I found this paragraph especially interesting:

The businesses involved in this effort didn’t present a blueprint for a possible debt-reduction plan, and were silent on revenues or cuts-to-savings ratio. The reason is simple: they don’t much care. The corporate leaders just want Congress to raise the debt ceiling; how members get to “yes” is irrelevant.

This seems to imply there are actually some -gasp- business leaders who wouldn't mind higher taxes.

It's not that they want higher taxes.  It's just that they'll get hurt badly if the US defaults.

It's a multihanded game of chicken.

And to answer your question - it's mostly Grover Norquist telling the GOP what to do.  That one man has so terrified all the little weenies that they'd rather hurt the country than get on his bad side.

I never said they wanted higher taxes, just that it seems they don't see where taxes are so evil and could live with it if they were raised. And yeah, I know old Grover is the most powerful man within the ranks of the GOP.

If they're going to the GOP for them, they're in the right place.

erie, thanks for posting the link.

These two paragraphs sum it up rather well.

"So, let’s see. Wall Street wants Republicans to stop screwing around. The business community wants Republicans to stop screwing around. Global investors want Republicans to stop screwing around. The Federal Reserve and the Treasury Department want Republicans to stop screwing around.

But unhinged and uninformed right-wing activists want Republicans to keep pushing their — and our — luck. As of this morning, the congressional GOP is only listening to the activists."

And that, folks, is the problem with the "just throw the bums out" philosophy of voting.

These results.

The last sentence is what lead to my question in the thread title.

It's a multihanded game of chicken.

Precisely.

Steven, I'd suggest that the Koch brothers have also been playing a major behind-the-scenes role in influencing the GOP (and the Tea Party) recently.
