imperatrixx -> Why are you proud of America? (7/22/2011 2:51:20 PM)

Inspired by another thread that said that conservatives and rich people had more pride in their country.

So I'm curious, why does America make you proud of it?

And before this begins, 2 guildelines.

1. I want concrete things that make you proud, not abstract ideals about "what America means." Saying, for example, "America is a land where anyone can come and make something of themselves" is a bullshit 4th grade answer...citing specific examples about America's immigration policies shows that you are actually proud of the nation called the USA, not just proud of an abstract ideal called "America."

2. Preferably something current. If you have to reach all the way back to the founding fathers to find something to be proud of, it doesn't count.

I'll go first. I'm proud of the diverse cultures in America, the fact that each little part of the country has its own people with its own character. I think that's pretty cool and I can find something endearing about each one of those groups. I like how all those cultures can come together as one nation...that together as a whole we balance each other out and make the nation stronger than it would be if it were 7 or 8 different smaller nations.

I am HUGELY proud that I live in a country that does not demand I follow any one religioun to be a citizen.

I am also very hugely proud that I have the freedom to criticize government without fear of persecution and can vote for the people I want to vote for.

Just the first two that always come to mind.

And "diversity" isnt as abstract and cliched as 1?

What makes me most proud of America is indeed its abstract ideals and the stubborn refusal to bow to those who would abandon them.

Maybe I did leave that a little abstract...what I mean is, you can see how people from, say, the Pacific Northwest, the southwest, the midwest, the northeast, the south and the deep south, are entirely different cultures, with different foods, different accents, different words for things sometimes, but they're all still American. Visiting Oregon is visiting an entirely different America than visiting Arkansas, both culturally and geographically. I love how America literally encompasses everything - every religion, every ethnicity, every type of climate and terrain, but it's all still America.

Oh, I am definitely proud of that, too :)

I'm also proud of the way America fiercely defends freedom of speech, even unpopular speech. It's a country where a Jewish lawyer from the ACLU will volunteer to represent Neo Nazis, because as an American he can put the ideals of free speech above any personal offense taken.

That's a really big deal, and one that's fairly unique. Even many western countries have limits on 'offensive' speech, but in America you can say what you want without it being a crime.

oh yeh major proud to be in a country that CLAIMS me as their subject-citizen and imposes taxes on me without my consent and without my abilityto change it except their fear of reprisal.

Gotta love a country that FORCES you into their secular atheist religion called government just like the king did with captured enfranchised slaves, yeh buhba!

I am so happy that I can vote for the next one who will do a worse job than the last one.  fuck what more could I ask huh?

I am thrilled watching this country commit genocide stealing the lands and oil from the middle eastern countries and goading the dummies into thinking they are evil.

I am so happy with this country I could just shit!

I would sign that, though I don't live in the US and it seems pretty much normal on my side of the pond. I think people call it civilization?

juliaoceania -> RE: Why are you proud of America? (7/22/2011 6:35:15 PM)

I am proud that as a nation we keep giving people more rights, instead of taking them away, and we might have to fight wars to get there, or have riots to mend our ways, but eventually we Americans try to do the right thing...

Latest example, the ending of "Don't Ask Don't Tell"

Each generation has their particular civil rights battle, and giving gay people rights is the battle of our time.

slvemike4u -> RE: Why are you proud of America? (7/22/2011 6:42:46 PM)

I am proud to be an American because I was on the Mall in Jan.2008... and because a few Republican State Senators voted their conscious and now all in the State of New York can get married to whomever they so choose(providing of course that who you have chosen ...will have you ).
These are not all the reasons I am proud to be an American, but they are recent examples of how my country strives to live up to it's ideals...so,etimes struggling mightily with itself, going thru somewhat violent contortions to get there...but we always seem to get there...a little late,a little worse for wear....but we are Americans and we get there.

dcnovice -> RE: Why are you proud of America? (7/22/2011 6:52:34 PM)

Ever since I saw this thread title, I've been thinking of a story told by the first President Bush in a speech at the end of the first Iraq War.

A group of Iraqi soldiers, visibly terrified, came to surrender. The first American soldier to reach them put his arm around one of the Iraqi soldiers and said, "It's all right. It's going to be all right."

The simple human decency of that reaction makes me proud to be an American.

Edit: typo

Because we stand for and act toward a higher moral ground.

We don`t act savagely because there is savagery in other nations and places. We don`t let the lowest and worst dictate how we conduct ourselves as a nation.

We are one of free-est, if not the free-est nation on the planet.

We enjoy more liberty and health and freedom than most others and we keep more of we earn than any other nation on earth.

Because we are a nation others look up to.Not just for the stuff we have but for what America stands for and for what we fight for.

We enjoy much more than things plentiful or freedom from want.We enjoy freedom of thought, association, religious beliefs and practices, commerce and travel.

And our Constitution.

A more perfect and adaptable document have`nt been written since and is one reason why our form of government is the world`s oldest.
