Ah yes, the old "I am sooo willing to give up my self respect in return for cuddles" method. I know it well. I grew up with a dog who was like that. Sweet no matter what we kiddies did to her.

As for the breed thing, I think it has more to do with how they are raised, at least to a point. It's always a good idea to take note if a breed is known to not be good with children. Better to err on the side of caution than to learn the hard way.

One of the reasons why I picked Dobies (apart from loving their mentality) is that they are good with children and very clever dogs, not quite as clever as Border Collies, which make the worst pets as they are high energy dogs that actually need to work and be mentally challenged on a regular basis to be happy, bit like Huskies. They are however extremely harmony loving dogs, if I want to have an argument with my other half, we do have to leave the house and find a quiet spot, otherwise the dogs will howl and be distraught, in case the 2 cats fight, the dogs come and have an absolute paddy and tell the cats off.

The very interesting thing is both are pedigrees (just turned out this way, they're both rescues) but with completely different lines, girlie has a lot of Russian, German and Swiss in her, where a couple of decades ago they started to introduce more Great Dane and Rottie into the breed to avoid some of the problems that came with overbreeding them (brain that didn't stop growing and then pressed against the skull and literally drove them mad, hip problems, etc.) the boy's line is almost pure English and Irish, where they used Greyhounds for the same reason. They're both really tall, she's of a slightly sturdier built while he's very long and lean and apart from the head and colour has a lot of the Greyhound shape.

Girl is black and tan, boy is rust, and nope, they are not usually allowed on the sofa (which they know) so they didn't mind posing for the privilege.

Beautiful, beautiful dogs LadyC. Interesting how different Dobies look when their ears aren't docked - a practice I abhor!

Damn now I want to just hug 'em and cuddle them!

I have to admit the pointy ears look makes them look a bit like Batman, but that has been outlawed in most European countries for years, unfortunately it still gets done a lot and there is nothing that stops them. I saw an ad the other day where they offered "legally docked and cropped" Dobie puppies, called the RSPCA to report it, they explained to me that as long as it is done by a vet, nothing that can be done about it, so in case the bring them out of the country to get it done (though that does make me wonder how they do it with puppies and the rabies vaccination - the UK is super strict on that and there is a 6 month wait after the vaccination) and it gets done in a country where it is legal, they don't have a legal angle. If they find a vet that is crooked enough in the country to do that, it's also legal, the vet will just claim that there was a medical reason for it... Makes me sick, the RSPCA person said it irks them a lot and they are putting pressure on the dog shows to not allow the showing of dogs who have been mutilated this way.

It frustrates me too that people who want it done will find a way. It must be even more frustrating for those working at the RSPCA and other such places who are in the system. Can't imagine wanting to do something about it and not being able to do it as there is no proof.

Or worse, a legal loophole they can use...

Do you throw in in the garbage or dump it in the yard?    If you dump it in the yard- is there a trick to it?

Yes, the problem of the shitty litter, the wood based pellet stuff I flush down the bog, but the clay and limestone stuff is a problem. Presently I am tossing it in the trash, but one has to be careful with taking the bag outside with all that weight in, and it has happened, the bag burst and dumped trash and kitty litter all over my floor - not nice !!! ( At the time the cat saw this and legged it out the window pdq, no doubt fearing my anger).

In the past, I did just chuck it over the fence at the bottom of my yard into a disused quarry, the plus point of that I guess, was no other cat would come near, so my cat had the rule of the roost where I live, as her 'scent' was well set in the enviroment. I quit, because some grumpy neighbours saw me tossing it over the fence.
