But to do what?
The only thing I can relate it to is Congress.  Let's say there was major rioting in a US city, say Chicago.  Congress has no police powers, that is a function of the executive branch or the local jurisdictions.  So recalling Congress would serve no purpose.  Is Parliament different?  My understanding is that this matter is under the jurisdiction of the local police forces.
I really am not being confrontational, I just can't imagine why they were recalled unless martial law was being considered.  Window dressing and hand wringing, perhaps?

The reason that I thought that martial law might be a possibility is because I read that parliament was recalled.  I didn't understand why this was done, if this still was being handled on the local police level.  The article I read didn't really provide an explanation.

Oh that is easy, they are on a summer break, vacation - so they were being recalled, even Cam had to cut his holiday short, that's really all that it is.

All power resides in parliament. The powers are not separated as in America.

To all within the realm of England, I extend  my wishes of safety. I pray to my Goddess that she keep all from harm, and that she bring calm once again to the cities of your land.

Be at peace
Aneka.

I love The British Isles and Brits in general [and a few literally and in particular!], and their forebearers made my country what it is today.
Rain is coming which may quell the chaos, and may all the innocents, police and emergency workers come home safely and soundly.

Well, decisions have to be made, the Parliament is slightly different than Congress, so that's why they are being recalled. The PM has to give direction, the police is guided by the Parliament, it's a crisis and all decision makers have to interrupt their vacation.

Imagine it like a big company, the whole board of directors are taking their summer break and then there are a couple of crisises, the employees need direction on how to handle it - they interrupt their vacation and come back.

Maybe the links will help?

Since they head government departments, they have to be there if there is a crisis, because the government departments need to be able to react and somebody has to make decisions.

Only the dedicated will persist in inclement weather.....fewer faces, easier to get nabbed.

I wonder how many parents were watching the footage and spotted their children. Mine would come home to a locked door and a smack around the ear.

Have you seen the footage of the mother picking up the kids with the car and they load a few flat screens in the back and she drives calmly off (blissfully unaware of the CCTV), gives you an idea what values they grew up with. Or maybe their kids have so much pocket money that she thought they just bought them?

Thank you for the explanation.  Sounds like they have their work cut out for them.

My take on bad airs starts on toxic pgs 18~19.

I will echo my sympathies for those affected in this thread.

It seems a good idea to seperate the human and political aspects in two threads.

Turn the question around.

Why on Earth would parliament remain on vacation while putting 16.000 police officers into the streets of the capital city?

Iamsemisweet -> RE: My thoughts are with the British tonight (8/10/2011 2:50:10 PM)

I misunderstood the role of parliament, and I have since educated myself.  I was comparing them to closely to the US Congress.  My mistake, I did not know enough about the UK's form of government.

I will say that if something similar happened in the US, and Congress was called, I would assume they were doing so because martial law was being considered.  But then, I am really, really paranoid.

I think we are far more pragmatic in Europe and martial law just seems like an outrageous idea to us, that would be close to a civil war. What it is is some scum being out of control, hiding in a mob and doing things they wouldn't dare to do on their own but they feel they can get away with it in a large crowd. They learn they don't now, the people are identifying them to the police, in a way this is not a bad thing because it shows that people are banding together, it's not "the youth" it's a part of them, not all youngsters are like that.

Come on, disturbing the vacation of politicians, if that's as bad as it gets, not such a big deal!

Ok... so I see some people went against the thread guidelines and starting talking about who, what, where, when, why.

Thank you to those who stuck to the spirit of the thread and shared your support.
