What I found funny about takeninhand.com/personal.ads

A. The high barrier to entry :
(1) a substantial article (at least 1000 words) about what you want in a Taken In Hand marriage;
(2) a substantial Taken In Hand article (at least 1000 words) for the front page of this site.

B. The hypocrisy:
Anything that would be suitable for a BDSM or spanking site will be immediately deleted.

[Many of the articles are totally suitable for BDSM]

Sorry to pull the quote out of order here, but I've been thinking about this a bit since it came up.  (Disclaimer, I still haven't been to the site itself, so I'm going more on the premise.)

Not so much the bit about stuff not being suitable for a BDSM or spanking site, but the concept behind this is actually pretty good.  Compare this to here at CM.  Wouldn't it be fantastic if there were a similar policy?  A task of a thousand words before a person was allowed to join would give a great overview of who they were as a person, what kind of experience they have, etc.

Granted, I know that is absolutely too much work for the Mods here, but if other places have paid staff to handle the incoming essays, I would say it would be a pretty good positive.

Perhaps more people would see the hilarity if you posted links and blurbs. I visited the site and get where you are coming from.

Does no one else see the irony?

this is my point so maybe ironic is the word i should have chosen... Even though i got a god laugh from it... To prevent the 5 deqath threats i received i truly meant ironic.... You cannot truly mean that you hate spanking your wife if you get off on it.... Imho

I believe there is a difference between Taken in Hand and BDSM. You don't. That's okay. (Though I did rather clearly post earlier in this thread how they are different.) Your beliefs certainly don't warrant death threats, and mine don't warrant being laughed at.

I've posted a bit about poly, Christianity (or lack of it in my life) and TIH in the last few days. Doing so in such quick succession to each other, it's become clear to me that I love the idea behind TIH for warm and comforting feelings of tradition and faith (in God, not necessarily Christianity) it provokes in me, a feeling of true belonging to the love of my life, and a safety in exposing my weakest self to the man who can hold me in place. But, there are parts of TIH I don't agree with, and so as much as I long for it, I can't say I will ever have a true TIH relationship.

But...the site stirs up in me my emotions about my submission in a deeper way than general BDSM sites. So I love it. I'm drawn to the concept. I can feel it in my gut that it is different than, say, my last D/s relationship in the same way that people can feel in their gut that they've found true love. I can't explain it away, and it is sometimes un-defendable. But it moves me, I find comfort in it, and I identify with it.

Take into consideration some of the writing we have seen on here, I would hope the Mods or the staff would be extremely well paid to make up for enduring to read a bunch of things that are possibly utter tripe, then take into consideration how much porn inspired fantasies they would have to read... I think I am feeling a bit queasy already... It's not a job I would wish on anybody I remotely like!

1000 words.. that's about 2 pages on standard letter size. How many times have we seen tl;dr.. people don't much like to read beyond two paragraphs much less two pages. I don't think the idea is at all fantastic.. in fact, I think it's a pretty bad idea which would do more to separate folks than bring them together.

This isn't school and treating people like school children when we are all consenting adults is not in the best interest of the site.

No, I don't think it would be at all. I've known some great folks who have had wonderful, enriching experiences that couldn't write it into a cohesive thousand word essay to meet everyone's approval. By the time the paragraph nazi's/grammar nazi's/spelling nazi's finished with them, all they had to offer would be diminished and/or dismissed. Writing isn't everyone's forte and such a policy would exclude some great folks..........luci

a totally fucked up idea. the point of that essay task is to make sure that only people who agree with the site owners get on it. it gives you a really sweet site where everybody sucks each other's cocks cause thaey all agree. i mean just how many threads of  "i totally agree" and "qft" could you stomach.

and for here? what the fuck is some 18 year old with fantasies of being tied up and fucked raw going to have to say that is going to take 1000 words? you'll be the first one bitching about all the cheap assed wanker porn that is going to produce. the thing that makes this site so fucking good is that it is so fucking easy to join. it takes all of a minute and you're on your way. no fucking around with proof of age or credit cards or confirmations or reviews. just a few fucking clicks and you're here. sure it lets in a lot of wankers and fuckwits and trolls, but they're a fucking gas, there are times you can spend an entire evening just laughing your ass off at them.

this place is a free for all and that's what makes it good.

LadyPact -> RE: LMFAO / takeninhand (7/20/2011 9:34:50 PM)

Hannah, we simply must teaching you that I actually enjoy a good m/m cock sucking.  [8D]

I wasn't thinking of it as open letters for posting.  I thought that was how folks got the opportunity to join the other site.  That means I'm thinking that their staff over there reviews what people submit.  Not like what happens when somebody writes a thousand word post here and everyone gets to comment.

I don't know about the 'for the good of the site' bit.  There would definitely be some benefits.  Maybe less of the crap content.  Either way, the site isn't one big, happy, BDSM family, where we're all interested in cohesion.    I'd see it as still folks with different methods.  Nobody said that tops/bottoms couldn't write just on play while M/s folks might write on how they see structure in a dynamic.  Even if it was just fantasy, but a person wanted to learn more about it, they might write about that.  (Though you are right, Hannah, I don't care much for fantasists, personally.)

Yes, I've visited the site. My impression and opinion of it are quite different from yours. I see it as a site where people relate their experiences in what they see as a "taken in hand" relationship or one they hope to establish. I believe the goal of the site is to help illustrate that type of relationship to others who might find it is the type they may want to pursue. In other words, it's there to inform. The relationships described are, as with any other type of intimate relationship, defined by those involved within the relationship and not those outside of it.

What a lovely, thoughtful post. I enjoyed reading that :)

Thank you. :)

Yes, I guess it would be exclusionary. I suppose I wasn't thinking about that. I was thinking about the idea of knowing a little something about the people that post, just for fun. (Which is maybe what led to my other posting about re-introducing ourselves.)

A thread is a great idea and one I can support because it remains an option. One can choose to put information out there or not and it's all good. With that option in place, there really isn't a need to bog down the mod staff with having to read 1000 word essay's from people hoping to be allowed to enter these hallowed halls. We're good.. but we ain't all that. [:D]

Thank the lord! Grow the fuck up!

Seriously?!?!? Death threats?!?!?!??????? I have to say that I am not at all thrilled to admit we are from the same state. Then again, I never have been impressed with those I've met from the Des Moines area. Especially after a day, at a kid's baseball park, people watching.

You made a fool of yourself and got a case of ass because it was pointed out to you. Which caused you to make a bigger fool of yourself. Death threats?!?!? I don't suppose you are related to Bachmann are you?

A LOT of people here don't necessarily get the thrill that other people get out of doing whatever it is they do. But yanno, as sane (relatively speaking) mature ( relatively speaking) adults (also relatively speaking.....) we TRY to accept it is what it is and be somewhat respectful. Relatively speaking......

So i saw every O/one talking about this site called TakeninHand and thought i would go check it out. It is hilarious. The articles just cracked me up. W/we all try not to be judgemental... Right? Its hard with these folks. Have you visited this site? Whats Y/your opinion? i read one article on rape roleplay and wanted to shake the Author and scream "YOU AREA DOM!!!"

i had never heard of it until now. really cool site. i like the ideas expressed there, aside from the Christian slant but i don't get the impression one has to be Christian to be in that type of relationship. the articles are pretty good. i don't see what's funny about the taken in hand site at all. i liked it. to each their own.

OKCupid rewards for longer essays and participation on the site. It's currently bugging me to expand my profile to 1,000 words. If you fill out a certain amount of questions you get X rewards; do Y for Z rewards. (They have more programming geeks over there.)

I prefer a bit of a barrier to entry, which is one of the reasons why I don't use Craigslist for personals. When I used alt (in the dark days before I found CM), I scorned people who did not have paid memberships.

If a man's essay here is blank, his first email had better be truly killer. In fact, I've only met IRL one man with a blank essay and we never made it to date 2.
