LadyAngelika -> Why Women Are Better at Everything (7/31/2011 12:14:54 PM)

This recent research report cites several sources over the last decade that confirmed some of my hypotheses:
http://healthland.time.com/2011/06/28/why-women-are-better-at-everything/

This provocatively-titled research report highlights some interesting findings. Now before you get all up in arms and say this is a generalization or that it isn't true, read the research and consider the findings.

Whether it's reporting that research has shown that:
"women were more likely than men to make money in the market, mostly because they didn't take as many risks. And why are they risk-averse? Because they're not as overconfident as men"

or reporting that:
"There's been a lot of academic research suggesting that men think they know what they're doing, even when they really don't know what they're doing"

the article aims to point out how men have become a victim of their hormonal and neurological impulses, which actually affects their overall performance.

Of course, women aren't literally better at everything. Men, of course, are better at submitting ;-)

And yet men are still in charge of almost everything, and will be for the foreseeable future.

Which is nice :)

Ha ha! I must have time warped into the 1950s or something!

Darling, stop watching MadMen and take a walk outside in the real world. It's not quite how you fantasize it to be.

I don't know. When men say that about women it seems like a sorry explanation for why someone would act like she does. To turn that around and say men are victims of their hormones seems just as flimsy........luci

NuevaVida -> RE: Why Women Are Better at Everything (7/31/2011 12:25:29 PM)

I always find these "women are better at..." and "men are better at..." arguments to be kind of silly.

Some people are better at some things than other people.

Some women are better at some things than other women.

Some women are better at some things than other men.

Some men are better at some things than other women.

Some men are better at some things than other men.

And of course, I'm better at everything than all of you.  [8D]  (heh heh)

Oh and I should add that the total collapse of many of the world's financial markets are a testimony being in charge does not equate to guaranteed optimal performance.

Good lord, you're right! The cabinet are almost all women, and there's a female president and UK Prime Minister and most of the big businesses in the world are run by women and so are the best banks and financial institutions and ...

Oh. Hang on. That's not right ...

Dream on sweetie :)

Never said it did.

Must be a bummer to think you could do better, but will never get the chance :)

So do I, actually. The title is provocative, as is this post (we know that provocative statements stimulate discussion). What is more interesting is the research that is explained in the article. It gives an interesting perspective.

While I agree that we cannot generalize, there are significant differences between men and women (as well as significant similarities). Research that analyses this is of interest to me.

Finance isn't my professional forte, so I make no such claims. You clearly have missed the point of my post.

Huh.  A very bright post.  Usually people who say that this group does everything better than "that" group either have "that" group envy, hate "that" group, are very insecure by "that" group or some other fucked up malfunction.

And sometimes they are being cheeky and provocative to stimulate discussion. ;-)

And i think that is wonderful.  i love a cheeky woman.  Cheeky men....not so much.  But...you never know on this board who is being cheeky and who is being..............something else.

DesFIP -> RE: Why Women Are Better at Everything (7/31/2011 12:36:34 PM)

1 % is hardly a huge difference.

Female police officers have an advantage because male perps feel emasculated being bested by another male (police officer) but don't feel as though they're in a competition with female police officers so they are less likely to fight back. And of course, if the female cop knows his first, middle and last names, then he'll be a pushover. Men are hard wired as far as I can tell to revert to childhood when a woman uses all three names.

True. And I've been away for a while, so not everyone is familiar with my style. ;-)

I think that:
- the [:D] that prefaces my post, and
- the fact that I underline that the title is provocative, and
- the fact that I end it by saying that I don't really think that women are better at everything then men(punctuated with a joke)

are indications of cheekiness.

That said, I do however find the research results interesting. I do wonder how many people read the article before posting here...

Whether it's reporting that research has shown that:
"women were more likely than men to make money in the market, mostly because they didn't take as many risks. And why are they risk-averse? Because they're not as overconfident as men"

Imo, it cuz women have more to lose. Women (in general) earn less, they get less benefits, etc than men, every dollar for a woman is hard fought and so they tend to look at their choices harder. Imo, for most women its dont lose what ya got as the first and most important rule. That is a generalization, some women like me are risktakers, although I try darn hard to only take calculated risks that are well in my favor. [:)]

NuevaVida -> RE: Why Women Are Better at Everything (7/31/2011 12:45:07 PM)

I read it.  And I found the "better at everything" in the article title to be quite the stretch from the conclusion that men take more risks due to over confidence and women don't take as many risks (but it didn't say due to UNDER-confidence, hmmm...).

But you're right - it stimulates discussion.  I just didn't see anything in the article that actually proved anything...other than perhaps the bias of the author?

PS:  I'm reeeeeally bad with money.  I take lots of risks.  It doesn't have anything to do with confidence, though.  It's more like "Oops, I didn't think about that."  Happens all the time. Ugh.

That's an interesting perspective and I would definitely consider that there is some truth in that hypothesis.

It didn't say that women didn't take risks. It reported that the research showed that women didn't take as many, most likely because they calculate them more.

Absolutely. Rule #1 of media: provoke. I alluded to that in my OP.

The article wasn't trying to prove anything. I was assembling different sources of research results to present a trend in research.
