there are always loop holes and ways to work around certain circumstances.  You mentioned that you had X amount of credit to finish to graduate.  To get to that point with a certain math level there has to be various reasons.  Those reasons I would think would serve the same purpose in "excusing" you from one or more portions of the test.

No idea whatever reasons yours could be or anyone else's.  Just putting the info out there for whoever could want it or need it.

taken from the California Department of Education's site (with link to statement):
"Yes. If an examinee has a specific learning disability, an emotional disability, an attention deficit disorder, or a physical disability, accommodations are available."

That might be my only saving grace

Unfortunately, most of the posters here are correct...without a GED it's hard to get and find work.  This is something I tell my son every day.  The good news is that you should be able to get tutoring for free at your local library.  I used to volunteer for English as a Second Language program.  It was free of charge to anyone who enrolled.  Talk to your local librarian.  If she can't help, call the school district.  There must be some adult education classes where you live.

FelinePersuasion -> RE: no GED sorry no work (5/20/2006 1:58:06 AM)

yes there are. The GED class starts at 8 am and goes till 3. I'm was under the assumption however that ged was something you picked up and studied your ass off on your own for and then went in haha.

There's some courses I could do that way.

bandit25 -> RE: no GED sorry no work (5/20/2006 2:59:38 AM)

Nope, don't even try to do it alone.  We're here to help...I love volunteering

MsIncognito -> RE: no GED sorry no work (5/20/2006 4:53:00 AM)

There are plenty of options for helping you bring your skills up so you can pass the GED. There are correspondence and online courses, as you mentioned, plus there are  usually adult literacy organization (which also deal with numeracy) which offer  free tutoring and upgrading for people like yourself.  If you let them know that your goal is to get your GED (or equivalent if one exists where you are) they will gear your learning towards what you need to know to get your GED. Don't make excuses, look into your options and do it.

I was wondering how come places that are basically grunt work jobs require GED's. Do lack of GED's really make your work abilitie less on a logical scale?

Wouldn't someone still be able to come to work and bust their ass at work regardless? How does aGED make you any more qualified to do hard labor in the case of some jobs.  I don't see how a ged makes you more able to unbox groceries or load warehouses, or any of the pychical labor some jobs require

FelinePersuasion,

I don't believe that migrant farm workers are required to have a high school education or it's GED equivalent.

There is a project in India called "The Barefoot University" where people with little education have an opportunity to  be trained in all things technical.

It is a proven fact that many of us have the ability to learn, regardless of educational opportunities.

Solution to math difficulties:  Hire a tutor!

Arpig -> RE: no GED sorry no work (5/20/2006 8:00:36 AM)

As somebody mentioned, there are specific allowances made for those with disabilities, and given that your math skills are so poor, I would be inclined to say there may be some reason for that. I would look into that if I were you.

PS. Another possibility would be just to say you did have a GED....its highly unlikely that they will try track down your old alma mater to check, especially if it is far away..."GED...well I graduated high school in East Nowheresville Kentucky..."

darq -> RE: no GED sorry no work (5/20/2006 8:19:26 AM)

I don't have a GED or a diploma ... This is something I NEVER EVER TELL EMPLOYERS!

I was homeschooled through high school .. The group I was part of was so tiny that I was the only high school student they had. There was no diploma but because I did both high school and college courses, it wasn't necessary. All that was required was that the cover group keep the records for me or give the records to me after 7 years.

Well, I left home and did my thing ... And during that time, the cover group shut down. All the other children simply tested back into public school, private school or fell under other cover groups. All the records were disposed of, including mine. Therefore there is not actual phsyical record of me ever having gotten past the 7th grade.

The thing is, I dont tell employers this. I note that I've completed high school (which I did) and during the interview I present myself as the educated, eager to learn, eager to work young woman that I am. When they ask about high school, I tell them about home schooling and how I had to be self disciplined in order to finish 5 years of education pretty much without the aid of a teacher. (I had a tutor for math.)

Never EVER EVER do I mention the loss of the records or my lack of diploma. I've never been asked to show it to anyone ... Even now when I'm taking medical coding courses, I've never been asked to furnish a diploma. When it asks about my high school, I simply tell them I attended Antioch Christian Homeschool Academy from 8th - 12th grade;  I studied college prep courses and advanced literature and journalism. I also volunteered for two years at the Northwest Animal Hospitial in Hazel Green, Alabama which granted me 4 extra credits in animal science.

Its all in how you present yourself. If you present yourself as having mediocre math skills, as a person who listened to others when they told you werent capable of doing something, as a person who isn't willing to do whatever it takes to accomplish your goals, that is how you will be judged, regardless of your reputation. However, if you go in with your head high and present yourself as the kind of person who will put her all into the task at hand and don't mention the things you lack, it really doesn't matter. What matters is your personal drive.

After I finish my medical coding courses and get my certification, I plan to work in an office or at home and start taking the courses to become a certified vet tech. Or maybe I'll get a PELL grant and go to college to become a vet tech. Either way, I refuse to allow a piece of paper (or lack thereof) to stand between me and my goals. You can do it ... I mean, me, I only have 6th grade math skills ... I just don't ever make a big deal over it. I don't mention it. I don't point out my faults ...

For example, I also have memory problems. My short term memory is horrible. Instead of telling an employer about that though, I discipline myself by writing little notes for myself and keeping track of things that way. If I were tell an employer about my memory problems, my lack of diploma, my poor math skills I'd never get hired anywhere ... I'd never be able to do anything. I wouldn't be taking these medical coding courses right now. People would think of me as the kind of person who just gives up in the face of adversity.

If I can do it, you can do it. Just don't give up ... Think about how you present yourself to others ... Make efforts to present yourself as a friendly, hardworking person who is dependable and eager to learn. If you have to fudge a little, just make sure you don't say something unbelievable like ... Don't brag about a degree you don't have. If you lie, you will get caught and that looks even worse.

Actually, the last to jobs I had did track it down to the point of requesting records. I was suprised, but they were having problems contacting my high school and called me, to see if I could get the transcripts for them. So, maybe some companies don't check, but it's not a certainty at all. These were both large companies though, so maybe it depends on the size of the company. Don't know.

Arpig -> RE: no GED sorry no work (5/20/2006 8:25:54 AM)

I suspect it would depend on the resources the company has...and I suspect the jobs you were applying for didn't fall into the "grunt-work" manual labour category refered to in the OP.
If there is a security issue in the job, then be prepared to have your resume checked out completely. But for your average joe job at a small company, it would be surprising if they even bothered to check if the previous employers even existed.

NakedOnMyChain -> RE: no GED sorry no work (5/20/2006 9:57:33 AM)

I know that classes have already been mentioned, but I intend to mention them again.  [:D]  I have many friends, and a sibling, who went through the GED program.  The staff work with you very hard to get you to pass.  They provide one on one help and tutoring.  It's a great setup, because if there's something you don't understand, you can just ask.  I believe it costs a nominal fee, but the rewards far outweigh the cost.

I can check and see if any of my sister's books from the GED prep are still lying around.  I'm heading out that way in about an hour.  If they are, I'd be happy to send them to you.  Don't be disappointed if I can't find them, though.  It's been several years since she was enrolled, and she might have tossed them.  It's worth a shot though.

One thing you might consider in the meantime, is learning your multiplication tables.  I had a hell of a time learning them, which my mathematically inclined family couldn't comprehend.  The only thing that worked for me were flashcards.  Have a friend or someone close drill you several times daily with the flashcards.  (That sounded really dirty, didn't it?)  It might not work for you, but it couldn't hurt.

P.S.- I couldn't long divide without a calculator until last year.  That says something for my local Catholic school system.  I graduated high school with honors and went to Purdue as an honors student.  Doesn't instill much faith in the system.  I decided it was finally time to learn, though, so I practiced, practiced, practiced for no other reason than the desire to be able to.

That guy "Dave".....I can't remember his last name who founded WENDY'S was a high school dropout.
Bill Gates dropped out of college.

MistressSassy66 -> RE: no GED sorry no work (5/20/2006 10:13:39 AM)

Thats not true with all places.
One of the major grocery stores here in Maine hires people without diploma's or GED's.
bishop dropped out of high school in the 10th grade, she has no GED and has worked for a Amored Truck company.
Right now she is the manager of the new department they created at her work place.

A job interview would tell an Employer if your smart enough to handle the job.
Personally,I relied on the face to face, rather than a paper thats says they have an education.

Granted if you want to be a Teacher or an Engineer you need that piece of paper
that says you can do the job.

FelinePersuasion -> RE: no GED sorry no work (5/20/2006 10:58:38 AM)

Thank you all for the replies. It's given me something to think about, And as soon as monday rolls around I'll be calling the school to find transcripts, so I know how many credits I need and where!

Unfortunately these are the exceptions rather than the rule.

In the real world, things like diplomas and college degrees are VERY important - not necessarily where you went and what you studied, but that you went and completed.

FelinePersuasion -> RE: no GED sorry no work (5/20/2006 11:16:32 AM)

darq, I also wanted to mention I'd never go in saying oh I can't do math I can't finish a ged I can't do shit, or nothing. that's so not the attitude to have. Even if someone was a rocket scientist, that negative of a tude would ruin any chances.

It's just pertinant information in this thread, cause it relates.

Dustyn -> RE: no GED sorry no work (5/20/2006 11:35:15 AM)

It's not difficult in the least to get a job without a GED or a diploma.  Most employers for menial labor jobs don't even bother with checking on whether or not you graduated.  Hell, if they can't be bothered to check for legal work status, what makes you think that they will bother themselves of a diploma?

Nor did I suggest that you *did* say that ...  I just said, don't mention your lack thereof. Play it down ... Keep it low.

However, they gotta find out somehow that you don't have a GED and since, from my personal experience, most places with volunteer, entry level (ie cashier, customer service and even some lower management positions) did not actually check on it ... I figured you must have been the one to tell them. Please don't take offense.
