CIA Agent Robert Baer has stated that Israel will attack Iran sometime this Fall. Apparently, Israel has been wanting to do this for some time now, but Robert Gates, who used his influence during the Bush and Obama administrations to thwart any potential attack, is now out. Now that he's gone, "there is a warning order inside the Pentagon to prepare for war."

Zerohedge is also reporting on an interesting development. From the article:

The punchline: "There is almost "near certainty" that Netanyahu is "planning an attack [on Iran] ... and it will probably be in September before the vote on a Palestinian state. And he's also hoping to draw the United States into the conflict..."

Here's the kicker... Nouriel Roubini (The world's most connected man in finance) tweeted this link. He generally doesn't comment on foreign relations outside of finance in public.

I could be completely wrong, but I have a hunch that there will be an Israeli attack sometime in September, and that the US will (somehow) be drawn into it.

It will be very difficult to get Obama to commit much to Israel's defense. He will publicly condemn an attack (he's got a Peace Prize to defend, lol) and only commit more than behind the scenes $$ should Israel appear unable to accomplish whatever their mission might be.

Really WIllbur, what planet are you on?

Launching an unprovoked, unnecessary and probably unsuccessful attack on a country thousands of kilometres away, with no means of attacking Israel, a country that has for the duration of the current regime never invaded any one else (unlike Israel), on dubious grounds is an act of defence?

Any Israeli attack on Iran (with or without US support) will be a belligerent aggressive act of war. It runs the risk of plunging the entire region into full scale war. And it's far from clear that Iran is pursuing nuclear weapons anyway.

It will deflect attention away from Israel's other aggressions, particularly it's ongoing colonisation and theft of the West Bank that is fast rendering a Two State solution impossible - Israel's real policy goal.

Careful now, Squealer. You know what happens every time you try and get out ahead of the talking points. You just aren't good with that stuff. After your fiasco with whether or not liberals support free speech, maybe you should go hit a remedial seminar or five.

Some of you might recall that I had posted about such a possibility earlier, with the recent retirements of Chief of Mossad Meir Dagan, Army Chief of Staff Gabi Ashkenazi, Chief of Shin Bet Yuval Diskin, and Amos Yadlin, director of military intelligence, all of whom had blocked attempts by Netanyahu and Barak to attack Iran.

Note that, from Netanyahu and Ehud Barak's perspectives, this might be considered a feasible tactic to try to counter the UN General Assembly vote on Palestinian statehood, since Iran would be expected to retaliate, using Hamas, Hizbollah, and its clients/vassals in Iraq, thus once again painting the Palestinians as violent terrorists.

The fact that this could draw the US into an engagement that it is not prepared for (despite the positioning of CVN77), block the Strait of Hormuz and result in a global recession is well, just collateral damage that Netanyahu and Barak are willing to live with.

We can hope that saner heads will prevail, but I am not optimistic.

Why don't you first define what you consider provocation, DG? And give us examples of the provocations that led to pre-emptive attacks on the Syrian nuclear plant (Operation Orchard) and the Iraqi Osirak reactor (Operation Babylon)?

Again, if Dagan, Askenazi, and Diskin were at their original posts, I would be fine with that reasoning. But now it's only Netanyahu and Barak with no one to rein them in. And Netanyahu has already demonstrated how much he "respects" Obama. Obviously, I hope this does not come to pass, but I am not confident.

The only way I can see this changing is if (a) definitive evidence of an Iranian nuclear weapons program emerges and (b) if Israel was under clear and immediate threat of attack from such weapons. Even if (a) turns out to be correct, unless Israel is under immediate threat, there is still no justification for an attack. Attacking another country just because it has weapons one side fears is completely unacceptable. The threat of attack has to be clear, credible, and imminent. All other alternatives must be exhausted first.

As Israel has been consistently predicting the imminent nuclear arming of Iran since 1992 at least, I would suggest that Israeli pronouncements on this issue be taken with a large pinch of salt. Their track record to date reads: 100% wrong.
