I didn't say anything about that fellow did I?
You really are a closed-minded git.

if you would care to provide the evidence... cross referenced if posible, and validated at source, I might be able to take that point to heart... however...

I would be quite surprised if there were kids around the mob.

The youngest of those arrested was 11, apparently - for shoplifting.

AlwaysLisa -> RE: roiting in croydon and penge (8/9/2011 1:27:29 PM)

The way I read it, (and Im not there, so this could be really askew), was that alot of the looting and rioting was being fed by cellphones, twitter, etc...building the mob and encouraging people who probably have no clue what started this mess, to steal and destroy.   Once the adrenaline kicks in, it's anyone's ball game.   It may have began with a shooting, some political outcry...but I think it has evolved into a free for all.   I also read they are trying to get BlackBerry to shut down over there, to prevent further growth in numbers, and that the police force will be tripled tonight.

Someone was said, a person can be an intelligent creature, but people, are dumb, panicky creatures who follow the loudest voice.  I will have to find that quote.   My best wishes to anyone living through this, hopefully any further loss can be averted.

Arpig -> RE: roiting in croydon and penge (8/9/2011 1:28:30 PM)

No I wouldn't care to. I only expend effort on behalf of entities that are at least semi-intelligent. You don't qualify.

I didn't communicate clearly - I should have said "politically driven" or "politically induced".  It's all over the first two pages of this thread, and then some.  But it's interesting to me that you chose to only comment on one word in my post.

LadyConstanze -> RE: roiting in croydon and penge (8/9/2011 1:34:43 PM)

My understanding is that they are getting Blackberry to release the records of texting and twittering, so they can get a few of the people who got others to join into the looting and bring them to justice

This is actually a good point.  I am sure different people in the mob have different motivations.  Some are taking the position that the shooting was a catalyst.  Personally, I believe it was more of an excuse, but whatever.  I think almost all of us, but not everyone, can agree that it has degenerated into thuggery and not much else, regardless of motivation.

But have it your way.  You've convinced me.  Stealing jeans from the Gap is a political statement. And Vaguely, glad to know you have a better class of thugs in the UK. That made me laugh, and frankly, doesn't surprise me. That accent always makes people sound smarter than they really are.

You'd sound a lot smarter yourself if you didn't seem to be convinced that every person in the riots is causing trouble for the same reasons. Politically motivated thugs/angry black people with a beef against the Met and looters after a free iPhone can quite happily exist in the same mob. The fact that a few posters here are taking it for granted this an either/or thing and you can't have both groups in the same barney is a bit depressing, really.

Awesome.

Fair enough, that I'll accept. Thanks.

And I only commented on that bit, because I didn't disagree with the rest in any substantial way. While the Rodney King riots are not directly comparable, the are an adequate analogy, and from what I know of them, you summarized them well.

During the Rodney King riots, there were people who didn't give a shit one way or another about what was going on, other than they suddenly had an opportunity for free stuff, so they happily (laughing, back patting, etc.) tore through stores and took what they wanted. One of them was laughing at how much money he'd make selling it.  No anger there, just fun and opportunity.

I can't say if it's the original origin, but roughly, the quote is often attributed to the movie "Men In Black".

Arpig -> RE: roiting in croydon and penge (8/9/2011 1:41:34 PM)

You may be semi sweet, but you don't qualify either.

It's what I know. I was there, then I left, and I had friends whose family were beaten to death while trying to protect their shop.  I am not in the UK and not directly affected.  But I'm smart enough to know that not everybody loots out of anger or political contempt.  Since political anarchy seems to be the main discussion here, it seemed appropriate to bring up that there are equally weighted different reasons for chaos, as well.

This whole thread began because someone who actually lives there was scared and sad and concerned about what's happening.  Then it blew into some sort of justification for anarchy.

Hey a thought further - you're only posting in disagreement on this thread?  What up with that?
