Fabric on walls/accent wall ideas - 8/13/2011 3:54:19 PM

So i am in this big redo the apartment.    I have moved onto my living room and want to do something otehr than just paint it or wallpaper it, and i also have to be able to quickly make it "neutral" when i leave.

So i was thinking a couple things, i.e., putting metallic striping of the same color on an accent wall behind my couch or color washing the accent wall, or my latest idea is striping the accent walls with fabric.

I have seen a couple ideas with this -- one is using only starch they said this is good for rentals as in the end, you can peel it off and it won't damage the paint underneath or use wallpaper stuff to put it up, which would require removing it as you do wallpaper.

Has anyone done this?  Any other cool ideas to do with an accent wall in a small living room -- 10x12?

angel

Why not just use something like a large chinese screen or something similar that you can fold up and take with you.  I discourage anyone from putting too much time in modifying a rental unless you are operating in conjunction with the landlord and getting a rent abatement.

I don't know about putting fabric on walls, it would be really hard to keep clean, wouldn't it?

Better still...invest some real money and buy a persian rug with a lot of silk in it and just hang it length wise.  You will have the rug for years and years.

In my less sober days I hung fabric strips ceiling to floor from a thin rod. A fan blowing them around was pretty interesting. If youre more techno/industrial then metallic fabric or very lightweight aluminum strips with LED floor lights in different colors reflecting off them. A gutter fabricator probably would cut you a bunch of them cheap.

I don't mind putting the time in, it's been exhausting but fun.  I just need ideas or suggestions as to interesting thing to do with the accent wall.

Because fabric will stretch, bubble, warp and wrinkle - I think a better option would be to make wooden frames  or panels and stretch your fabric over it - the way one would make a canvas to paint on.  You can use different contrasting/complimenting colors and patterns without having to worry about permanence or damage to the wall.  Fabric panels/canvas adds depth and texture as well as color. Here is a link to some pictures of what is possible - it can be done fairly inexpensively although fabric CAN get rather expensive at times.

You can do that but you need to back it with styrofoam or something similar.  I don't know how small the room is but it will take away a an inch or a little more.

According to the research i have done, you wash it with a little bit of dish soap and water.    I haven't come across any negative comments about hanging fabric and it being hard to keep clean.  grins and willbeyourdaddy, i don't want it blowing around lol but to adhere it to the wall.  I won't even talk about what we decorated our rooms at college lol.

I am looking for the accent walls at striping the walls with fabric or color washing or the metalic overlay striping.  I want to do something like that not really just cover the wall with something hanging.

I once used a staple gun to put up my Laura Ashley wallpaper in my foyer.
Easy to put up, and soooo much easier to take down. And barely noticable!
They come in a variety of dimensions, and cause less damage than nails.
I'm certain this would work for fabric as well. You can even dress it up more
by using some of those small but oh so pretty upholstery nails.

WinsomeDefiance,

my mom is thinking along those lines also.  She can make something beautiful out of nothing she is so creative.  I have to paint no matter what, i just wanted to do something interesting with the accent wall behind the couch.

I haven't heard about the fabric doing that but then again, it's why i asked lol if people have experience with it.  Thanks for suggesting it, i will look into that happening.

You've mentioned "accent walls" several times, what is that?

Zephyr, An accent wall is usually when a room has a wall that is different than the others and it becomes a focal in the room so to speak As my mom says it gives an accent to the room because it's different.  For example, my bedroom has three walls painted one light color and the accent wall which my bed's headboard is against is a very dark color of the color on the other three walls.  It's an interesting effect becuase my three mirrored dresser is on the far wall across from the bed so it reflects the dark wall while being surrounded with the lighter wall.  Now i just have to find wall decorations lol.

I am making the wall behind my couch the one that is going to be different as it gives me the most visible wall to work with so i can do something with it lol.

If you want striping, buy some inexpensive wood trim and use it to stretch your fabric over.

You could also use a panel of lattice, taking it apart and using each strip separately, because its usually thinner than most wood trim.  Think how amazing it would look if you wove it back together.

Oh man, you are making me miss my days of playing designer :)

laughs, you sound like my mom, she has these visions and being the non-decorating woman i am -- though i don't do bad on the accessories --- i can't vision what she sees.

Zephyr, i do what i can.  My mom is saying the same thing --  they just built  the house 5 years ago and now they have finally finished the basement and she is wanting to gut their bathroom, put woodfloors in ALL the rooms and repaint her bedroom.  Last i heard she wants to change the landscaping too but i change the subject when she starts talking about it lol

Shge said it's all because i had her help me figure out my place lol.  My dad isn't speaking to me

Sounds like she's addicted to reno, I think there's a self-help group for that lol. The difference is that I probably won't do anything about it. Don't suppose she'd like to work on my place for a while, huh.

...nah didn't think so
