My father raised me in the same fashion in which he was raised. While not fair, it was all that he knew. He never was interested in being a parent and made that clear to us on a daily basis. He was, however, a good, dependable breadwinner and we never went without materially. That is more than can be said for many. My mother was hospitalized about half the time, and was too heavily medicated the rest of the time to practice good parenting skills. She had a good heart, wanted to be a parent, and I believe would have made a good parent if not for her illness. This is a person who was really not cut out to be a parent despite her strong desire to be one. I was fortunate to have an older sister, a caring next-door neighbor, and a few concerned relatives who filled in the parenting gaps. They were all wonderful, fair, and went well above and beyond the call of duty.
