To the OP - yes, Charlie, there really is penile cancer, and it is almost exclusively the realm of males over 50, who have not been circumcised.

I work in Urology surgery, and have seen a couple of penectomies...... and they are a radical procedure. Basically, the penis is taken off at the skin level or deeper and the urethra is routed to the skin.
The cancer itself looks like hell, so for me, i would think a fair amount of denial goes into not seeing it for what it is. The docs I work with wouldn't just lob a penis off because it looked suspicious - if something was hinky about the tissue during a circ. they would biopsy and come back another day.
I'm not saying the surgeon erred, but I think he was probably thinking medically, not humanly. Cancer bad, get it off! - not, cancer bad, tell patient and let them get used to the idea, then get it off.

You work in Healthcare but write "prostrate" instead of prostate? Hope you aren't a doctor. [8D]

Well, you know spell-check can't catch everything. Glad you're reading every word.

Yes. that's right. prostrate cancer.  hope you're taking the news lying down.

Oddly enough the friend who had prostate cancer got divorced about 2 years after his treatment was completed - the wife divorced him, not for not getting it up anymore but for playing hide the sausage with other women and being caught, so much for not being able to have sex anymore.

Hey LadyC....

My mom has a very cute little throw pillow on the bed...one side says "tonight"....the other side says "not tonight".....   my very cute and adorable elderly parents...what can I say?  Anyway, my Mom always left the "tonight" side facing out....made for a fun conversation piece when guests would take the "two-cent" tour of the house.

Anyway, after my Dad had the radioactive seeding and started taking the meds, it did affect him sexually. (hey, even for a guy in his 70's...now 80's...they were still sexually active up to that point.)  I came over to help them fix something, and saw the pillow turned over to "Not Tonight"   I made a joke about it, and my Mom admitted to me, that my Dad turned it over, and was feeling a bit depressed about it. It hasn't read "tonight" since.

LoL. I was just waiting for this old familiar accusation. Anytime a man says something a chick like you doesn't like, he's "angry at women."

Come on. Call me an asshole....or a misogynist. Come on, I know that's your default. Let's have it.

I mean after all you're the guy who favors "paid encounters" and "mail order brides" - still wondering why Western women don't give you the time of the day?

Damn you're pathetic. You're still clinging to these bullshit lies that *you* made up up about me? You should look into counseling, as well as reading comprehension classes. I know you won't, because apparently you like being a dumb cunt, but you should seek some form of help anyway.

LadyPact -> RE: This is fucked up (8/18/2011 9:14:52 PM)

DM, could you remind Me of your prior screen name?

As invested as you are with the thought that you ARE your penis, I find it strange that you think women aren't as invested in their breasts (especially in Western culture). Just as women can live and thrive without breasts, so could a man live and thrive without a penis.

You're comparing apples to oranges. The penis (as well as the testicles) is a sex organ, breasts are not (or so those lovely breast feeding in public threads have said repeatedly).

For a truer comparison, you'd have to talk about something like cervical cancer.

Hey Zephyr...
I think I just fixed the problem....every time I type "prostate" my spell checker offers to correct it...and changes it to "prostrate"....  which I suppose is better than the substitute word under it ...which was "prostitute"  ...guess I should start wearing my glasses more often when I type....

It is hardly superficial to have a profound sense of loss losing a part of one's body.   What a remarkable lack of compassion.

Profound sense of loss is one thing. Would they feel like they weren't women if they lost an arm or leg? I doubt it.

Name calling of that sort is so completely unnecessary.

Well then you let me know when you've said as much to the women here who call me asshole, dick, prick, misogynist, etc. And all the other bullshit accusations they like to hurl my way. Or is it that the name-calling is only bad when it's a big, mean man doing the game calling?

hausboy -> RE: This is fucked up (8/18/2011 10:04:35 PM)

and if the mods are paying attention tonight... there will be one less gracing the virtual pages after tonight....I really have to wonder how someone can post such blatant sexist baloney, and then wonder why people call him a misogynist?

I don't doubt it.  And there's a VA hospital down the street from me that is full of men and women who are dealing with the trauma and emotions that come with losing a limb.  I deliberately...and willingly....had a double mastectomy.  It was a very odd feeling, waking up in the recovery room, and seeing them gone.  For months to follow, it was an adjustment for me--I kept feeling like they were there when they weren't.  I was happy to have my surgery--but I did feel a very strange sense of loss that I wasn't expecting.

I personally find most of the more vulgar name-calling distasteful, regardless of who is doing it, and I try not to engage it if I can control myself.   Your posts strike me as misogynist views--I'm not surprised at all that you've been called that before.

Child, these names you are called for they are true of your behaviour upon these fora. You say you have no anger for women, this I will not dispute for you know alone what is within your heart. But that you have much anger is not to be doubted, and you do direct it at women, in particular and in general. The entire purpose of your postings on this thread is such.

I too recall a prior thread wherin you expressed a preference for the single life, with the marked preference for the services of a prostitute as well expressed. You expressed this preference with much insult and derision, and much foul language as well. It is for reasons such as this that these descriptors you object to so are said of you. You must look within, child, for there only will you see the why of these things, only within will you come to find that which causes you to to lash out in such anger and hatred. Look within, child, and seek the why of your hatred and fury, and then you can exorcise this demon which posesses you. For this pain and anger is not as it is meant to be. Life is to be a joy.

I will pray to My Goddess and to Her Lord, He Who Is Dead Yet Lives that they grant you the wisdom to seek this peace of which you have such need.

Be at peace
Aneka

I had a hysterectomy less than 2 weeks ago to cure cervical adenocarcinoma in situ. If my cancer had been the more common squamous kind that's caused by HPV, I could have been cured with a simple cone biopsy and kept my fertility. But cone biopsies don't cure adenocarcinoma. It keeps coming back and managing it means cone biopsies on a regular basis. Also, trying to manage adenocarcinoma with cone biopsies can be deadly because this type of cancer is known to produce skip lesions that aren't detected or removed by cone biopsies. It's hard enough having to accept my permanent loss of fertility. Unfortunately, I'm also at risk of developing vaginal adenocarcinoma. Removal of a vagina is definitely comparable to removal of a penis. Both mean permanent inability to have sexual intercourse. I could definitely understand a guy refusing to allow a doctor to cut off his dick. If my doctor ever insists on removing my vagina, I'll likely refuse.

So sorry dbg--
hope you're doing okay post-op and get lots of support during recovery.  (hope it doesn't come down to more drastic surgery, but if it does, a 2nd and 3rd opinion are always a good thing.) Get well soon!

AneNoz -> RE: This is fucked up (8/18/2011 10:34:00 PM)

Cancer is cancer. It matters not in which part of the body it resides, it is a scourge and a vile thing. I feel greatly for the poor man in the story that began this thread, a horrid thing to be certain. I have no doubt that the surgeon did belive his course of action to be the best, yet he was much mistaken.

I hope his God forgives him, for I do not doubt that his patient and his patient's family will not.

Often it is that doctors fail to be fully cognizant of that which is of import to the one who is ill. To some a life without a breast, or uterus, or penis is too terrible to contemplate. These ones require time and love of friends and family to bring themselves to acceptance of such a life. The body never forgets itself as it was, and such amputations without preparation are a trauma of great magnitude.

I will pray to My Goddess and to The Physician as well to bring healing to these poor people in this time of great distress. I beseech all to pray to your chosen Gods and Goddesses as well to do the same.

Be at peace
Aneka

My prayers are with you as well defiantbadgirl, you poor dear woman, this is a terrible thing you face. Such a loss is not to be borne lightly. Be strong, for you have need of such, and take, as well, the comfort of knowing you are loved, and you are dear to many.

Be at peace

My husband and our roommate have both been very helpful. I find it ironic that there's such a stigma attached to HPV, yet the worst type of cervical cancer isn't even caused by a sexually transmitted virus. I would've taken HPV related squamous cancer any day over adenocarcinoma. If I could have been cured with a cone biopsy alone, I'd be back at work and Sir and I wouldn't be constantly arguing about money.
