Over the years, I've noticed a few things about the way people use the Hide function, and thought I'd put down my ideas on it, and see what others think.

1. Hide in general.
Personally, I have nobody on Hide (or if I do I've forgotten about it and they are no longer posting). I find the whole idea of Hiding somebody's posts distasteful, I do not avoid ideas and opinions I disagree with. It seems cowardly to me.

2. Announcing it.
This is silliness in the extreme. "I'm putting you on hide!", or "I have so-and-so on hide". As if it is some sort of punishment. Why do some people feel the need to announce to everybody that they are Hiding someone? Myself, I think it's an attempt to shame the person, to let everybody know that you find them so distasteful that you can't bear to see their posts. To me, it makes the announcer look childish and petty.

3. Unhide/Rehide
This is related to #2. I have noticed some people saying "I have you on hide, but decided to unhide you to see what you said" Then they respond (usually quite negatively), and then announce that they are re-hiding the person. The intent is obviously to let everybody know you think the person isn't worth reading, yet for some reason you feel the need to read and reply. Then you follow it up by announcing that whatever reply they may make will be ignored. It is akin to sending a nasty cmail to somebody and then blocking them so they cannot reply, but doing so publicly in order to put down the hidden poster. This is simply cowardly.

Thoughts?

I only have one person on hide and it just happened within the last few days.
He had a disgusting avatar showing someone covered in shit. I had no desire to see it.
Other than that, I skip over anything that I don't want to read for a number of reasons.
I'm kinda adult like that.

Oh yeah, him.
I think he changed the avatar, but that would be a good reason in my mind.

I don't currently have anyone nor have I ever had anyone on hide but have come close to putting someone on hide simply because reading the person's posts are difficult for me to read due to the way he/she writes to the point I can't make sense of the writing.

I would not announce it or tell the person. What would be the sense? I wouldn't unhide them either unless they were no longer a member of c.com and I was cleaning up my profile like I do from time to time on here.

The only reason I haven't hidden the person is because they are basically newish and to be honest many of the newish people come and go so quickly it's just not worth the time or bother.

#1....agreed with totally.
#2 and #3 also seem right on the mark. It seems to me that SOME people might use it as a way to publicly disenfranchise another user. "You and your opinon don't even matter and are unworthy of being viewed or considered."

Like Aileen, I have "hidden" someone before because I hated viewing their avatar. But I would never announce that to the rest of the boards. And like Sanity said, it is just easier to ignore the text mentally.

I have a few folks on hide, no biggie.....hiding their wordy, overblown posts makes it easier to skim the threads.  Besides.....I'm too tempted to post back, and that got me in trouble once before.  A little spank, but one none the less.  Didn't matter that the response was probably appropriate for the poster either.  And there are a few that, like wonder noted, their writing is so convoluted, that it's just too difficult to read or make sense of.  I realize that there are many foreign folk here, but I can tell the difference between English as a second language, and someone who can speak it, but can't write it.

That said, you have to really be obnoxious for me to hide you......most of the stuff I read here is too funny to hide!

The shit avatar was changed.

In the past I've hidden people whose posts irritated me. I felt their main purpose here was to have fun ridiculing and sometimes very offensively putting down others. I'm more of a Kumbaya kinda girl and prefer to put good, not bad, out there in the world, plus I come here to relax and unwind, and those posts disrupted that for me.

Now I just bypass the bullshit for the most part, or I find that human dynamic to be fascinating in the big scheme of things. So I don't have anyone hidden. Sometimes even the negative folks provide insight for me to consider, namely why I might feel disturbed by their words.

I've never felt a need to announce hiding or unhiding. Years ago someone announced that he had hidden me and I found that to be totally weird, like he wanted me to be offended by it or something. I was not.

A long time ago, somebody posted that if i didn't do something differently they were going to hide me. I can't recall who or the details, it was down in P&R so it likely wasn't of any importance, but I laughed...oh God did I laugh.

There was a poster who regularly went to the Mistress forum to tell us all what we are doing wrong, how we need to change, how horrible we are, blah blah blah

I used to get really annoyed until the other women told me they got him on hide as it's the same thing over and over again and he just wants to get a rise out of women, so clicked him too, life was so much more pleasant. I think I got some people on hide, usually if they're just freaking annoying and not amusing, I figure instead of accidentally reading something and thinking "What an idiot, gosh, who stole his/her brain", the hide function can be good, fun is not telling them so they keep on trying to get a rise and it's just not going anywhere.

Some people are annoying but faintly amusing, so I kinda semi ignore, others are just plain douches, if they're plain douches and I can't even laugh about how idiotic they are, then I just hide because they kinda remind me of those annoying noisy horns and noise makers kids often have and reading them would be the equivalent of letting a toddler throwing a fit interrupting the conversation.

I have read your post Arpy (hope you don't mind me calling you that for short), and absolutely nothing else. As such I have decided to respond with my own opinion which shall be yours to peruse and which to respond if you choose (see you CAN be poetic if you are pathetic).

Now, we participate as writers in a forum which can be seen by anyone on the internet. Period. Maybe a couple of provinces in China or Afghanistan don't get it but the rest of the world does. Now when you ignore someone what you do is to let them express themselves TO THE REST OF THE WORLD, without your knowledge. Without you being notified that you need to rebut their position.

Even if they are fucking crazy (it happens), they could just go on and have many things against the sane people, and if you have them blocked you will never know, and therefore never respond.

Go for it, EVERYONE. Ignore everyone you don't like. Then you let them have their say and then you say nothing. At least the forum is a bit calmer that way, but people who are offended by words are not my type. So they can silence me and I will be happy as can be. And they will not know how I have torn their posts to fucking shreds and they said absolutely nothing in rebuttal. But the they are there for the entire world to see.

Yup.

Now I go read the rest of this. As if it matters..........

The Hatchet of the Mods.

(kinda like the chariot of the gods)

There have been plenty better threads killed over the years. Just wait til someone reallly gets out of line, and it will happen.

On the other side, I have quite a few random hides due to really icky profile pics.
I don't know any of them, and would not announce my actions even if I did.

Here in the forum, I only have one on hide, and it's due again to an icky avatar.
I'm pretty good at tuning out posts, but this avatar is like in your face!

I love the hide function. Much easier to skim on past the few people whose posts I want to ignore. I doubt they know they're hidden, why would I announce it and why would they care? I do it for my own convenience, not to affect them.

I used to never hide anyone, and might have even expressed similar views, prior to my conversion, Arpig.  I still only use it sparingly, but I've found it to be a useful tool, if only for cleaning up threads where one tangent is of interest, and another is very long qouted posts between a pair of fools..  It turns off, as easily as it turns on.

For hide in general, as you put it, not only would someone have to be entirely and 100% predictably toxic or stupid, they would need to be devoid of any humor as well.  Make me laugh, just once in while, and I'll let an awful lot slide.  Even in the worst case, I'm an optimist.

Announcing?  Sometimes it's a simple courtesy.  If I'm in the habit of engaging in ... more primal ... sorts of discussions with some posters, and prefer to have a break from that on a particular thread, or for a break, it seems only decent to let him know that he doesn't need to waste his time trying to inflame a further response.
