but then you have to offer a solution. you can't target actual fixable problems or people will expect fucking results.go with the psylocibin. keep the fuckers tripping and they'll be docile as fuck.

i did know a guy who tried to start a sex cult. it involved a lot of psylocibin.

God knows how that'd work. Whenever I've had the old mushies I've never felt remotely randy.

How about telling them their problems can't be solved because they are not spiritually evolved enough, too hung up on material goods, or sell them some stupid scheme where they have to recite something I declare as something that will help them to unblock their spirituality, if it doesn't work for some, well they could have blockages due to a previous life or so...

If you drug them you're supplying them with illegal substances, I mean drug pusher is also a career that might make you rich but much more risky than cult leader.

I'm really getting into this, though I possibly couldn't really pull it off with a straight face. It's just kinda interesting why some cults work, a bit like why some ads work and others don't.

HannahLynHeather -> RE: Starting a cult (7/12/2011 3:46:08 AM)

well i was thinking in terms of b.c. the mushrooms grow wild all over the fucking place, you just tell them to go grazing.

the too hung up on material goods is a good fucking line, or take a page from the fucking scientologists and they have to pay for each new revelation

PainObjectForUse -> RE: Starting a cult (7/12/2011 4:09:03 AM)

How about ... I am the reencarnation of ( insert name here ). Just a few tips - Elvis, kurt cobain, john lennon. Hey, these guys rock.

Throw them the end of the world  conspiracy/theories. Hey, throw them a roland emmerich movie, that would make anyone subject to anything - well any movie he directed after independence day.

And of course my personal favourite - "choosing not to believe in the devil, doesn't make him any less real.  Just think marilyn manson.

I think sending them into the woods to munch on some toadstools would still work today, the only problem is that you kill off your money bags, ooops, believers rather rapidly and sooner than later the damned hospitals will catch on and you got the tabloids going through your bins and showing pics of you spending lots of cash in expensive shops, the very thing you tell your believers not to do...

Scientology amazes me, seriously, that's so freaking funny, the Xenu rubbish and all but hey, it really seems to work... http://www.solitarytrees.net/pickets/elrond/21coset.htm

I don't know, the whole notion of people confronting and clearing memories that are the base of irrational attitudes seems plausible. I read part of the L. Ron Hubbard 600 pages Dianetics once. Hey, Tom cruise is not complaining, from what I hear, just the pople who would like to be in his shoes.

P.S. just to clear possible misunderstandings, I meeant the actual T.C. haters, It wasn't directed at LadyConstanze's post.

um yeah, but the space aliens shit sort of chucks all plausibility out the fucking window. so fuck scientology.

Isn't it all about setting up a loop ... or a treadmill?

guilt/insecurity -> offer a solution -> make sure it's forever hovering just beyond their reach -> the reason why they can't attain it is because of their failing -> which you'll forgive if they try harder -> (and give me all your $) -> which brings us back to guilt/insecurity.

A little bit of charisma and mysticism works a treat, absolute self belief is a must, as is a thorough understanding of semantics. Oh ... and a good smile too!

Now, where do I sign? [:D]

Moonhead -> RE: Starting a cult (7/12/2011 5:15:21 AM)

Myself, I miss the Church of the Subgenius. Now that was a proper cult, and they had the decency to shut it down when the world failed to end on x day...

For understanding the concept of my cult so well, I make you an acolyte, surely you understand that to show yourself worthy of the honour bestowed on you, my dear child, you have to show your commitment and devotion. I shall send you all my bank details so you can deposit the terrible money that ties you to the wrong spiritual plane into it, out of the goodness of my heart I am willing to take that burden off of you so that the mammon will not pollute your soul anymore.... Btw best get a 2nd job as well, because you might find some obstacles in your path to spiritual freedom and salvation, and while we officially shun money surely you understand that we can't offer salvation for free... You might also want to buy some of our holy candles (IKEA actually but since I bought them they are holy now) for the special friendship price of $1000 a piece, their light will help you to concentrate much better on ways to make my life easier and how to make me considerably richer.

You are indeed blessed my child, do not throw away this chance for happiness and salvation, it may never come again, show me that you are worthy!

The key to a successful cult or religion isn't preying on guilt and insecurities or manipulating people (though these help). The key is that it makes the follower feel special and/or part of something.

Yeah, I think preying on people's loneliness, dissatisfactions or pain work better. Depressed? Sick? Feeling alone in a new place? Jesus (or whoever) will make you feel better! They make you feel special and loved and part of a community, at least until you realize how messed up it all is. That's how I got hooked into evangelical Christianity as a teenager. [:'(]

I think the insecurities and guilt come later - the cult/fundamentalists cultivate that in their followers to get them to stick around and give them money.

PeonForHer -> RE: Starting a cult (7/12/2011 7:37:45 AM)

FR

I once got to know a woman just before she joined with a very 'keen' born-again Christian group. One night, some time after her 'epiphany', I went round to see her and her fellow group-members . . . . After a few hours of wild-eyed hammering at me, I finally realised the central attraction of it all: it removed a layer of doubt that most of us have, most of the time. Buy into this belief, and you buy yourself certainty about what comes afterwards. But not just that - you buy yourself ready-made solutions to all the deepest, most vexing problems about our existence in the now.

Wow. It's enticing. Especially so to those who are going through a period of radical insecurity.

Sorry to break it to you, but MM is one of the most charismatic figures ever and actually seriously smart, if I would have to pick a leader for a cult, he'd be my first choice (he seriously could pull that stuff off), if it comes to him or Scientology, he makes so much more sense than aliens who are hidden in our bodies and need to be freed through paying tons of money...

My friend is actually entertaining the idea to have a fake cult that will appeal to his ex and then get her to sign up to it, then reveal that it was all his idea and say "Now you got it official, you are an idiot!" Doubt he will pull it through, but it seems that hatching such plans helps him to cope with the break up, at least he's not focusing on her anymore and thinking he can be her savior and get her out of that selfdestructive cycle...

Really? Jesus. I think I'd be more likely to join a cult run by John Major.

I think one of the main strategies of cults, anyway, is deliberately to set out to trash 'sense'. One thing you absolutely must do is put yourself 'above' reason.

GreedyTop -> RE: Starting a cult (7/12/2011 8:16:24 AM)

Grr... Peon.. I wanna see the abs pic again./... dont you realize that the pic is seriously one of the big smiles for my day?

ANY kind of 'cult' bothers me.. whether it be Jim Jones, Charlies manson, Amway, or Mary kay..

too much RAH RAH without sensibility, IMO
