Take that with a rail car full of salt

Its from the same network that forged documents in an effort to get Kerry elected over Bush

Heres something a little more balanced:

quote:

Poll: Americans divided over looming debt crisis

WASHINGTON — It might be time for another midnight ride by Paul Revere, this time warning "the creditors are coming."

Americans seem not to have awakened to the fast-looming debt crisis that could summon a new recession, imperil their stock market investments and shatter faith in the world's most powerful economy. Those are among the implications, both sudden and long-lasting, expected to unfold if the U.S. defaults on debt payments for the first time in history.

Facing an August deadline for raising the country's borrowing limit or setting loose the consequences, politicians and economists are plenty alarmed. The people? Apparently not so much.

They're divided on whether the raised the limit, according to

an Associated Press-GfK poll that found 41 percent opposed to the idea and 38 percent in favor.

People aren't exactly blase. A narrow majority in the poll expects an economic crisis to ensue if the U.S., maxed out on its borrowing capacity, starts missing interest payments to creditors. But even among that group, 37 percent say no dice to raising the limit. In Washington's humid air, talk of a financial apocalypse is thick.

There are warnings of "credit markets in a state of panic," as the House Budget Committee chairman, Rep. Paul Ryan, R-Wis., put it, causing a sudden drop-off in the country's ability to borrow and pushing the government off a "credit cliff."

He was characterizing a report by the government's nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office that warns of a "sudden fiscal crisis" in which investors might abandon U.S. bonds and force the government to pay steep interest rates and impose spending cuts and tax increases far more Draconian than if default were avoided.

The dire warnings appear to be falling on unconvinced ears, at least so far.

Call it doomsday fatigue.

Bob Schieffer (of CBS)  is supposed to be a real journalist.

I suppose that he is, in the tradition of past CBS "journalists" [;)]

considering that the denver post "poll" is three weeks old (25th june) I would not put much trust in that either..

how very astute but I dont remember that far back...
things can change rapidly in 3 weeks, and welcome to the grown up world, Im not sure you are capable, but try....

MrRodgers -> RE: Poll: 71% shun GOP handling of debt crisis (7/18/2011 7:27:23 AM)

Not surprisingly, this compares two different questions. The CBS poll asked who was handling the debt crisis better and the Denver Post asks whether or not the debt limit should be raised. One is a matter of opinion abased on judgement, the other...a question about a specific act about the consequences of which many do not understand.

The CBS poll suggests dire consequences if the limit isn't raised while the Denver post results suggests an ignorance of the consequences of the failure to increase the limit.

The warning in the latter, i.e., not acting reflects just what the repubs propose to do if agreement with Obama is not reached and that 'sudden fiscal crisis' from CBO is the threat Ryan himself proposes.

Those dire warnings didn't fall on 71% of deaf ears in the first poll. They know the repubs play with not fire and threaten most of the country's financial future which will be much worse without a debt limit increase.

Call it doomsday fatigue.

That doosmday fatigue is exactly the demagoguery the repubs seek so the public will be scared into taking the hit while Ryan's tax cuts mostly for the rich will become law. Ryan's plan has $4 trillion + plus cuts in non-defense, non-security spending, with $4 trillion + in tax cuts for his and repub sponsors and forecasts a balanced budget in 2050. Have fun kinkroids, I won't be here.

He asked that because it is a waste of fucking time and is mere posturing by the repubs.

Isn't it sinking in cyberville that most of our debt problem and other polls show the public knows...the repubs and Bush are the most responsible ?

Where was the BBA in 2002 ? Couldn't have that because they wanted their fucking money and the country be damned, just like their debt ceiling shit is...fuck the country, this is about getting Obama out and us back in.

He asked that because he is a partisan hack

mnottertail -> RE: Poll: 71% shun GOP handling of debt crisis (7/18/2011 7:58:31 AM)

No, you only answered in that fashion because you are.

For any constitutional amendment to make the grade, two-thirds of the House and the Senate must vote in favor; and then at least 38 states need to ratify it. No wonder only 27 amendments have been added to the Constitution since it was ratified in 1788.

Additionally, the requirement would be kicked down the road 5 YEARS.

Now, where would the debt be at that time?  The draconian cuts, rather than a fell swoop would be repeated year after year to play even more catch up, it kicks the can down the road and only 'appears' to be good stewardship, and cost cutting, if you only are shallow in your nummeracy and your intelligence. The proposal will send us into the largest and longest and most abject depression in history.

If this is fiscal conservatism, then these innumerate bastards need to suck toilet, to get a tune up and straightened out.

When ever I listen to the latest Republican 'Doom and Gloom' speech, tryong to scare us Americans into submitting to their ideological retardation, I cant help thinking about something from the Ghostbusters...

Biblical proporations!

They have tried this same silly tactic (in different forms) for YEARS. Yeah, at first the got away with it. Now most of us are just wise to it, and the tactic only seems to work with the stupid and unwise. Naming the folks that keep voting for them....

popeye1250 -> RE: Poll: 71% shun GOP handling of debt crisis (7/18/2011 1:47:54 PM)

And Oblunder says 80% of Americans want higher taxes!
I don't know anyone (not one person) who wants higher taxes!

Yeah, it was definitely the GOP that had the sky falling before TARP, the stimulus, and Obamacare were rammed down the throats of the US. And now they are doing it again with the deficit/debt ceiling.

Question: did you ever learn to read?

They get that with an ambiguous question about "shared sacrifice" that implies that Bill Gates, Warren Buffett and GE would be the only ones paying higher taxes.

This is just too funny for words.

For years the GOP drove up the national debt and repeatedly raised the debt ceiling, but now when it is politically expedient it has turned into an overwhelming crisis.

Dick Cheney on Budget & Economy

Former Treasury Secretary Paul O'Neill was told "deficits don't matter" when he warned of a looming fiscal crisis.

O'Neill, fired in a shakeup of Bush's economic team in December 2002, raised objections to a new round of tax cuts and said the president balked at his more aggressive plan to combat corporate crime after a string of accounting scandals because of opposition from "the corporate crowd," a key constituency.

O'Neill said he tried to warn Vice President Dick Cheney that growing budget deficits-expected to top $500 billion this fiscal year alone-posed a threat to the economy. Cheney cut him off. "You know, Paul, Reagan proved deficits don't matter," he said, according to excerpts. Cheney continued: "We won the midterms (congressional elections). This is our due." A month later, Cheney told the Treasury secretary he was fired.
