SAMHAIN09 -> What do you think is the sadest thing on earth? (8/17/2011 1:54:15 PM)

To me it's when two people that loved and would do anything for each other end up hating each other to the point where they actually wouldn't care if the other died.

That you have to have a license to drive a car yet anyone can be a parent.

NuevaVida -> RE: What do you think is the sadest thing on earth? (8/17/2011 2:09:56 PM)

That people don't realize their full potential for joy.

I don't know what my absolute saddest would be but this would definitely be in the running for the top spot.

your spouse whom you love and adore, dies.
Watching a loved one suffer and knowing there's nothing you can do to help them before they finally die.

A child crying over the loss of a parent or someone close to them - something you cannot help them fix.

Holding a friend while he dies young and traumatically and knowing the only thing you can do for him is to make sure he doesn't die alone.

That human beings keep breeding to the expense of all else

When somebody who should help doesn't. And they know they should and admit it, but just don't have the guts to do it, and admit that too. Then cry and beg you to forgive them for their weakness.

And you want to, but just can't.

Oh, I know. MasterCord's response, though, about a child crying over the loss of a parent. I'm having a hard time getting that out of my head, now. Too poignant.

I think you may be onto something there.

I've seen a lot of sad things in my life.  To try to single one out as the saddest would be too hard and the chance to thinking of something sadder is bound to come to me after I post this.  But the other day I read something that, to me, was not only sad, but true and thought provoking.

When someone asked the Dalai Lama what surprises him most.  This was his response...

"Man, because he sacrifices his health in order to make money.  Then he sacrifices money to recuperate his health.  And then he is so anxious about the future that he does not enjoy the present;  The result being that he does not live in the present or the future;  He lives as if he is never going to die, and then he dies having never really lived."

LillyBoPeep -> RE: What do you think is the sadest thing on earth? (8/17/2011 3:32:46 PM)

lots of things in the world make me sad.

people losing spouses/boyfriends/girlfriends -- terribly sad. when a beautiful connection is randomly snuffed out.

Noma makes me sad -- if you've never seen it but have a strong tummy and/or have not recently eaten, google it. totally preventable yet horrendously disfiguring illness mostly because these people just can't get food. there shouldn't be a hungry person anywhere on earth.

people who are good or who are doing good things dying, while crappy people who hurt those around them linger around forever. long-term, debilitating illnesses. crippling poverty. abuse, rape, etc. people do some pretty awful things to each other.

the state of existence for many non-human species. we continually encroach on their habitats, we do lots and lots of veeery awful things, most of which make no sense unless you think about the universe in financial terms only.

water that can be set on fire because there's so much natural gas in it. have you ever seen Gasland?

i could go on and on...

The things some people do to children

playfulotter -> RE: What do you think is the sadest thing on earth? (8/17/2011 6:10:09 PM)

To me the saddest thing is how so many people never plan ahead or  the consequences of their actions now and how they translate to the future...They just do things to satiate a whim or need that is very temporary....One point being buying a pet they can't take care of and then just tossing them aside like they have no feelings...but this idea can work for many aspects of  life.
