And if you do?
What do you buy yourself?

And when not, why?

I just buy myself something I really like to have and not especially needed.

After my mother died, I realized how many presents she used to get me for my birthday & for Christmas. So the first year, I started a tradition of buying myself gifts. It's always something that I want that's a little more expensive than something I'd get just because I want or need it. One year I bought myself a video game system, another a tv, still another, a home entertainment system. Sometimes I will buy myself shoes or clothes. I have also bought myself diamonds, because I really love diamonds & nobody else ever buys them for me. It's nice to treat oneself well, I think.

I do.  But what I like even more is buying myself Xmas gifts all year, wrapping them and then putting them away.  On Xmas day, I open them, and you know what?  The clothes always fit, and I always like whatever is in the package.  Also, I've forgotten what is in the package, so it's always a surprise.  (I buy a lot of stuff on sale, too!)

I don't really, because I'm bad remembering dates like birthdays and all that, and on quite a few occasions I had forgotten mine completely.

In case I really want something I'll get it, if it will make me happier and it is within reason, yup, I go for it.

I have indeed brought myself gifts for my birthday.  Nothing too, too extravagant, just an extra indulgence.  Why not, I'm worth it

**Eta, I'll buy a movie that just came out at full price instead of waiting until it's been reduced, clothes, jewelery once in awhile**

Absolutely. This past year I bought myself a netbook and took a trip.

I'd just forget the date and get angry at myself and not talk to myself for days.

Not usually. My birthday is right at christmas, so I'm usually so strapped for cash at that point that I never spend anything extra on myself. I've only ever had one birthday party as an adult anyway, and it wasn't really my birthday party, I just announced that I was turning 30 at a friends new years eve party so someone made me a cake.

I'd like to have a birthday party once. Like, with actual friends and merriment. Not really concerned about the gift part. I'd just like the friends.

Sometimes.

As for what.......depends on the year, what I really wanted at the time and the money I had to spend.

It's just not as much fun for me to buy it because I always have the bill.

I buy myself something I actually don't need in daily life, just something I find beautifull.

I was once told by my psych. I should do that, give myself anything... even if I didn't have any money to spend. That year I invited some friends over and had a nice dinner and evening. For me... it was the best b-day till then. Last year I was invited by my friend, to have a bbq at my birthday over at her place... surprisingly she invited some more friends... Made me happy.

This year, it appears I'll be spending this day on my own. With my 2 girlies. I do not mind.
I am a bit of strange. I will not invite, but I want my friends to remember it by themselfs.. I hate asking.
Well, I'll see what happens this year

I buy myself stuff all the time. Yarn and toys, mostly. (I mean toys... collectible vinyl toys, like Kidrobot makes). So I tag something as a birthday gift when I have done something especially egregious like buying a new ball-jointed doll. I also got myself presents when I graduated from college each time.

Eventually I will give myself a present for buying the accounting practice. Yay presents!

I always buy myself something. I usually buy myself what no one else bought me that I was wanting. I figure if no one else is gonna get it for me I may as well.

I usually then treat myself to dinner and doing something by myself that I've always wanted to do or that I enjoy doing.

Yup I do, I call it self-gifting. I decide what it will be on the spur of the moment

Yes, I do.  When I was a kid the birthday presents were great...mom got me lots to unwrap even if it was stuff like a crayon book or later on, something I loved like a small bottle of cinnamon.  There were too many years of my being broke and that day passing like any other day, and of getting presents like...granny panties and ugly tee shirts.

At least now I know I will get something I like.  Pssst...new Pokemon games for the Nintendo DS have usually come out in April, lol, my birthday month.  During other years when they came out with some Pokemon game I didn't like (like Pokemon Ranger), I bought myself all the seasons on DVD of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and of Star Trek TNG, and clothes I was nuts over that were not on sale.

Um...sometimes I buy myself toys.  (Not THOSE kind, ya pervs.)  One time I found a Barbie I loved that had the wildest hair I have ever seen, reminding me of Starburst candy.  Neon pink with neon orange and neon yellow.  Alas, several years later one of my cats got ahold of it and ripped the head off.  (If anyone knows the name of that Barbie so I can go ebaying to get me another one...)

One year I bought all the electric Pikachu toothbrushes I saw in a store.  The batteries are easily replaced and I am still using them, lol.  They make me smile and I love that cuteness.

This birthday I bought Pokemon Black (and bought my son Pokemon White).  I have been thinking that I should start getting my mother something on my birthday...a sort of thank you gift.

Next year if they come out with another Pokemon game I covet...aargh...you know what my gift to myself will be.

Otherwise, one year I bought a lot of books I coveted...and there are still more on my list.

On my 61st birthday, I wanted a very special party, but I lived in a new town & didn't know but 2 people. So I invited all the neighborhood kids & got balloons & bubbles & other toys for them to play with. I decorated my apt & got hats & noisemakers. I got a plastic birthday tablecloth & put it on the floor for the kids to eat their cake & ice cream. I don't think I've had a more memorable birthday party in my life.

When my Norwegian Grandfather would come in from working & find me there, he would give me $5 & send me to the store for "red pop & bakery stuff" & keep the change. Then we would have a party, just the 2 of us to celebrate the fact that I was there. He was a very wise man. If you want a party, make one yourownself!!! Go to the store & get some red pop & bakery stuff & celebrate!!

I think I know the red pop you're talking about, they have either the same stuff or something similar in Denmark. My mom is from there and I remember tasting a red pop. Yum!

I have not done this but always wanted to (and now it's feasible but am not interested - meh I'm fickle).  I wanted to get a charm bracelet and add a charm for every time I got something published.  Each charm would represent what had been published (academic paper, story, poem, etc.).  Now that I've been published quite a bit, it's lost the allure.  That's kind of sad.  Oh well.

I think that's a very nice idea, and if it's okay with you, I might steal it for a gift for my sister. She just published her first book.
