People who are already suffering are going to suffer more as a result of this.  What a waste. I truly hope this ends soon.

HeatherMcLeather -> RE: My thoughts are with the British tonight (8/9/2011 1:18:14 PM)

I'm really sorry. I hope it ends soon.

Not affected by it (and unlikely to be), though I do frequently work in an area near to one of the problem areas. Been talking about joining the clear up efforts with a friend. If anyone hears of any group or organisation that has this idea..please do post on here.

Thanks.

Some meetings in London were cancelled, oddly enough mainly by the non-British participants who are under the assumption that the whole of London is a big riot zone and it's dangerous...

As for cleanup, I would contact the council, they will know of charities and groups who help.

Politesub53 -> RE: My thoughts are with the British tonight (8/9/2011 4:36:05 PM)

Thanks for the support expressed on this thread.

Whats happening is exceptional, even in London where we are used to riots. Considering the amount of damage there have been few injuries so far.

Iamsemisweet -> RE: My thoughts are with the British tonight (8/9/2011 4:38:37 PM)

I just read in my local newspaper that a 26 year old had been killed.  It was a little short on details of how or who the killer was.
Any thought on whether martial law will be declared?

They were rounding up looters they'd identified off the CCTV earlier.

I will try and confirm this but I lived in the same area before I moved to the coast. I have been told by family in the area that it seems three looters in a car had a row, one of them shot another.

As I say, I cant confirm that as yet.

That was a joke right? Look, it is unpleasant and horrible but nothing that really does require martial law, though the looters should be treated according to it. They're bringing dogs in, oddly enough the thugs don't want to deal with sharp teeth.

One thing you gotta understand, those incidents - as shocking as they are - are possibly a lot less worse than the crimes happening in LA on a daily basis. It's not that the whole country is hiding and is afraid or that it's even close to civil war or anarchists taking over.

One thing I do hope they will do is that they introduce a new law, that masking yourself will be illegal - why would anybody hide the face if they do not do something wrong or plan to commit a crime?

Yes indeed Lady C. One never knows what those masked women will get up to next. [8D]

It wasn't a joke, it was a serious question.  And you answered it, politely and informatively.  I appreciate that, it doesn't happen every day on these forums.

Well, I can hide my face for privacy reasons behind a cuppa ;)

I can tell you, I don't plan to take part in any looting or wear the mask when going out on the street.

It's a cultural thing I guess, our friend got injured because he was in Manchester when it kicked off and couldn't get away, public transportation shut down, he called, my other half went to pick him up, the car is a bit scratched up as they were throwing things on anything that moved, bummer as it's 2 months old but it's a freaking car and not a living thing.

It's shocking, true, but it's really really far away from anything that would require martial law, thankfully. The combined UK problems possibly wouldn't register on the scale of the LA riots but would just be a blip.

Iamsemisweet -> RE: My thoughts are with the British tonight (8/9/2011 5:28:05 PM)

The reason that I thought that martial law might be a possibility is because I read that parliament was recalled.  I didn't understand why this was done, if this still was being handled on the local police level.  The article I read didn't really provide an explanation.

pahunkboy -> RE: My thoughts are with the British tonight (8/9/2011 5:35:14 PM)

The Brits are savages cause they burned down the white house- and London has CCTV, and besides the Queen will be mad.

Oh that is easy, they are on a summer break, vacation - so they were being recalled, even Cam had to cut his holiday short, that's really all that it is.

Anaxagoras -> RE: My thoughts are with the British tonight (8/9/2011 6:25:54 PM)

I want to also express my sympathy despite what I said on another thread! I lived near Croydon for a short while when I was studying in London. I was going to comment about the sheer nihilistic senselessness and thuggishness of it all on one of the other more topically appropriate UK riot threads but there is too much to read through with the time.
