So. . . one of my dogs had another seizure today. That makes the count two. The other one was about 3.5 years ago. So we are really in the 'see if it happens again' stage still.

I am just wondering if it is time yet to change his name from Rene Descartes (Renny for short) to Spaz the Dog?

Depends. Is he taking the developments philosophically?

If so, leave the name as it is.

I agree with Aileen... On a side note, my parents once had a dog that my dad did not kill which used to have seizures. My dad would feed it a piece of chocolate every day (the dark kind I think) and it would ward off the seizures.

We had a poodle that lived to be 18ish. She had seizures for the last 4 or 5 years of her life. We called her Shakey.

Awwwww ... I have such a soft spot for black labs. First gun dog I ever shot with was a black lab. Lovely old things. Intellectually bankrupt, but still hugely amusing. And oddly courageous, in a quiet way.

Sort of like Boris Johnson.

I hope his condition turns out to be manageable - as many are with meds.

But don't change his name, please. It seems somehow wrong.

I used to have a cat named Spaz, but not because he had seizures. It was because he was nuts, "spazzed out" a lot over stupid stuff.

If it stays as a seizure every 3 years or so, then there is really nothing to manage. Comfort him while it happens and make sure that he bounces back okay.

We actually have two black labs. The other one's name is Friedrich Wilhelm Nietzsche (Fred for short.)

Renny was the runt and is still a bit smaller. He is quite the scamp even at nearly 8 years old. Fred is calmer but quite the noodge. They are both pretty good dogs. They are either brothers or half brothers. They have the same dad, but two moms gave birth the same Thanksgiving and the litters got mixed. So without DNA testing they have no pedigree papers. Meh, it is not as though I wanted them for show dogs anyways.

His full name was Spazamataz.

Daisy had seizures in spells. She might have a few in a week, then go months or even a year without any more. It never did seem to bother her, once they were over, she was back to her self.

Hope your furbaby is ok.

He seems to be his usual self now. If he wasn't I would not be sitting here making fun of him. They are getting their evening walkies later right now because of the heat index. But we will keep a closer eye on him the next few days.

I had a cat who had seizures at the full moon. And they didn't seem to affect her that much. The vet said there was no point in medicating her since they were so infrequent. The only time they ever really bothered me was when she'd have them on my bed in the middle of the night (she would be incontinent). Her name was Bootsie & we never thought to change it once her seizures started. I like Aileen's choice best!!

He was a pretty grey cat. He disappeared one day and we could never find him. It was a sad day. That was about 37 years ago. I still think about that little guy.

Willow, my dachshound, had seizures sometimes multiples a week. He was epileptic and I found out he did react on frontline, that would trigger it.
And for all I know chocolate (the darker the worse) is like poison to dogs. Just sayin'.

... never felt the need to change his name, coz he already had 3 of 4 nicknames to go by, and listened to them also.

For a while Frontline had cute pics of cats and dogs on the dog stuff, a friend treated her cats and her dog, ran out of cat stuff and used a bit of the dog stuff (had a picture of a cat on, right...) and the cat got seizures and started foaming from the mouth, washed it and brought kitty to the vet who then explained that whole flea stuff for dogs is actually toxic for cats...

I started giving the dogs garlic pills, seems to work really well against fleas and stuff (apparently fleas don't like a blood with garlic flavour) and deworm them regularly, frontline only in the dangerous months, my vet here and a friend in the US (also a vet) both said they aren't completely convinced that it's all that harmless but beats a fleabag...

Labs eat everything. But twice in three years makes me wonder if he ate something he shouldn't have and the seizure was a result of ingesting something poisonous.

Ironically, the same thing happened with my Spaz, somewhere in the marshes outside Tuckerton, NJ. I sat under a dock with a can of tuna for hours every night for 2 weeks trying to coax him back from wherever, but we never saw him again. I always hoped he found a good new home.....[&o]
