I dont have a problem with people coming up with unique and original names. It is 2011. I loathe the group mentality where it is considered "good" to have a name like, Cathy, Susan, Tom, Dave. I am sick to death with these pablum names. I was sick to death of them in the 60's and I am still sick of them.

People taking the piss out of others is more about the people taking the piss than the person with the unique name. People suck and have kids and their kids act out on other kids cause adults are too big and bossy for kids to take the piss out of them. You see a bossy bullying kid look at the parents, that is where it mostly originates.

Why we are so in love with conformity and call it "reality"? It is some crazy archaic shit we propagate. If a child is named with love and consideration of who that little being is it is none of anyone's business. If folks need to point fingers and all that because someone has an unusual name they likely make boring dinner guests.

The Zappa kids were named unusal names but I have read a book Moonbeam wrote and she is an awesome soul. European people often have "unusual" names, first and last, so the freak what. When my parents came to North America they made my mom change her first name because white people didnt know how to pronounce it. Yeah right. I call bogus conformist bullshit.

It's cool if you don't have a problem with it, but how nice of you to spare a thought for the kids who will have to live with the name somebody who tried to be so "cool and nonconformist" saddled them with. I am sure you can scream bogus conformist nonsense all day long and feel good about it, how good would you feel if your kids come home with bloody noses or in tears because the other kids are taking the piss? But hey, who cares about the kids YOU got your nonconformist way, to hell with them if they can't take a bit of suffering and pain... Now if you want to be so nonconformist, how about you change your name and live with it? Btw there is quite a range of names that aren't "Cathy, Susan, Tom, Dave" but are possibly not quite as far out as Zuma or Princess Tia, or whatever brain fart somebody had....

Moon Unit!! Get it right.

As far as naming kids goes, well sure you want your kid to have a distinctive name, but also you don't want them to have a weird name. Sure Dweezil & Moon Unit are weird, but so what. If your dad is Frank Zappa, you could be named Dogshit and you'd still be cool. But for the rest of the kids on the planet...have a little mercy why don't you? There's a bazillion names available without getting stupid. I named my kids somewhat uncommon but perfectly normal names, so can anybody else.

To be fair to Frank, they both say the like their names.

I like Harper. It's very preppy sounding, and 80's retro :)

Yeah, but they possibly never had to go to a "regular" school and they never had to apply for your average job, which just *might* make a little difference, also they grew up at a time where stupid names were not all that strange. Plus if you got a legend as a dad, others might not be so eager to take the piss as if your last name is Smith and your parents live in a small town and make ends meet - and might lack the money to send you to a fancy school where all the other kids also have slightly odd names...

This is not going to stop bullying kids from sending kids home with bloody noses, that is my point.

What a testament to our society to think when naming a child you have to worry about what others think (or else you will need to plan to get beat up, made fun of ) as more important than what the parents think. Hey I like a lot of old skoo names. I like tradition, it is fine. I am talking about people naming their children some lame ass name because they are afraid of what others think. Mush name so the child mushes in.

I have an unusual strangely spelled last name, I have a first name I have heard poodles and ponies called. I have immigrant parents with big ol accents and we were very poor. I was a very sensitive kid and blah blah blah. The kids that made fun of me, pulled my hair out, fought me, are the problem, not me and my funny name.

I like the name Zuma, what is wrong with it? There are some women named Zuma and they like their name. I havent met anyone named Princess Tia and I bet you havent either.

I have seen you ranting (swear words surrounded by other words) on the forums but this is your first blast at me. You will make a wonderful mother no matter what you name your child. I cant understand your writing but thanks Banana. Is that what your mom named you? I cant follow your writing it is bouncing all over the place. I think you are unhappy with my post? Is that it did I get that right?

HannahLynHeather -> RE: Beckhams daughter (7/11/2011 11:44:44 PM)

fuck it, you're not worth the gold-plated cmail.

myotherself -> RE: Beckhams daughter (7/11/2011 11:46:23 PM)

Yeah Willow - I kinda like Harper too :)

And at least they spelled it correctly. While freaky names are a way to get a kid noticed (and not always in the right way), some parents think it's cool to give their kids a 'normal' name but play with the spelling.

In one of the classes I teach at the moment, I have 4 Jordans. Actually, I have a Jordan (male), Jordyn (female), Jorddan (male) and Giordan (male).

In other classes I have Caitlyn, Kate-lyn and Catelin (only 2 in the same class), Kimberley and a Kimblee...the list goes on.

Although they are eclipsed by the poor 5 year old girl whose mother called her Lola (nice name) who has just married a guy called Lovegrove...[:'(]

tj444 -> RE: Beckhams daughter (7/11/2011 11:54:24 PM)

My original name was not typical, it is a European name so too weird for where i grew up, the friggin teachers couldnt spell it, other people couldnt pronounce it. I changed it as an adult, legally of course. I never told my mother that i did that, didnt want to hurt her feelings or anything.

I dont mind Harper, i dont think that is too different, the Seven part I wouldnt do tho.

It might not stop kids from bullying but it encourages it quite a bit.

Great that you feel that the other kids were the problem, bet you still didn't like that the kids made fun of you ad pulled your hair out and fought you, so you want a child to go through that... How much better will the child feel if you tell it that the other kids are the problem? You know will it make it hurt less? Soften the punches? You liked it so much that a child should endure the same?

Actually I cocked the name up Princess Tiaamii is even more retarded...

I think I rather start some obscure cult, hey founding a religion never harmed anybody, ask Hubbard or LaVey...

In fact cults have harmed plenty of people, particularly the more litigatious of the two you name.
Or do you think John Travolta's son would still be dead if they hadn't been in denial of his medical condition and put him on some treatment for it? How about a Cof$ publicist effectively destroying Isaac Hayes career when the poor fucker had had a stroke and couldn't even eat solid food, let alone make career effecting decisions? How about the (hilarious but catastrophic) effects of taking Tom Cruise off his meds? How about Hubbard's seeming taste for pederasty with the underaged kids he kept on his yacht? How about the war chest and it's use to fund nuisance litigation and smear campaigns since the mid '60s? Hell, even before Hubbard got his cult up and running properly, he still managed to get Jack Parsons kicked out of the JPL as a security risk...

LadyConstanze -> RE: Beckhams daughter (7/12/2011 5:59:02 AM)

Uhhh, well, it never hurt the founders... Don't get me wrong, I find Scientology totally disgusting, but I can't get my head around the fact how seemingly reasonable adults subscribe to such nonsense...
