Okay, mind you i just heard this on FOX and changed the channel but swore i heard that someone -- didn't catch the name -- has proposed that if they miss the deadline congress will not get paid until such time they come up with a bill  due by August 2 and will not be able to recoup those losses after a decision/bill goes through.

Sorry if this is wrong but i swear i just heard this.

Thanks for any clarification.

Well.....after you filter out all the pro 'let the country burn to hell' Tea Party nutcakes, you might find this:

quote:

“We should be treated just like other federal employees,” said the bill’s sponsor Sen. Barbara Boxer (D-Calif.). “What’s important to me is that we sacrifice, we here in the United States Senate, in the House as well.”
SOURCE

However, it seem the Senate Republicans are just 'to busy' trying to save their asses from being rightfully blamed if this fails. Whose responsibility is to create the budget? The House. Who keeps sending the bills that they knew BEFORE they were sent that the bills would fail to pass the Senate let alone the President? The House. Who controls the US House of Representatives: Republicans!

This bill, from Sen. Boxer comes NOT for the House but the Senate. Since it appears the House is unable to pull its collective head from its collective ass for longer than one nanosecond to do something USEFUL for the American public. Hence, the Senate is taking a step once more to show the American Public its doing what it can to advert disaster. Funny that Democrats have come half way at the comprise table and Republicans are no where to be seen.

That the politicians aren't getting paid should go without saying.

If they can't do their job, and they gamble the entire world economy to spite the elected President to boot (from the outside looking in, that is precisely what it looks like they're doing), it would be downright insane to let them do it without some immediate consequences.

And however much some like to call this theatre, I would point out that goods from the USA now cost me a lot less in my own currency than was the case prior to the onset of budget negotiations. Whatever people hope to gain from those negotiations, I got to wonder whether it is possible to recoup those losses in real value, regardless of the outcome of the negotiations. The losses are substantial.

Health,
al-Aswad.

This would mean more if it meant they LOST that pay, not that they collect lump sums once the deal is cut.

Have you actually read some of the stuff that has come out of the US House of Representatives recently?

I'm not talking what the media shows or publishs, I'm tallking directly from the horse's mouth?

If you understand the problem(s) to this budget crisis, keep an open mind, the material coming out of there is simply silly. The budget is about $1.65 Trillion in a deficit. No one disagrees with that. But I simply do not see the logic in dropping $1.65 trillion off the budget. But then, that's because I know what will happen to the economy, unemployment, and the long term health of the nation for the next few years if we did that. The majority of the Democrats (including the President) are aware of this. Unfortunately, it doesnt seem most Republicans and their supports can acknowledge the reality. If they did, they would be at the comprise table with the Democrats discussing things they dont want....like raising taxes. Unfortunately, most of them signed a pledge not to raise taxes. So, if they want to be re-elected, they cant raise taxes. However, if taxes are not raised, the country will surely default on its obligations.

Which is more important to those Republicans, BamaD? Getting Re-Elected to Office? Or doing the same thing as Democrats and making some hard sacrifices? Democrats have been reported for grudgingly seeking budget cuts beyond their usual $200-250 Billion mark.

That is what the Republican House has tried to push out.....rubbish. Oh, an a 'balanced budget amendment'. Which would be fine, except for WHO is demanding such a thing. It would be like someone killing everyone in a town and they saying "Hey guys, lets create a law that penalizes anyone that murders someone else? Guys? Guys? HEEEEELLLLLOOOOOO?"

I agree, it is struggle for votes, or something like that. But.....

"And however much some like to call this theatre, I would point out that goods from the USA now cost me a lot less in my own currency than was the case prior to the onset of budget negotiations."

Just what goods would those be ? I really want to know, and I don't mean wheat, bombs or jet airliners. What do common people in other countries buy that is produced here ?

I am not being sarcastic.

...computers and software. Well, the companies we buy them from are US. Don't know if the actual manufacturing is done there.

I like it.  We do that with our State legislature in CA, now.  We used to just stop the workers pay, but now we withhold the elected official's pay if the budget deadline is missed.  The budget battle was shorter this year.

No MM, i distinctly heard that they would NOT be allowed to be reimbursed the monies they lost.

Hell, i think they should be the FIRST federal employees who have their pay and the first concept of cuts before any benefits are cut to retirement or aid.

HELL YES!

Bring some immediate accountability into the process!

Are there any current articles on this? The Politico article was from March and I'm just seeing March and April articles in Google.

No Budget? No Paycheck!

On June 15, the legislature did pass a budget. They thought they had discovered a loophole in the pay-cutting law. The law, after all, didn't say that the governor had to sign whatever they passed -- as long as they put something on his desk that had made it through both houses, the lawmakers thought they'd continue to get paid. So they hustled through a budget which was patently unacceptable on its face -- a budget they knew would never make it into law. By doing so, they were taunting Governor Brown by saying, in essence: "There -- we passed a 'budget' you'll never sign, now where's my paycheck?"

The Democratic legislators were positive they'd wiggled out of any possible pay cuts. Brown vetoed the budget -- the first time that's ever happened in the state -- and the budget squabbles continued. But then the state controller (also a Democrat) ruled that the budget the Democratic legislators had passed was not "balanced," and therefore didn't qualify under the pay-cutting law. Since Controller John Chiang was the guy who signed the paychecks, he had the power to stop them. Which he did.

And for the next twelve days, California legislators worked for free. They each lost an average of $4,830 in that period. Some of them (Democrats and Republicans) even had the gall to whine about not being paid in public. This was met with precisely zero sympathy from the public.

Yesterday, they passed a budget.

The proposal apparently was made by Senate Democrats, but - remember the Tea Party Republicans mantra:

"Any compromise or any agreement with any Democrat (especially President Obama) on any issue is a surrender - and we will not surrender!"

Agreed. It's a symbolic gesture. Cutting their pay or tripling their pay makes absolutely no difference in this $1.27 trillion dance.

You're right.

The USA produces corn and movies.

Everything else comes from EU, India and China, these days.

Buying stuff off eBay is pretty neat, though, since I can pay using monopoly money, essentially.

[whistles....and shakes head]  Congress is a co-equal branch of our government.  Why would you suspend their pay?  Because they want deep cuts?  Do you realize that no one has talked about cutting anything?  Nothing.  Not one fucking dime.  No one.  Not the republicans and not the democrats.  Not one cut

"IF" there was a plan that not one dime more would be spent than what was spent in 2011, the CBO would announce that the plan cut billions...perhaps even trillions...of dollars.  Everything that is in the budget, without any expansion in government whatsoever, is in line to get funded with a 7% increase.  Therefore, just spending the same would cause the nit wits in DC to say that they cut 7%.  They didn't cut anything...they just didn't increase.

So...is anyone talking about cuts?  No.  And cuts ten years down the road is such a fallacy.  Neither the congress nor the president can bind the future congress to adhere to those cuts.  Cuts must be made.  If you hear people talking about 1.5 trillion in cuts...there is no "cut" at all.  If you start hearing things like "7 trillion in cuts and these are the programs that will be cut and these programs will be eliminated" (which you will not hear, by the way), THEN they will be dealing with "cuts".  Don't hold your breath.

I`ll believe it when I see it.I`d like to take away the free healthcare insurance we give from anyone apposed to healthcare reform, too. Not holding my breath.

"Cuts must be made"

And/or revenue must be increased.

Or both.

Which is what the President has proposed.

Boner`s "my way or the highway" is getting him neither.
