No, $50 won't do it.

Once you overwrite a piece of data several times it is virtually unrecoverable.

The trick is to know how to overwrite a section of the drive. There are shredder programs that make it virtually impossible to recover the data.

Search Google for "Data Shredder" or "File Shredder" and you'll find some hits. The method you mentioned for deleting data under Windows just sends the files to the recycle bin. It does this by replacing the first letter in the file table with a null character (not Omega) then it sends a message to the recycler task to tell it where to find it.

Also, if you run linux, there are _lots_ of freeware programs to destroy data. If nothing else you can find utilities to really do a number on the drive: They rewrite exery bit with one, then with 0, then alternating 1's and 0's and then alternating 0's and 1's. It will do this as many times as you have time for before they slap handcuffs on you.

I, however, have a perfectly valid excuse for not handing over that information: I work with pharmaceutical automation and asking for my passwords runs afoul of HIPPA.

It's HIPAA. :)

Edited to change subject line. :D

You are correct. My mistake. It is HIPAA.

Can I blame it on my keyboard being low on battery power? How about being tired? Sunspots? Anything?

I had something totally mean to say (not about or related to you) but I decided better of it. *grins*

Apparently it is a common practice in lawsuits now for the opposing party to ask for your social networking user names and passwords! If it relates in some vague way to the case, they are entitled to receive it. For example if you are claiming your quality of life has been affected by a car accident, say, the other side has the right to crawl through your Facebook, twitter, myspace, and CM accounts, including your private messages. I was pretty shocked when I heard that.

You can eliminate your accounts all you want.  If the attorney for the other side finds out that you had a facebook account and eliminated it, then your case could get thrown out of court.  Real smart being able to wipe your hard drive, not so smart in terms of a good result.  All it takes is one of your facebook friends casually mentioning you had an account at one time, and you are screwed.  Also, some people may feel queasy about lying under oath.

I would never, ever go to jail for contempt, regardless of the principal supposedly involved. They don't have to charge you, and they can keep you there until the judge isn't pissed off anymore or you purge the contempt.  No thanks.  What I think I would do in this situation is take the case up on appeal, and keep appealing for as long as it takes.  I would at least want the court with the highest authority possible to tell me I have to turn over my passwards, not some dumb ass local trial judge.

like termy said, let them ask, they aren't getting it out of me. they wouldn't get my fucking drives either, and without the key, any attempt to access them will just wipe them anyway, so lots of luck to them.

what can they do?

Hi Hannah
Whether we like or not, there is really nothing we can do...except use discretion in the first place.

The concept of "delete" is really just an illusion.  I have seen the local FBI office come up with some incredible evidence against suspects-- texts, emails, voicemail messages--all "deleted" by the senders/recipients.  Made me realize that "delete" is really just a facade.  If I don't want something used against me, I don't send it in the first place.

The government has a whole department now just to scan each and every email. They look for certain keywords etc., and once flagged they are examined more closely. This is how they protect you from terrorism now.

Cmail is scanned. Think not ? Try using the N word in a Cmail. I don't think that the gov scans it all, but think is the operative word here and I doubt the operators of the site will say. It's probably illegal for them to reveal it. But I am under no such restriction. You can find out, but I think it is actually illegal for your ISP to up and put it in the EULA that every byte of information you send or recieve is subject to government scrutiny. It's not a secret, but it's not to be publicized. However if your email is flagged and the feds call for history of all your activity, then it is highly illegal for them to let you know.

Some free country. You have to watch out for the "bad" guys and you have to watch out for the "good" guys.

But really, post your cock pics, that way you have evidence in case you ever have to sue someone for cutting it off. Get paid by the inch. Speaking of which, whatever happened to Lorena Bobbit ?
