It's actually Middle English (by way of anglo saxon), and wasn't originally seen as being as beastly a word as it is now: thus the twat joke in Twelfth Night. (The n was added a lot later.) Freebounds derivation sounds good, but is (as has been pointed out already) utter bullshit.
