it wasnt the fact she called ME a welfare mom... Daddy and i have had to be on it before...

The point was she would even make such a comment... It blew me away!

It makes people who need assistance and who are working like mad to provide for their families feel a bit like they are not doing good enough.

Guess i was just wondering if maybe there was a reason that people had such a bad view of those of us who are below the poverty level. Maybe my age makes me a bit naive in this matter....

Or maybe my meds just fuddle my head so badly the rasons are not registering....

Either way it still makes me wonder how she treated othher patients...

I'm with those who think she acted in a very unprofessional manner, her job is not to pass judgement on your income, your marital state, etc. but to assist that things go smoothly. She's possibly frustrated and underpaid herself and saw you as an easy target to vent her frustrations.

No, sorry, a receptionist with any ounce of professionalism and maturity does not turn to anyone and say "Another welfare mom". They quietly state the name of the insurance carrier in a professional manner without any other comments or even voice inflections that may imply anything other than, "We are happy to accept your insurance, no matter what it is".

Also, it is the receptionist's responsibility to make everyone that comes into that waiting room feel welcome and at ease. The receptionist is the initial face and voice of the whole practice, she (or he) makes the first impression for the doctor the patient is going to see, and a good one is worth her weight in gold.

At the very minimum, the one in question here should have been written up and given a warning, as well as a period of "re-training". If this was any more than the first complaint about her, then she needs to be bounced out on her ass.

Usually, the hospitals, doctors' offices, etc. fall all over themselves to correct the situation and make sure it does not happen again. If HIPAA does receive a complaint, they do investigate, and if an organization is found to have made a violation, and did nothing to remedy the situation, then they can be hit with MASSIVE fines, could be in the hundreds of thousands of dollars, and/or they can lose their Medicare credentials, which means a massive loss of income. The penalties for HIPAA violation are pretty severe.

I don't think it needs to be an actual lawsuit, but you absolutely can file complaints. Usually, it's enough to just complain to a supervisor or manager, because they do scramble to avoid the wrath of HIPAA, and I do know of people who have been dismissed on the spot for violations.

unfortunately since i am on narcotic medications it puts me in the drug contract program.... To switch docs would take months and thats if i find a doc to take me... On a waiting list for a doc in Iowa City which is 2 hours away....

You know what, though, shorty? If you honestly feel that your neuro doc isn't competent, than do what you have to do to find a good one, because your neuro system isn't something you want to mess around with! Once nerves are damaged, they're damaged for good. If it takes you a couple months of paperwork and 2 hour drives to get the help you need, then do it!

I had a degenerative back problem with cord compression and the whole nine yards, too. I found a good neurosurgeon, he rebuilt my back, and, five years later, I'm picking up and carrying grandkids, climbing 17 foot ladders to paint stairwells, doing Zumba dancing.....he gave me my life back. Do what you have to do, it's worth it!

This has not been my experience here. I've been referred to dr's until I finally got a good diagnosis & I'm being treated appropriately. I've not had a problem with anyone turning me away. All I have right now is Medicare & I've applied for Medical assistance & food stamps. I wouldn't take kindly to not being allowed to see a dr who could treat me correctly. But that's just me. I'm a skeey bitch, after all.....

HIPPA actually only protects medical records and medical information about a patient. It is only with the PT's permission that medical records can be released, or a court order. Unfortunately, it really doesn't protect folks from comments like the one the receptionist made; she can always say it's just her opinion (stupidity). It is very specific about what can and can't be released. It's also the reason why when you are trying to find someone and start calling hospitals, they don't tell you if the person is even there sometimes. Heck even the cops can't get information prior to arriving at the ER.....I've called for information, basic info that could affect the outcome of handling a crime scene or crash, and have been told they can't tell me a thing. Depending on which hospital in what area if the country I'm in, they will at least tell me if the person is still breathing. Literally....I've actually begged them to tell me if the victim is still breathing......about half the time, I'll at least get an answer to that.

But to the OP, I was just recently on food stamps, and got assistance with my rent when I was let go from my job. I'm barely making ends meet now, and I'm working too! In this economy, having a job doesn't mean that you're rolling in dough. I had to ask for help just to make my rent...forget groceries! I'm headed to the pet food bank this Saturday to get food for my beebees there. I'm reactivating my food stamp request......but even before, I was getting a lousy $25 a month in food stamps. WTF???? How am I supposed to eat with that? I never did get a satisfactory explanation. I'm making less than HALF of what I was making at my other job.

I think the stigmas comes from the welfare system as it was (ab)used 20-30 years ago. Then women popped out kids for the money, the system was set up to increase with every child born. There weren't any checks or balances on the system back then......healthy, capable people were on welfare, and didn't have to do anything to keep it. I know of the mother of a classmate who popped out 10 kids, and she said it was strictly for the money. She didn't work at all, and they lived high on the hog......they had new clothes, all the latest gadgets, eating steak and lobster with the food stamps.....why should she have gotten a job? She'd make a whole lot less!

I'm with Holly....you showed a great deal more restriaint than I did.....I'dve called the supervisor out to the waiting area immediately and demanded an apology and immediate action taken. But I'm a heartless bitch like that.....you just know if she made that comment then, she's done it for a long time.

well that went horrid! After being placated for an hour they tell us they see no fault in just verbally reprimanding her. Daddy told the doc to take his crappy care and shove... Well... It just gets ugly from there. So now i will be seen by referral (sp? Drugs yanno) at a PTC specialist. funny stuff happens when you have a lawyer on speed dial.

On the lawyer subject. He will be looking through my records to see if i received a poor level of care. Daddy and i both know a shunt should have been placed MONTHS ago but thats another rant.. er.. i mean post..

Actually, if a receptionist says anything that can be overheard by someone not involved that reveals personal information, that is the same as breaching confidentiality. That's why most registration desks have the little booths or partitions, for privacy. It can be as simple as saying to your neighbor, "Congratulations, I hear you're going to be a grandmother." If it's information that you obtained from the office, it's confidential and you just made a major HIPAA violation. The mother-to-be may not have wanted the grandmother-to-be to know that yet. Revealing that someone was in the office at all is breach of confidentiality, they have the right to privacy, and maybe they don't want any of their family to know they are seeing a doctor. Two nurses can't sit at lunch in a crowded cafeteria and discuss a case because they might be overheard by someone who knows their patient. You can't throw anything into the trash that has any type of identifying information on it. It has to be shredded. The last company I worked at, you couldn't even look up your OWN test results in the computer. Employees that got caught were dismissed on the spot and escorted out the door. HIPAA is a big deal.

In the early HIPAA days, they made a stink about the sign-in sheets at the main desks, because anyone could walk in and see your name there. We had to make people sign in on stickers and then put the stickers on a clipboard we kept behind the desk. They must have found a loophole around that, because sign-in sheets are still used everywhere I go.

If anyone was within earshot who heard her say "welfare mom", that could be considered a breach of confidentiality, since it reveals, or at least alludes to the patient's insurance coverage and income level.
