Not really. I completely understood what you said. I, for completely different reasons, have also hurt myself to be sure that I am real. I don't consider it to be in the slightest bit masochistic, rather just a desperate need to know that some part of me was actually real, that there was some point where the delusions ended and I began.

I hurt myself today,
to see if I still feel
I focus on the pain
the only thing that's real.

My own emotional labyrinth is much more convoluted. I say: I want pain b/c HE needs it. My own need for pain is secondary, I am the sub, after all. I can think, I need pain b/c it pleases HIM.
Irish is saying, I need pain, b/c  it please ME.

Same here, ChatteParfaitt. I like SOME pain but I endure because He desires it. IrishMist has always intrigued me because as far back as I remember reading her posts, she has talked about pain in a way that hardly anyone else I've ever read has. I would love it if she wrote a book about her life with her husband because I am fascinated (hint, hint)

As she said, I think you hit the nail right on the head about her need for pain and that it pleases HER. Interesting summation of the difference between her and most of the rest of us 'round here. I'll be interested to read what others have to say........luci

I am half in, half out here. Like you, my masochism is about pain for pains sake. It is a reminder that I am here, and to get the feck out of myself and settle down.
But I also have the sensual masochism patterns that most here can relate to, as well as the I don't frekkin want it and I am only enduring it because my partner wishes me to endure it.
I wish I could settle into one or the other or the other, but pain for me is a crap-shoot. I never know what is going to be in play until I get there. It would be nice if I could direct it to go the way I wish, rather than just seeing what happens.
I am in a similar box as you, but I think who ever wrapped me decided to enclose box inside box inside box.

who don't actually get that kind of pleasure from pain. I enjoy pain simply because it's a reminder to me that I live and can still feel (I am not going to go into that more deeply...already been there on the boards and not going to revisit )
YET, I get no actual pleasure out of the pain that is inflicted, nor do I receive any sexual gratification from it. It's simply a reminder for me.

So...what about those of us who fit outside the box of assumed definitions for masochists?

I love throwing a wrench in everyone's spokes

the problem with using pain to know you're real and feeling is  how do you know that what you are feeling is real? It could just be part of the illusion.

Ok so my buddhism is coming out <S>.

Now THAT is the real question that should be asked, and you are correct, how does a person know what is illusion, and what is not.

I can not answer that. All I can say is that for me and me alone, pain curbs a violence in me. It stops that violence from becoming uncontrollable. I use pain as a control method. Yet, sometimes, I want the pain just for the sake of it being pain, to remind me that life is for living.
