It would depend on what they were using the $25 for. Are they using it to do a background check to make sure that you're appropriate for the organization & don't have any nasty things in your history? I'd do it if that were the case, since otherwise the organization has to come up with money for screening each applicant.

There are legitimate reasons why an agency might charge a fee: some types of volunteer work require background checks.

I think I might inquire the reason for the fee though and check out the agency a bit more.

Especially if that volunteer group worked with children. hell yes.

Can you imagine if a volunteer group that worked with UM's did NOT screen applicants? Every perve on the planet would apply. It would be like the TSA all over again.

This particular organization is a reputable group based in my hometown. It's called "Pets on Wheels" and I would take my girl's dog and go visit patients in hospice.

It sounds petty of me bitching about $25 when people just want to be visited during their dying days I just never had to pay to volunteer and I have been volunteering since I was 17 at multiple organizations and I now have 3 grandums of my own (to give you an idea of how long I've been volunteering).

Honesly I didn't think of the agency having to pay for the background check, that's a valid point.
I'll be asking about that in my orientation tomorrow night.

If it's hospice chances are they are doing a full background check. They want to make sure you aren't an angel of death or whatever. They are pretty specific.

Here's the response I received when I asked "Why..............."

It’s a one time registration fee which helps defray the cost of training and materials as well as other expenses involved with non profit organization.
Many programs do require a registration or donation as part of the volunteer commitment. Some fees for other visiting pet programs in our area go up a high as $100.00.

Off the top of my head, I said No, and I am sticking with that. I can see the point of the background check, but if that is the case, they should just make you go pay for it, or for the fingerprints! I have done that, and have no issue paying for a specific requirement like that, or paying for a training day.

It's the random amount that bugs me, and the non specific "costs". And as for the $100 commitment to use YOUR animal that YOU are maintaning, as a visitor? Absurd.

Is the dog a certified therapy dog?

If that's the case then there's plenty of training and certification that has already been paid for by the dog owner. It does sound a little iffy. It almost sounds as if they are not only asking for your time, but charging you a fee to help out the organization. If it were for a background check I could easily see the point, but you are giving your time as a contribution to that organization already.

I'd probably grumble a little, but if it was something I really wanted to do and it was for a good cause, then I'd do a one-time $25 fee, yeah. $100, probably not.

It might go towards the cost of printing or buying the training booklets, the t-shirt or vest you and the dog would probably have to wear, nametags, maybe little trinkets for the patients, etc., that kind of stuff.

I don't know about your area, but some of the animal rescues have programs set up like that. The humane society in my area definitely does. They do require some of their training, but they don't charge you. In addition, some of the hospitals already have programs set up for the type of thing, nursing homes, and some schools, and libraries too.

Potty - I've worked in hospice. A lot of times what happens is they spend time, energy and money to train you and then when reality hits, you walk. (you - general, not you Potty).

Frankly, people don't value what they don't have to pay / work for. I would totally pay $25 to volunteer (and have for ... well the first time I remember paying it was in 1998 in Philadelphia). Yes, my dear, it has been around for awhile!

I would and have. Volunteer programs cost resources to run. Just think of the $25 as showing your commitment. They don't want to invest time into you and have you flake.

Yes, I'd pay it. It costs money to organize such programs, and if it was something I really wanted to do then I'd also have no problem paying a fee to assist the program in coordinating the volunteer efforts of others.

Yes, I'd pay it and I have before to register Myself as a volunteer. If I remember correctly, it covered My background check and orientation costs.
