All else being equal, would you rather inflict pain on someone who enjoys pain itself, or on someone who dislikes it, but is fond enough of you to volunteer for some genuine suffering? I enjoy both ways, but the latter boils my blood like nothing else.

there's a fair amount of "fond enough of you to volunteer for some genuine suffering" at work for a lot of people who identify as masochists.
(this thread is addressed to sadists, but as a masochist who doesn't get the same "zazz" from it unless it's "real" to me, i just wanted to add that...)
there's often this assumption that they are two distinct and separate camps, and they're not, not even for people who self-ID as masochists. people see "masochist" and they imagine that you're a person who instantly transfers pain to pleasure, or you're someone who will require constant escalation, which isn't true. sometimes masochism is just about wanting someone who will inflict pain on you for his own enjoyment, not necessarily about an "oh yes, that hurts so good, gimme more-n-more-n-more!" experience.

i kicked a guy in the nuts once because i didn't dig him enough to put up with him, despite being a "masochist." fondness for the person matters a great deal. someone who can inspire me to follow him down the rabbit hole is pretty priceless.

why does it bother you?

I'm not a masochist. Master is a sadist. I don't like pain but I love and adore him and suffer for him quite often. He likes that I do so. I like that I do so. I like that I am being of service to him. He likes that I serve him in that way among many other ways. I'm his slave. I do what he wants when he wants whether I like it or not. What's to make your blood boil about that?

When I read the op I got the idea that he was saying the latter was hotter in a good way. But after reading your post and rereading the op I am not really sure. Maybe he will come back and tell us.

The indirect enjoyment of suffering because one enjoys pleasing a sadistic partner is a form of masochism in itself, and personally I prefer that. If the person is the sort of maschocist who simply processes pain as pleasure I'm not really hurting them, now am I? I'm just pleasuring them in a very vigorous fashion. Not that there's anything wrong with that, but it's a very different thing.

+1

and as far as the blood boiling thing goes, i read that as another phrase like "heart racing" or "blood pumping" -- a good thing, etc etc.

Non-masochists. My favorite pet hates pain. Hates to bleed. Hates marks on his body. I like seeing him cry so it's more fun that way. I'm greedy on this one as I have a sub that is also very into being hurt and I don't enjoy my time with her as much as my time with him. At least not when it comes to hurting one of them.

I frequently roleplay with characters who are the 'not masochists but accept pain out of pure submission," and find it hot, but when I was actually with someone who was like that. it was a turnoff for me. I like my partners to have fun.

On the other hand, she also wasn't a very deep submissive (she was scene-curious but completely inexperienced, I think really she just likes bedroom bondage and mild sensation play, although the visit did include a lot of very hot vanilla sex). It's possible if interacting with someone who truly felt enslaved to me, I might feel differently.

I identify as a masocist - but even with that label, pain hurts! I don't get the pain-as-pleasure , but if the pain goes on long enough, and is a certain kind, i hit subspace. I definitely enjoy the fact that while he is hurting me , he is concentrated on me and me alone. I love the feelings when he is done and cuddling me and we have had great sex.

This may not make me a "true" masocist, but i enjoy it.

I guess this would make me a blood-boiling sub.

As a masochist, I prefer a sadist who appreciates the fact that we both are getting what we want.

Ethically, I want them to enjoy it! But specifically where that enjoyment comes from is another matter all together and will affect how I will play them. I do know the more fun they are having the more fun I am having and vice vrs. We fed off each other!

So both ways can be just as much fun. Just different paths to get to the same place.

I like both. A masochist makes for lots of energy and physical workout :) the opposite makes for an awesome mental power exchange.

Don't get me wrong, they both do energy and exchange. In my opinion, each one has more of one then the other.

I'm a masochist, Master is a sadist.

I asked him once which he preferred. His reply was that he loved to hit girls. He also loved to make girls cry with pain. By hitting a masochist, it just meant his fun went on longer until he got to make them cry.

I love me a sadist

Gotta say, when in the sadist role, I want a masochist. I like having control of something they really want.

This is a hard question to answer.

Sometimes I want to pleasure my partner with pain. Other times, I think it would be far easier (for me) to be able to punish them with pain. Punishing a slave by making her stand in the corner or go away from me is rather kind of annoying - if for no other reason than that I have to do without a slave for a while.

I'm not really much of a sadist, but when I _really_ get my sadist hat on I'd much rather hit a woman who absolutely doesn't want it. A masochist is not really able to play fulfill that role.

On the other hand, most of the time I want to see a girl squirm under my riding crop to try and beg, around the gag, "Please take me Master."

So the answer is: "Six of one, half dozen of the other."

I think I agree with this. My previous slave was an extreme masochist, I could probably pull her skin off and throw it against the door and she'd be squirting everywhere haha.

There's a potential submissive I have yet to physically play with (I'll finally be home in a little over a month) and she's not as much a masochist, but the "accepts pain through submission" type but isn't afraid of bloodplay, so we'll see. Unfortunately we won't get to play for almost a year, but it'll certainly be worth the wait.
