I think one of the main strategies of cults, anyway, is deliberately to set out to trash 'sense'. One thing you absolutely must do is put yourself 'above' reason.

I think you got it wrong, you have to pretend that there is a reason and a logic there, you can't just be that total nutcase... However stupid it is, but there has to be a semblance of reason...

Please, Peon, no more crawling bug! I tried to squish it three times!

Now, if I were going to start a cult, I would start with some accepted religious dogma and just skew it slightly.

"My brothers and sisters! Did God not say that He would test your strength! His agents and the agents of the Nemesis whisper to us even now, trying to lead us down the twin paths of salvation and damnation! The Devil promises you an easy road, a safe road, a road without struggle! God promises eternal salvation to those that prove their faith! Accept the whispering of the angels, brothers and sisters! Welcome struggle into your life, and prove your faith!"

Nothing says struggle like a ramen and peanut butter diet because you're giving every spare penny to your church.

Excuse me, I need to go check into how to start a church. :)

I think people want something a bit more New Age, you know crystals, light, angels and auras... Dunno what's the latest fad, Eastern Mythology or Native American, for a while the Druids were quite en vogue...

I've come to distinguish between 'ultra-alternative' and 'ultra-conservative' kinds of cults, mainly because adherents of the one kind look and act so differently to the other in certain respects. Most of the new-agey cults go under the first rubric; most of the born-again kinds go under the second. The gist of it is that with the new-agey cults, reason (and the doubt and insecurity that it gives rise to) gets swept away in favour of something 'more advanced', while in the born-again cults, that reasoning sense is wiped in favour of something that predates reason and is, ipso facto, considered of more authority.

A petition of one hundred or more signaturesd to my CM inbox will sway me. Probably.

If I'm reading the latest trendiness rags correctly, the newest fad is Islam. Kabala seems to have lost it's esoteric appeal. You hardly ever see the string bracelets, anymore. I'm seeing more mandalas for sale, though. That does suggest Eastern roots. Do you think they're going with the whole universe churned from milk stories or just grazing for the bits and pieces that make them look hip?

LadyConstanze -> RE: Starting a cult (7/12/2011 9:27:26 AM)

I doubt that they want to be troubled with the nitty gritty details, they want a quick fix or a speedy spell...

Arpig -> RE: Starting a cult (7/12/2011 10:41:43 AM)

~FR~
You need a leader that people will trust instinctively, some one who exudes an aura of calm and reason, somebody like...Shri Pigendra.

Isn't it all about setting up a loop ... or a treadmill?

guilt/insecurity -> offer a solution -> make sure it's forever hovering just beyond their reach -> the reason why they can't attain it is because of their failing -> which you'll forgive if they try harder -> (and give me all your $) -> which brings us back to guilt/insecurity.

A little bit of charisma and mysticism works a treat, absolute self belief is a must, as is a thorough understanding of semantics. Oh ... and a good smile too!

Now, where do I sign? [:D]

For understanding the concept of my cult so well, I make you an acolyte, surely you understand that to show yourself worthy of the honour bestowed on you, my dear child, you have to show your commitment and devotion. I shall send you all my bank details so you can deposit the terrible money that ties you to the wrong spiritual plane into it, out of the goodness of my heart I am willing to take that burden off of you so that the mammon will not pollute your soul anymore.... Btw best get a 2nd job as well, because you might find some obstacles in your path to spiritual freedom and salvation, and while we officially shun money surely you understand that we can't offer salvation for free... You might also want to buy some of our holy candles (IKEA actually but since I bought them they are holy now) for the special friendship price of $1000 a piece, their light will help you to concentrate much better on ways to make my life easier and how to make me considerably richer.

You are indeed blessed my child, do not throw away this chance for happiness and salvation, it may never come again, show me that you are worthy!

The cheque is in the mail, Ma'am ! [:D]

Oh! Did I mention that a foreign accent ...something exotic say French or Italian not gutteral like German or the Nordic languages - works wonders too! Great excuse if you slip up too - put it down to a mis-translation! You can always fake one if you're not actually French or Italian ....it's the look and the effect that counts, who cares about authenticity? And Benny Hinn's TV Show is a master class - check out his body language - superb!

LadyConstanze -> RE: Starting a cult (7/13/2011 4:29:22 AM)

LOL, I'm half Italian but I don't think I can pull the crazed witchy look off, I think a male cult leader as a figure head might work a bit better... I'll handle merchandising rights [;)]

PeonForHer -> RE: Starting a cult (7/13/2011 4:45:33 AM)

You could manage a passable Bela Lugosi accent, couldn't you, Lady C?

Moonhead -> RE: Starting a cult (7/13/2011 5:25:42 AM)

That's a good one: a vampire cult would be big with the goths and emos...

Yes, but I draw the line at biting them...

You bite their wallets, dear: financial vampirism...

That's a bit hard to make it sound appealing, plus I am not pale enough to camouflage as a vampire goddess

KMsAngel -> RE: Starting a cult (7/13/2011 7:06:47 AM)

They've had their day ..... women cult leaders are needed if only to keep the kids safe!

All joking aside, raping children seems to happen far too often in cult situations.

I think for those guys I would have a cult punishment that would make sure that they can't ever do it again, they'd be ritually bobbitted
