Some of you might recall that I had posted about such a possibility earlier, with the recent retirements of Chief of Mossad Meir Dagan, Army Chief of Staff Gabi Ashkenazi, Chief of Shin Bet Yuval Diskin, and Amos Yadlin, director of military intelligence, all of whom had blocked attempts by Netanyahu and Barak to attack Iran. Note that, from Netanyahu and Ehud Barak's perspectives, this might be considered a feasible tactic to try to counter the UN General Assembly vote on Palestinian statehood, since Iran would be expected to retaliate, using Hamas, Hizbollah, and its clients/vassals in Iraq, thus once again painting the Palestinians as violent terrorists. The fact that this could draw the US into an engagement that it is not prepared for (despite the positioning of CVN77), block the Strait of Hormuz and result in a global recession is well, just collateral damage that Netanyahu and Barak are willing to live with. We can hope that saner heads will prevail, but I am not optimistic.
