i put it in that category.

I still hate the fact that I never learned it

Originally it was part of my first qualification as court employee due to taking notes during court proceedings....but we were the first year who did not have to do it anymore (until before us they had to do exams in it at the end of the apprenticeship) and so weren't taught it...

now....ok....I mainly hated it as mum can shorthand and she always wrote stuff down via shorthand when she did not want us to read it (such as notes for xmas and birthday pressies)....and I was looking forward to learn it to be able to read it and didn't care that mum said I might still not be able to read it due to people with shorthand also at times developing own signs...

But hey, maybe thats an option to look into learning it next year or so, once I moved and settled in

my dad's writing was GORGEOUS..almost an artform.. even if I had to squint to read it.

I think combining cursive with art classes may be a solution.. much like was said earlier about calligraphy.

MY cursive SUCKS.. although, it has worsened over the years... it USED to be decent and legible,,,
