Lucylastic -> Dems Keep their seats In Wisconsin (8/17/2011 3:06:02 PM)

Both of the Democratic Wisconsin state senators up for recall elections have survived.

The Democrats targeted in Tuesday's election were among the 14 senators who fled the state in February in opposition to Republican Gov. Scott Walker's proposal curbing public employee collective bargaining rights.

Both won in recalls against Republican challengers.

Democrats picked up two seats through the nine recalls but were unable to wrest majority Senate control away from the GOP, which now holds a narrow 17-16 majority. Before the recalls, Republicans had a 19-14 edge in the chamber.

Democratic Sen. Bob Wirch of Pleasant Prairie defeated Kenosha attorney Jonathan Steitz, and Sen. Jim Holperin of Conover beat tea party Republican Kim Simac of Eagle River.

A third Democrat won a recall election last month. Two Republicans were defeated in six recall elections last week.

Even though they remain in the minority, Democrats were savoring Tuesday's victories.

Wisconsin Democratic Party Chairman Mike Tate said Democrats have "fundamentally changed the face of power in the Wisconsin Legislature" through the recalls. Even though Republicans remain in the majority, Tate said Democrats' picking up two seats and making gains in Republican districts sets the table for big wins next year.

"It's really hard to go five for nine and not be pleased of the progress that we made," he said.

Republican Senate Majority Leader Scott Fitzgerald said in a statement that he was proud the GOP maintained its majority through the recalls. He said Tuesday's results were a rejection of the recall process.

"The problems facing our state are too serious for these political games, and the Democrats' permanent campaign cycle," Fitzgerald said in the statement. "The Democrats need to start working with the other side of the aisle, not just moving on to their next recall target."

Walker pledged last week to reach out to Democratic leaders to find proposals they could work on together, but his overtures were met with skepticism by the Democrats still stung by his pushing through of the collective bargaining bill without compromises.

Holperin, who won with 54 percent of the vote based on unofficial results, said the election showed that not everyone disapproved of Democrats leaving the state during the heated collective bargaining debate.

"Voters apparently think that was more of a good thing than a bad thing," he said.

Thankfully this debacle is over for now. The TV ads were getting extremely annoying.....more so than during a presidential election.

On the other hand....I have little doubt that the recall petitions for Gov. Scott Walker are already being printed, so they can hit the streets the first day they can legally be circulated.

For those of you here, who are not in Wisconsin, you have no idea what a circus this has been so far. The only thing missing are the peanuts and elephants.

Ok where are all the those from the right last week that called these two to be for republicans? Insanity? servant? Still think last week was a win? Awfully quiet on this thread

Hillwilliam -> RE: Dems Keep their seats In Wisconsin (8/18/2011 7:34:37 AM)

Soooooooooooooooo, if only 2 Republicans being removed from office in a recall is a Republican win, what is ZERO Democrats being removed from office called?

mnottertail -> RE: Dems Keep their seats In Wisconsin (8/18/2011 7:44:40 AM)

liberal media conspiracy relating the truth?

servantforuse -> RE: Dems Keep their seats In Wisconsin (8/18/2011 9:38:13 AM)

Lets see. 35 to 40 million dollars spent on 8 recall elections where the goal was for the democrats to retake control of the state senate. After all of this the republicans have control with a 17 to 16 seat majority. As far as a recall of Scott Walker next winter. Approximately 540,000 signatures will be needed to start it and an additional 30 million or so will also have to be raised. Will out of state unions still be willing to pour that much money into Wisconsin just 8 months before the presidential election ? I'm not so sure.

Hold on, I thought walker et al were saying in the winter that it was a small minority against this. That the "people" were for it. How then could or should anyone lose their seat in a recall? I would have assumed it was a slam dunk and that victory lap would be a non event. What am I missing servant?

DomKen -> RE: Dems Keep their seats In Wisconsin (8/18/2011 10:25:40 AM)

Some facts to keep in mind, the rules for recalls in Wisconsin require the office holder to have been in office more than one year. This means the 6 republicans recalled were people who won election in the November 2010 elections, a huge wave election for Democrats, so those 6 were in very safe Republican districts. Despite the demographic factors against defeating any of the 6 2 did lose. That's why Walker and Kasich and the other tea bagger governors have suddenly decided compromise might not be such a bad idea.

DomYngBlk -> RE: Dems Keep their seats In Wisconsin (8/18/2011 10:27:23 AM)

Yeah saw that all over the news here in Ohio. Senate Leader here and House Leader all the sudden want to sit down and compromise. lol they realize they are toasted

I wonder what the union rank and file thinks of the head goons flushing all their dues money down a shithole

Especially when they find out there isnt going to be any money left for the things its supposed to be going towards, like strike funds (etc).

I think they are quite happy, and you might want to re-check the unions books......they are far from insolvent.

The republican goons and thugs of wisconsin, on the other hand have really poured money into the shithole, now and in future.

They have bankrupted the state with thier little ideological 'mandate'.

LOL.

servantforuse -> RE: Dems Keep their seats In Wisconsin (8/18/2011 12:53:29 PM)

Some union members in Wisconsin actually are happy. They are no longer forced to pay union dues. It is expected that 50% of teachers in Wisconsin will opt out. WEAC, the state teachers union anounced layoff notices to 42% of their workforce. No more confiscated money to run the union and support democrats running for office.
