Not much partisan fodder here, but an interesting read on urban planning, and the impact of culture on earthquake preparedness.

You misread the real modern American political culture...money. What would the investor class much prefer to do ? Rather than pay taxes to shore up and reinforce infrastructure in preparing for earthquake, they much rather reap the profits from rebuilding [it] after the destruction.

What's a million lives in America, when it comes to...making some real money ? Wars kill many more over history, most of which is designed for a profit.
