I hate eBay with a passion. The average Joe knows nothing about proper packaging. Not to mention all of the shill bidders and people who pad their "shipping and handling" to increase their profit. I gave up on eBay years ago

That much is clear ... shilling and ship-padding mostly died out 2 or more years ago. Not to say it doesn't still go on, but for most even halfway in-demand products it's not in widespread use anymore.

These days you don't have to worry about sellers as much as you do eBay itself, if that makes any sense.

I've given up on it as of about March this year. Useless for ad-hoc, occasional sellers like me, and now even worse for occasional buyers like me too.

PS: Complaining about poor packaging and hiked shipping & packaging costs in the same post is the kind of delicious irony I love most. Well batted :) Generally speaking, if you want something packaged and shipped correctly, it costs a lot more than you might think. What does annoy is when it costs a bomb to ship, and is poorly packaged when/if it arrives.

ebay has an awesome affiliate program as well

not only do you get a % of the sale if the person joinsebay you get something from that 2

My favorite thing about ebay is that you can buy Tiffany boxes to put fake jewelry in.

A couple of years ago you could get quite good stuff, you still paid quite a bit for the real brands and you can tell the difference between a pair of designer heels and a fake, in sky high Manolos you can actually run a few miles and they feel comfy and they wear well. Now if you are looking at stuff, you can often tell from the picture that they are fake, if it's a style the designer never made or even the logo is a bit wrong... The top end stuff I really wouldn't get from eBay. Professional sellers who list top end goods with a low bidding price, sorry, just not possible, even end of lines of high quality stuff will cost the professional seller quite a lot, the designer brands will rather destroy their goods to keep the prices up than seeing the value go down.

I tend to look for a bunch of stuff that I like, know it fits and I just don't want to walk around a bunch of shops to find it, but that's it basically, a bra where the line had discontinued but I really loved wearing it because it fits and is comfy, yup, will buy it on eBay brand new, pair of jeans I have and it's on the last few threads, sure if I see that, great, the whole highstreet range is unlikely to get faked because there isn't enough profit in it, so the River Island or ASOS shirt from last season they don't make anymore but it had a great fit - definitely. But the "snatch up the designer bargain for dirt cheap" just doesn't work.

What eBay is great for is getting stuff that's not easily available locally, certain Italian foods and such, perfect (don't always want to bug the family to send me my fave brand of pesto or the smoked cheeses), on the other hand, I got a friend in Austria who loves Laura Ashley (not the flowery stuff, the silks and velvets in muted colours) oddly enough they are inanely expensive there (more than twice the price they are in the UK), so buying that stuff relatively cheap on eBay UK and sending it to her works out fine - she lives not too far from the Wolford factory and buys at the outlet there, so we're all happy...

eBay simply isn't interested in private sellers anymore, they make more money and have less hassle with professional sellers, the beauty of eBay was that it was some sort of flea market, but with the pricing structure and all, just not possible. If you sell something for the minimum price (which can happen) you're actually end up paying more as they force you to take PayPal, so you're paying eBay and PP, then you got all the hassle, people who want the postage for free and complain if you charge for good packaging material (which usually also doesn't come for free) - seriously, if it costs me to clean out my wardrobe and it's just a lot of hassle - I rather give it to the charity shop and be over and done with it.

~Fast Reply~

So where does one go to sell their miscellaneous items then? Seems most of you posting here are in the UK, so I don't know if there is a difference. I have a bunch (like several dozen) collectible ornaments and other "stuff" that I really want to unload. I wasn't looking forward to doing it on E-bay anyway, and still don't look forward to all the picture taking to get a good price for them, but can't keep carting them around from place to place, especially since I don't want them, lol.

So anyone have any suggestions for the best way to unload some unwanted stuff if not on E-bay?

There is ebuy (I think) which is quite good, gumtree seems to be locally, not sure about Craigslist (never all that big in Europe) then Facebook seems to have included something like that too...

eBay seems to have the most buyers but not quite as many as there were due to their crap policy

DavidLee44UK -> RE: Who knew! (7/14/2011 2:55:52 AM)

google products is the best

ebay was designed by a husband whose wife wanted to sell her miniature porcelain houses i believe
