brightspot -> I am Soooooooo Pissed.... (5/19/2006 12:15:50 AM)

I can not believe how they are treating the alligators in Florida!

I just watched 'Inside Edition' and they (among several news outlets) are talking like something "Mysterious" is making the alligators crazy human killing machines.

They show footage of a huge alligator ducktaped from above the eyes all the way down it's snout, arms and legs ducktaped behind it's back, roped tied and being lifted into the back of a pick-up and it is flailing around and they continue to say how crazy it is behaving, WTF? I think any animal being treated as such would be a bit pissed off and struggle to get free, yet they blame the alligator for being out of control!

They act like it is "something mysterious" and everyone is so scared because the alligators are attacking humans and killing in some instances and everyone is freaked out and dumbfounded!

I don't claim to know the answers but it does seem pretty simple to me that when this behavior has been a very, very uncomman and just recently surfaced, why don't they investagate that it just may be possible that something has gone wrong with the allegators food supply????
I have not heard one freakin' news person ask this question, how damn ignorant can some people be to not look into or even think of this dynamic???
And the abuse of alligators for titillation continues!

I am just so pissed off at their stupidity and righteousness! They don't mention how phuckin' stupid people are to go down and sit next to the edge of a alligator infested pond!
And to not consider maybe something is killing off the food supply for the gators, like maybe a couple really bad hurricanes that could have dumped a bunch of toxic chit in the water!

Makes No Sense to me and I am totally astonished at how they are treating those gator's, like they are "mysterically inflicted" with some sort of cognitive defect that is all of a sudden causing them lash out and attack humans. I just don't get it!

Feeding the alligators might be a simple solution to the problem, but No, it makes much better news to get people in a frenzy and have them support cruelty to animals, makes me sick[:'(]!

I heard that it wasn't statistically interesting that this was happening, and even if the alligators have started to predate humans its probably because of human encroachment into the alligator's traditional spaces.

Yeah, it's amazing - dangerous animals might kill you if you invade their territories.

There's no other species on earth even capable of caretaking the earth's resources; and we, the one species that is marginally capable, are obviously doing a very bad job of it.

That sucks and should be outlawed and the people doing it sent to prison, and that applies to the Bush Administration too. [:'(]

Just curious. . .

How would you move an alligator?

I used to watch "Crocodille Hunter" and that sounds similar to the way Steve Irwin transported crocs and gators in the wild and at his zoo.  Considering his intentsity for conservationism and love of reptiles, it would be my guess that this is the safest way to move a croc or alligator. . . both for the reptile and the humans.  The talk about it "acting crazy" was likely to let the other members of the reptile relocation team keep aware of what it was doing so that it would not be dropped. . . also. . . injecting some humor keeps people from being too tense (think a surgery) and therefore less likely to make mistakes due to stress.  Moving those large reptiles can be a life or death situation.

Then again I have never been a big one on the anthropomorphic personification of animals either.

Oh stop it silly, everyone knows the correct procedure is to give them a cookie and politely ask them to get in the truck.

LOL

*cleans Diet Coke off the screen*

Do you know what happens if  you feed an alligator a cookie?

Unlike a mouse, he doesn't ask for a glass of milk. . .

he asks for a toasted human hand. . .

Well, I wasn't aware of that but I will get right on the manufacture of all of those "Got hand?" T-shirts so that no man eating alligators have to suffer the humiliation of not being up to date in the style department. I do know that duct tape, while it has a multitude of uses, is not the best answer for alligators though. Most alligators prefer intricate shibari rope bondage dresses. Hmmm...maybe I could make shibari rope bondage "Got Hand" dresses....but who would we get to put them on the alligators???

We taxpayers have to pay for prisoners. Why don't we just send them all to Florida and let the alligators eat them?

feastie -> RE: I am Soooooooo Pissed.... (5/19/2006 3:54:57 AM)

When I was a little girl, my father and his fishing buddy used to fish in a place called Phelan's Resevoir.  Mighty big bass in there, but mighty big gators too.  Dad and his friend started feeding this big ol' female gator soda crackers.  Now, I never realized that gators were fond of soda crackers, but there ya go.  Maybe it's the salt. [8D]  Big Mama got to where she recognized their boat and would follow them the whole day.  She'd become agitated when they ran out of crackers.  She'd start ramming the boat.  Considering it was just a small, aluminum bass boat, feeding her anything was probably a bubba thing to do.  Guess she was trying to dislodge any crackers they mighta saved for their lunch.

Point is, feeding them isn't the answer either.  Sounds to me like they're having a population explosion of gators down there and yes, human encroachment into their territory means that someone will be bitten or perhaps killed.  The hurricanes may well have broken their part of the food chain, but it could as easily be something else.

keme -> RE: I am Soooooooo Pissed.... (5/19/2006 5:07:23 AM)

*ponders* Having lived in Florida most of my life maybe it could be that most people are too stupid to know that ANY fresh water can OMG can it be??? be the home of an alligator... and mama alligators like to find quiet little places to have there babies nursery in because all the other gators LOVE baby gators... ok that said... if it is a small pond with say no real food resource... and mama is particularly tired after a day of sun bathing and some foolish dog, cat, human comes near her pond... is she A gonna ignore the delivery service and crawl how ever far to the nearest big water with food source... or B ring the bell and say chow time? humm you decide what you would do. Oh and duct tape doesn't harm them... where as 3 dead women in 2 weeks time will make any neighborhood a bit antsy.

slavebo -> RE: I am Soooooooo Pissed.... (5/19/2006 5:15:30 AM)

it is mating season for the gators here in florida and as a result they are much more aggressive.  however since the population of the gator is expanding, florida has extended the hunting by an additional 5 weeks to help eradicate the population.

florida must have the gator to maintain the balance of nature but signs are posted everywhere that instruts visitors not to feed the gator.

people just do not read or follow basic common sense.

Moloch -> RE: I am Soooooooo Pissed.... (5/19/2006 5:59:12 AM)

oh nooo call PETA!!!!
Look alligators in florida are like deer in NY, the are friggin pests!!! Except that deer ruin your car's because they stop in the middle of the road, alligators eat  your pets, your kids if you dont watch them or maybe even snack on you.
Brightspot I dont mean to be rude but I think that that alligator was treated very politley. Ever been to florida? Most likley if the alligator was annoying he would have eatten some buck shot, cuz you know its florida thats how they do it down there.
Look I dont mean to offend you but to Floridians an alligator is just a dangerous pest.

VikingHouse -> RE: I am Soooooooo Pissed.... (5/19/2006 6:19:02 AM)

That statement is so freakingly politicially incorrect that, I love it.. If those folks thik that the 'gators are bad they should try the croc' population around the Keys. Those bad boys don't think twice about running their dinner down in the water, on land or jumpin' to catch the skipper on an airboat. lol
I've lived in several locales where gators were a nusiance, but a beautifully creept one if you study them. When I lived in Beaumont, I still swear that, I saw a huge Croc while, I was fishing Sabine lake, but My bud's who were to drunk to have crawled back into the Hatteras if they had gone overboard kept insisting that it was just a large log, and their arguement continued despite the animals few swat at the water with its tail as it beat a retreat from the lead rain that, I threw at him after he attacked the divers platform.
It really is a shame to waste the human carcasses after they've been executed, maybe the Big Dawgs at Raeford can save some burial money by feeding the poor, hungry creatures.
And no, I don't want to debate capital punishment or proper disposal of murdering rapist.  The ones that destroy the innocence of the children should be spared the lethal injections and introduced to the crocs and gators only slightly medicated so that they can't outswim the animals or walk on water to escape their fates. weg

Kevin looks down at his alligator boots and is filled with guilt.  Hey, they were on sale, what can I say?
BTW, I'd rather be pissed off, then pissed on, but that's just me!
Watersports anyone?  winks, Kevin

Well, if you studied evolution at all, alligators have always "predated" humans.  Sometimes they prey upon us, though, and that needs to stop.

Phoenixandnika -> RE: I am Soooooooo Pissed.... (5/19/2006 6:39:27 AM)

If you choose to live in Florida  or visit you should expect to share space with gators.People and gators are forced to cross paths and this increases the risk. People need to be aware of behaviors, prescense, and how to avoid a conflict.

As someone else mentions gator mating season is now (mid April - May) during this time females are typically very aggressive.

I personally think that those who ingore safety precautions or simply become careless around gators get what they deserve. It is asking for trouble to feed gators, swim or even wade in waters where you know gators are. This also changes their behavior.Think about it if a gotor is feed by humans it will stop avoiding humans and approach them and possibly become agressive in search of food.

There are laws protecting gators and sometimes relocating them is not only what is best for the humans involved but for them. However, society must be protected as well. If a gator is a nuisance or dangerous it either has to be relocated or killed. Gators are not alone in that fact. Black Bears are often relocated and sometimes shot for these very same reasons are many other animals. The reailty is what you described is a humane and safe way to relocate gators. It may not look pretty to you but neither is the idea of a gator attack.

predation is the term that they were looking for I believe.

the predation upon humans by alligators
