Boehner’s decision means an opportunity lost

House Speaker John Boehner’s surprise announcement late Saturday that he was abandoning efforts to reach a comprehensive budget agreement brings a sudden end to what may have been the best opportunity in years to deal with the country’s looming fiscal crisis.

Boehner pulled the plug on talks with the White House on a package that would have called for cuts in major entitlements programs as well as new tax revenues. It was a stunning decision, coming a day before President Obama and congressional leaders were due to resume their negotiations.['/snip]

[snip]A big deal would have reduced the deficit by $4 trillion or more over 10 years or so, with spending cuts in excess of $2 trillion and new revenues estimated at more than $1.3 trillion, although precise numbers were hard to come by, given the fluidity of the talks.[/snip]
Boehner’s decision means an opportunity lost

Gee the Repubs were going to get cuts in Social Security and changes in Medicare but the top Republican on the hill says no.

What gives? Do the Repubs want something major done with the deficit or not? They get what they want then they up and say "NO DEAL!"

More proof that Republicans and conservatives in general are full of shit and dont give a fuck about what they say they care about.

The republicans only care about trying to ensure that Obama is a one-term president. They think tanking the world economy will make that happen. It may but is that we want to pay? If a global depression is really the goal, should that actually be rewarded?

I dislike the vast majority of republicans and democrats (politicians), so I'm not going to jump on the partisan wagon, but 2 trillion in cuts over 10 years is pathetic, that is less than should be taken from the "Offense" budget alone. We are running a deficit of close to 1.5 trillion a year, and they are talking 200 billion in cuts a year, and what 1.3 trillion in "new" revenue over 10 years, or a 130 billion a year, for a grand total of 330 billion a year. We'd still be up shit creek, it would only stretch this out longer. Why not cut the military by 50% to start, there now you have 500 Billion a year off the deficit and we'd still have the largest "offense" budget on the planet, then fight over the rest. Any repub or demo plan that does not include large "defense" cuts is a joke, as that is a huge part of the problem.

I'd reject it, it a pathetic amount of cuts. I wouldn't even consider anything that didn't account for at least half the deficit. So, come back when they have a plan that reduces 750 billion a year in cuts, and that is just an okay start. It is not that hard, they already can cut 500 billion from the "offense" budget. Then and only when we have 750 billion in cuts, then we can talk about tax increases.

IMO....

I mean seriously close to 1.5 trillion a year deficit, and the "plan" accounts for 330 billion. What a joke. Fuck that. How can anyone take repubs or demos seriously.

That reminds me, I think I heard something about Cantor possibly making a lot of money is the government defaults, though I wasn't paying a whole lot of attention to Keith Olberman Friday night; i was too busy trying to figure out what had happened on Big Brother

It was 4 trillion over ten years.

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Barack Obama and congressional leaders were regrouping after House Republicans abandoned efforts for a massive deficit reduction package of $4 trillion over 10 years — a potential deal that had unnerved partisans from both political parties.

House Speaker John Boehner announced late Saturday that he was now looking for a deal about half that size, saying chances for a bigger agreement succumbed to White House insistence on substantial new tax revenue. White House officials said Obama would press for a bigger bargain one last time at a White House negotiating session Sunday evening.

I'm just going off the seperate numbers they gave. How they rounded to 4 trillion who knows, and 4 trillion over 10 years is a complete and total joke. we will be closing in on 15 trillion in debt by the end of this year, we have 1.5 trillion deficit this year alone. So, okay 4 trillion and that isn't all cuts that counts increased revenue to. LOL. And it still is completely and total insufficient. that is like 2 and some fraction of a years of the current budget deficit, or 400 billion a year on a deficit of 1.5 trillion. It doesn't come close to being meaningful.

Now, if you took that 400 billion and added another 500 billion from the offense agencies budgets, now you'd be getting somewhere.

But 400 Billion a year, on 1.5 trillion deficit is really pathetic. And I doubt it'll even end up really being that much, things have a way of not meeting expectations up in DC. so, you have to overshoot the target to hit it, IMO.

Or for a regular person that'd be like.
So I owe a 150,000 dollars for example. and I'm adding debt at 15,000 a year, and my plan for becoming financially sound is to instead of going into debt 15,000 a year, I'm going to go into debt at a rate of 11,000 a year, and call that a plan. but I'm still going to spend a huge portion of my income on security guards (military), spy agencies, etc. amounting to like half of my total income. LOL.

That's the M.C. Hammer plan of sound financial planning.

There is no way that Boehner can cut a deal which the Dems will agree to and which his own party will support.  His best option is to cut a last-minute deal on Aug 2 and then claim that while he didn't want the deal, it was his responsibility to not let the country go down the tubes.

I don't trust the "4 trillion over ten years" crap.  That means that the deal will be back-loaded with most of the cuts and tax hikes coming later and likely dependent on unsustainable assumptions.

Expect the whole damn process to be dominating headlines because nobody's going to be happy with the deal as signed, and all parties need to make it look like Herculean effort was expended to do something you or I could do in a few hours if there was no posturing involved.  If it was perceived as easy, we the people would be more prone to asking why mega-hours of work produced such crap.

Any serious plan will include social security, medicaid/medicare, defense spending, overall spending cuts, and tax increases. All else is agenda jostling.

Dems: The sun will rise again!
Reps: Typical liberal crap...they want skin cancer, drought, high air conditioning costs, deaths from heat exhaustion....

I'm glad. I don't know what I detest more... leftist utopians (read that MARXISTS) like O'dingdong or cave in Republicans like my own senator McCain. The problem ISN'T that we are not punishing the productive enough. THAT is a huge problem. The problem isn't that we aren't getting enough money coming in. THE PROBLEM IS SPENDING. o'dumbo has a real problem here and he knows it. He's already lied to his base countless times... hows that peace prize workin' for ya? The nations problem will be solved November 2012.. IF and only IF Republicans don't try to get love from Katie Couric and cave in. Of course, if they do, they are gone too. Runaway spending and growth of government... well and the growth of your o'phoney's crony capitalism... is the problem.

Either way, you do know there are many government programs that can help you.

Weird.

ABM, I actually agree with you regarding your contention  that the government has grown too large and expensive.  But I fail to see that this problem never existed prior to the election of Obama and would magically disappear if all Democrats changed their party affiliation.

I actually do not believe either party wants to be solely responsible for any budget/deficit bill put through. This is because there needs to be some hard times ahead to actually do what needs to be done, and no one wants to accept that it might end their political career to do it. This is the only reason I can see any of them walking away from discussions to correct the problems.

"The single most important thing we want to achieve is for President Obama to be a one-term president."
Sen. Mitch McConnell as quoted in The Atlantic Jan/Feb 2011

Obstructionism appears to be the only true and self-serving goal of the grand old party's leaders. To this end they will stop at nothing, even crippling the credit rating of the U.S. The bottom line is that the financial health of the country is secondary (or even further down the list) to their lust for political power and control.

based on past posts, I suppose "this marxist" to be euphemistic for Obama.

I presume that your imperative is directed to Obama. Or Congress. Or the Senate.
