I was wondering who'd be the first to point out this exaggeration.

Ummm..getting away from the discussion about financial markets..

I remember seeing a few studies on IQ which suggested that men tended towards the extremes more than women, though given the bias and multiple factors affecting IQ tests this may mean very little. I've always thought that the cognitive abilities that women generally do better with are more suited towards modern living than those that men do. i.e. verbal vs visuo-spatial tasks.

Its hardly a secret that, when segregated, girls excel more than boys in school..though again, there are many factors to consider.

Oh and I should add that the total collapse of many of the world's financial markets are a testimony being in charge does not equate to guaranteed optimal performance.

That would be completely wrong.

It was certainly optimal performance from those who figured out how to game the system and walk off with millions.

I'm just wondering: can someone explain how this kind of research will help move society towards a happier and more harmonious position? As opposed to research which focuses. say, on the comparative superiorities of one racial group over another?

I have been out of psychology for quite a while, but I presume that the next step would be to look at the reasons why one group flourishes whilst another doesn't. These things do filter though...eventually.

That's surely one way of interpreting it.

I think the other way to interpret it is of recognizing that whether it be for sociological or biological factors, women bring another perspective to management, decision making and power. I've acknowledged quite a few times that the title is sensationalist and there are reasons why I used it, but that in the end, I don't think one gender is really superior than another, just different.

That said, I (and a rapidly increasing amount of research) is studying how mixing in a little more female perspectives in the decision making might be a good thing for our society in general, how it might bring an equilibrium. This requires adaptation because for the longest time, the women who ascended to power had to act a lot like men to get things done (think Thatcher). But now there is a push to perhaps see what happens when we let women do it their way.

I agree - the research is simply research and the bias is shown in what's reported.  Most of the general populous will take what's reported as truth, though, and run with it.

Even the basic research can be manipulated quite easily. Ever hear a commercial saying 9 out of 10 doctors recommend this? It's true! Because I go out and interview 1000 doctors and find the 9 that would say what I want. Then I do a completely new survey that just happens to have those 9 and one other. I took a basic stat course last Spring, and just knowing the basics, I could do a study proving that men are more intelligent than women, all without actually lying. Data is easy to twist.

So . . . why the apparent consensus, these days, that differences in the characteristics of genders are worthy of study, but differences in the characteristics of races are not?

Nah. I see the point: it'd be a good and desirable result if the non-flourishing group were to be encouraged by the findings of such research. But it'd be a pisspoor, but all too common, result if it led primarily to more acrimony between the two relevant groups. A flavour of which acrimony we can pretty clearly see here on this thread, for instance . . . .

My point was with regards to why, in schools, in many subjects boys are not doing so well as girls. I disagree little with regards to a change of perspective of those in power i.e. your last point.

A summary of a news report which is, itself, a summary of a journal article which, if I'm reading between the lines properly, essentially says "preliminary data suggests that there may be a link between men, overconfidence, and deficiencies in stock trading - hereby requesting funding to do full study." And, of course, no link to the original study. Seems legit.

The assumption being that supposed differences between races are ignored? Far from it (again, its been a while)
