Very much so. I have often looked back in awe of how wonderful my parents were. They weren't the most educated, professional people in the world but they were good-hearted, hardworking folks. They loved us and always treated us kindly and fairly. I know how blessed I was to have them

Nope, but I'll guarantee that they did the best they could.

Not once in My life did I ever go without a need.  At the same time, My brother's death took a terrible toll on both of them.  It was awful on both and to this day, I have no problem saying that I couldn't survive what they had to endure.  I don't have the strength to lose a child.

Umm, imo, birth order has an effect. I was first born and training my parents was entirely on my shoulders. Sometimes they didnt understand me, like me being a kid and becoming a vegetarian when we were farmers and grew food & critters that we ate, and certain other things. Luckily they didnt restrict me and gave me permission to move to the big, bad city all on my own right after my 17th birthday. They werent always fair but then life isnt so you gotta learn that lesson at some point. They allowed me my independence and that to me made up for any perceived unfairness, etc.

My father raised me in the same fashion in which he was raised. While not fair, it was all that he knew. He never was interested in being a parent and made that clear to us on a daily basis. He was, however, a good, dependable breadwinner and we never went without materially. That is more than can be said for many.

My mother was hospitalized about half the time, and was too heavily medicated the rest of the time to practice good parenting skills. She had a good heart, wanted to be a parent, and I believe would have made a good parent if not for her illness. This is a person who was really not cut out to be a parent despite her strong desire to be one.

I was fortunate to have an older sister, a caring next-door neighbor, and a few concerned relatives who filled in the parenting gaps. They were all wonderful, fair, and went well above and beyond the call of duty.

yeah my folks were pretty good most of the time. they were fair, the fucking rules were the same rules for me and my sister. the rules were reasonable, they were age appropriate, and not overly onerous. they sort of lost their objectivity when i wouldn't marry billy, but that's when i fucked off anyway, so it doesn't matter.

More than fair. And my mother continues to amaze me with her generosity and love. (Dad probably would be, too, but he passed away.)

My parents did the best they could given what they had and the fact that they are two, very deeply flawed and weak, human beings.

my parents did the best they could with the person I was growing up....

Mom still does.

I will grant that the material (me) that they worked with was deeply flawed, so they had a hard time wiht it..

but I will always say that my folks didnt fuck up... *I* did...

I actually voted for 'unsure', because in the grand scheme of things, yes they were fair, they treated me far better than many parents treat their children. But in the context of my sisters and i, no, i was treated poorly compared to my middle sister ( no longer my sister, i have gladly disowned her ) but my eldest sister was treated even worse than i was. Always the outsider, the stupid one, the one with no brains who will never get anywhere - she never got a leg up, or even a 'well done' from my parents.
