I am probably preaching to the choir, but OMG...I just discovered Ebay.  (Yeah, I know, a little behind in the times)  I always knew it was there, but I never realized how fun it was to sell stuff!   People pay money for things I don't want!  What a great concept, lol    I'm so excited, had to share :)

The dogs are looking nervous as I run out of things to sell....

lol. It's a laugh for a while. Then you realise how much of your money eBay takes, together with PayPal (who they also own), and eventually you start selling stuff elsewhere.

Or you run into buyers from another country who complain about the postage costs and want you to send uninsured and argue that about 10 years ago they've been to the UK and it quite cheap to send with the Royal Mail... ARGGGGGGGGGGG

hepburn27 -> RE: Who knew! (7/12/2011 1:57:06 PM)

Wait until you discover ebanned then... for things that you really don't want.

I personally prefer selling and buying things via gumtree... much less hassle than ebay.

DesFIP -> RE: Who knew! (7/12/2011 3:29:25 PM)

I love ebay. My daughter drives a car made by a firm that went bankrupt 7 years ago. The only place to find parts is ebay. But I hate the auctions, and since these parts are so hard to come by, I use the buy it now option.

hardcybermaster -> RE: Who knew! (7/12/2011 4:37:08 PM)

my partner buys loads of her clothes from ebay. A couple of times a year she goes into town, tries on different stuff from all the stores she likes. She then knows what sizes and shapes fit her and suit her and buys them from ebay. She gets stuff from oasis, white stuff, monsoon etc for usually less than £5 including postage...it's a good plan of action, try it

In a recent survey by one of the London trading standards agencies, almost 75% of "labelled" fashions on eBay were found to be fake, and frankly I'm surprised it's that few :) Not that I’ve any objection to fakes, coz frankly anyone who would pay the ludicrous sums of money they ask needs therapy, but let’s not pretend that there are loads of cheap eBay deals on designer gear out there, coz there aren’t. The genuine stuff goes for genuine prices, often more, bizarrely.

Mind you those brands aren't exactly top drawer, so your girl may have lucked out. Possibly.

Problem is there are no where near as many buyers as there used to be... I sold on ebay quite often and gave up after I barely broke even on the costs of listing things that didn't sell compared to what I actually ended up making on what did manage to sell.

I switched to Amazon for a while, who I loved... until they raised their percentage.  Now I just do the flea market.

hardcybermaster -> RE: Who knew! (7/12/2011 5:15:22 PM)

well if it looks like white stuff, wears like white stuff and washes like white stuff then it's white stuff isn't it? She only buys from people who have 99.9% positive feedback and as you say the "real" stuff is stupid money. She's happy and I'm happy, job done

Oh absolutely, no question, and I'm not criticising. If I wanted cheap knock-off clothing then I'd go to eBay too.

Just don't mention brands unless you're confident they are those brands, if you follow me.

Coz they almost certainly aren’t.

PS: The "99.99% feedback" thing is no indication; eBay recently suspended a "power seller" with superb feedback, who turned out to be selling the same cheapo knock-offs as everyone else. There are several UseNet groups that monitor eBay, and several sites too, and it's interesting reading. But if you're both happy then yes, job done.

hardcybermaster -> RE: Who knew! (7/12/2011 5:24:12 PM)

She's happy with what she buys and no one can tell if it's a fake or not but I take on board what you're saying.....if something seems too good to be true etc
I'll have a look at those usenet groups.

A spot on post. Buyers are deserting eBay in droves, coz they're sick of both eBay and PayPal walking away from disputes, rip-offs and fakes, and the levels being charged these days for sellers make things very tough; once you factor in the shipping and suchlike, it's not really worth it unless you're doing huge numbers, and even then the auction model doesn't work as well as the classified or fixed price ones.

Most of the eBay sellers I really like just use it as an extended classified section now, with prices near or identical to what you'd find in their official online shops.

Ebay will be dead in the water within 5 years. Or they'll have to slash their margins to the bare minimum, coz as it stands they're gouging everyone, buyer and seller.

LanceHughes -> RE: Who knew! (7/12/2011 5:28:51 PM)

Lance was an early adopter of ebay - buying and selling for over 10 years.  My early sales had 6 digits in the transaction number.  That is, eBay as a whole had not yet had 1 million transactions.

It was a LOT more fun in those days.  Much more social.  Now, you can only contact other users if you're involved in a sale with each other.  The pricing structure has become (as pointed out above) less aminable to the small seller.  And, worst (from my POV) is the fact that sales can only be paid thru PayPal.  If I want to take a check, why not?

eBay is working themselves out of business..... oh, it will take many years, but sellers go where customers are and guess what? customers go where sellers are.

eBay makes money per transaction, so ebay likes the "thousands of ipod" types of sellers and frankly, the policy changes over the years favor those types of sellers.

My speciality on eBay is (maybe was - LOL!) collectible glass (plates, cups, goblets, etc.)  eBay gave me an international market place while my booth in a Denver antique Mall has the advantage of allowing the buyer to actually feel and see it.

Not a problem, HTH.

And again, if you and she are happy with what you're buying as a thing in and of itself then fine. But if even one dollar/pound is being added because it's claiming to be something it isn't, then you're paying for something you're not getting.

I had this recently when buying a large micro-SD card for my mobile - there were any number of eBay sellers claiming to "Prove" they were genuine cards, but if you know what to look for, and I most certainly do, all of them, and I mean every single one, was fake, either selling a lower capacity card as a 32 gig, or selling knock-off 32 gig tat as "genuine Sandisk/Decent Brand", and paradoxically, the more "warnings" and "how to spot a fake!" messages they had, the more crappy the knock-offs tended to be.

In the end I had an epiphany, and realised that the guaranteed Amazon cards were only £5 "more", except in that case a) I could clearly see and later test they were genuine, and b) the small "extra" sum involved to get something good was worth it.

<irony mode>

Coz if they let you take a cheque, they're only gouging you once, instead of twice or, if you then dare to get your money out, three times :)

DomImus -> RE: Who knew! (7/12/2011 5:39:36 PM)

I hate eBay with a passion. The average Joe knows nothing about proper packaging. Not to mention all of the shill bidders and people who pad their "shipping and handling" to increase their profit. I gave up on eBay years ago and turned to Craigslist which still takes an inordinate amount of patience but is leaps and bounds ahead of eBay.
