Sufferin succotash! Can you imagine? Cute as hell baby though.

I'm not totally surprised by the story. About 25 years ago there was a woman I worked with, and that if she hadn't said something I would never have guessed she was pregnant. Yes she was aware of the fact that she was expecting. What was strange was that it did not show at all. She was still wearing her everyday clothes three weeks before the due date.

What I find somewhat baffling in the video is....didn't she miss like 8 periods? and not wonder why?

You get these cases come up in the news about once a year. Some women have very irregular periods to start with, but there are also documented cases of women continuing to "bleed", even though it isn't a "proper" period, monthly, during pregnancy.

And what a nice couple :) All the best to them ... I bet though, under "surprised" in the dictionary, there's going to be a picture of her face as it happened, from now on :)

GreedyTop -> RE: Un-expecting mother has baby in her bathroom (7/30/2011 7:27:25 AM)

my period has NEVER been regular.. and my mom *(whose period was irregular, too) bled through 5 months of pregnancy.. yet she still knew she was knocked up (thus teh marriage that legitimized me *snort*) when she was about 2-3 months along.. .

she didnt have the 'symptoms'... morning sickness, etc

LillyBoPeep -> RE: Un-expecting mother has baby in her bathroom (7/30/2011 9:47:13 AM)

i didn't think it was possible to "not know" until i met a woman who this happened to. =p some women do have periods you can set a watch by, but i don't think most of us are in that category. add to that that the little dude was pretty small when he was born, she probably just thought "oh i've got a little tummy, maybe i'll go on a diet." hahaha =p
cute story.

I don't think this is very common, but I knew a woman when I was in High School who was surprised by her baby. And I had a roommate years ago who didn't show at all. When she went in to labor & went to the hospital, the staff there didn't believe she was about to deliver because she was thin & didn't show. Even her parents had no clue she was pregnant. It happens.

I, on the other hand, started showing about 20 minutes after conception & just kept getting huger as time went on. I went from a 23" waist to a 44" waist with my daughter & she only weighed 6 lbs 6 oz. We all thought for sure I was having at least 2, if not a litter.

Lockit -> RE: Un-expecting mother has baby in her bathroom (7/30/2011 4:24:47 PM)

My daughter called me one day and said; Mom, K went to the hospital, they prepped her for surgery for a tumor and the surgeon decided to check more on a gut feeling, after she read what the other doctors said. The tumor turned out to be a baby, we need everything for the baby as she has nothing. We need to go shopping.

What amazes me is how many of the babies you hear about are healthy and all is well. My daughter's friend and baby were not so lucky. She has serious damages from lack of oxygen and the birth process they put her through thinking she was a tumor. It's heart breaking.

zephyroftheNorth -> RE: Un-expecting mother has baby in her bathroom (7/30/2011 4:31:05 PM)

Heartbreaking indeed Lockit. I'm puzzled why they didn't do (more) imaging before booking her for surgery.

Lockit -> RE: Un-expecting mother has baby in her bathroom (7/30/2011 4:32:43 PM)

That's what I said zeph. How the hell could that happen? I guess the lawyers will figure that out because the hospital now has some answering to do. lol

zephyroftheNorth -> RE: Un-expecting mother has baby in her bathroom (7/30/2011 4:36:55 PM)

Working in Oncology as I do, it seems really odd to rush someone to surgery. Usually all kinds of testing is done beforehand. Thank God for the surgeon, otherwise Lord knows what could have happened. Still I don't understand what happened. Clearly someone fucked up and I hope they have to answer for it.

Lockit -> RE: Un-expecting mother has baby in her bathroom (7/30/2011 4:48:03 PM)

I thought my daughter was getting her facts wrong and didn't know what she was saying. I asked if they had seen the tumor and why it went down the way she said it did. It actually happened like she said and the surgeon was the one that said... no... there is more to this and checked her. K's mother was a nurse at that hospital too. Why she didn't catch the fact that they had no evidence that it was in fact a tumor and didn't test, I cannot say, except she is an idiot. It sure wouldn't have gotten past me.

She is a pretty little baby and happy as can be... but her problems are so bad. Right now when she is small it is easier, but later, this is going to be very hard on her family. It breaks my heart to watch her jerk and her eyes roll and how she cannot play and do all that the other babies are doing. She doesn't get the attention the other babies do and you don't see video's of her and pictures shared like the others. It is simply heart breaking.

zephyroftheNorth -> RE: Un-expecting mother has baby in her bathroom (7/30/2011 4:53:29 PM)

Are you saying that no imaging whatsoever was done because that is exceptionally odd. Usually some kind of imaging is done before surgery. How did they diagnose the tumor if not by imaging?

Lockit -> RE: Un-expecting mother has baby in her bathroom (7/30/2011 5:03:38 PM)

I don't believe the ER doc did anything but say it was a tumor, but I don't know all. By the time we were getting information, people were shutting up. Still, he couldn't have gotten any imaging, that is clear. I'm sure that is why the surgeon stopped it all.

I'm surprised the E.R. doc didn't order an hCG test. I would imagine she had abdominal pain as part of her symptoms, which would have been the impetus for the doc to order it and rule out that possibility. They would have had to draw blood before going to surgery and could have made the hCG a part of it.
It's a sad situation though. And a reminder of how fragile life can be. I wish that family well.

zephyroftheNorth -> RE: Un-expecting mother has baby in her bathroom (7/30/2011 6:38:47 PM)

I don't know that they would do an hCG for abdominal pain, they certainly didn't when I went to the ER with the same symptoms. I am however surprised that apparently they did no imaging to see what was going on. How else could they diagnose a tumor.

Are you sure? (i.e. did you see your records)
Mind you, in the USA there is the ever present awareness of malpractice to prompt docs to order the tests they do sometimes. Not that this isn't a possibility in Canada, but I know there are differences.

zephyroftheNorth -> RE: Un-expecting mother has baby in her bathroom (7/30/2011 6:53:04 PM)

Yeah I'm sure, they only did a CBC - and told me so. You could be right, in the US there is certainly a higher probablility of being sued than there is here.

You had abdominal pain and they only ordered a CBC? I'm surprised.

I think it depends on the E.R. physician as well. I had a gung ho guy (resident possibly?) who ordered some extra tests on me and then expressed surprise when they were negative. (This was in Canada.)
