The major criticism of him were that he did not have the experience, nor the temperament to be the President of the US.

By who's estimation are we taking as having expertise here regarding such said experience and temperament?

The same people that consider being a Boraxo salesman and otherwise excellent corporate shill as constituting 'experience' and 'temperament'?

By almost any reasonable, adult version of "experience" and "temperament".

That's what I thought.

Unnecessary snide and snarky remark, for no purpose.

Yeah, but there's also this.

Notice the people hanging out with dinosaurs. They talk about this place in the book.

"We," announced Ham [museum tour giude], "are taking the dinosaurs back from the evolutionists!" And everybody cheered.

We've had pseudo-intellectuals for our whole history, we just never gave them credence, and by god, we didn't put the fuckin fools on the air or in mainstream newspapers.

it talks about that in the book too!

I swear, this is a really good book. Y'all should read it.

mnottertail -> RE: Idiot America: How Stupidity Became a Virtue in the Land of the Free (7/28/2011 11:10:48 AM)

I got lots of books to read, that one isn't going to make the list very soon, when something as plain as this is ubitquious around me, I fear for our human race.

Fine.

If you consider a Boraxo salesman and corporate shill as having the experience and temperament to be president, then so be it.

Pardon my pointing out that there are more than a few adults who think there might be better places to look, and it's somewhat disappointing that you actually find such people to be not reasonable, by your standards.

I think a lot of the so-called "anti-intellectualism" in the US has more to do with having too damn many pseudo-intellectuals pretending to be intellectuals, than it does with some kind of refusal to give credence to new ideas, and well-thought out positions.

I agree that is true. Think of the popular Religious Right "historian" David Barton - Points 1, 2 3, 4 7, 8 & 9 fit him to a T as a Pseudo-intellectual.

And think of the Pseudo-intellectuals who have based their entire way of life on Ayn Rand's "The Fountainhead" and "Atlas Shrugged" - ignoring almost every other book ever written and every other philosopher who ever lived.

Moonhead -> RE: Idiot America: How Stupidity Became a Virtue in the Land of the Free (7/28/2011 12:23:40 PM)

Isn't that a big part of the appeal of Rand, though? She tells you what to think, so you don't need to bother looking at any other books ever again....

By "Boraxo" salesman I assume you mean Reagan?

Who is the "corporate shill"?  That could define too many people, for one point-of-view.

Yes we did.

Well, as far as "putting on the air", that is a new phenomena, but for putting them in the public eye, that is as old as history, I'm afraid.

Putting them into office came about along with democracy.

Yeah, Firm, no system of government is perfect, that's a lock.

Have you never found anyone on the more "lefterly" regions of the political spectrum that qualifies as pseudo-intellectual?  (or as a True Believer, or a nut-job)?

Yeah his 8 years as a tremendously successful governor in CA that faced the same problems as the US was facing wasnt worthwhile experience.

Firm, please warn me before you quote something from that idiot. Ive been very successful in not seeing his tripe up to this point.

Noam Chomsky is the poster child, imo.

Yes, the corporate shill nonpareil was and will always be Reagan. He was all over radio and TV until he got elected governor, where time spent sending out the Cali SS to attack unfortunate constituents, and then back on the airwaves again until elected president.

I heard his late 70's radio shows alongside Paul Harvey's "Page Two."

I never listened for more than two minutes before tuning to the classical music station (an excellent one, in Spartanburg SC) or shoving in a cassette tape.

Of course I had no use for either's politics, Reagan especially having a record of sic'ing police on protesters in California (would this be perhaps what you refer to regarding that  temperament and experience thing, outside of the Death Valley Days and Boraxo host resume?), but at least Paul Harvey came up with some cute turn of phrase once every two or three weeks, whereas Reagan told us that trees caused pollution, and further tortured us elsewise.

Thank goodness for that classical music station in Spartanburg.

Sorry, will.

I've not interacted with him much, and haven't yet formed a "final opinion" on whether the gom jabber would take him out of this firmament.

Ok, enough.

It was "Borax" and the Twenty Mule Team ... as in 20 Mule Team Borax.

That post should have closed the deal! 8 years as Governor of the largest state population wise, with an economy that placed it in the top 10 IN THE WORLD vs a community organizer and "I vote absent" Senator for 3 months before he started his Presidential campaign. hmmmmmm let me think....which had more experience.

imperatrixx -> RE: Idiot America: How Stupidity Became a Virtue in the Land of the Free (7/28/2011 1:11:01 PM)

I don't know...Clinton only served a term and a half as Senator and I think she would have been a good President.
