I don't have money, but I do have time. This has been a bone of contention with the organization I've been volunteering with. I think that we've ironed it out. But all I can give is my time simply because I have no extra money. If I had it, I probably would pay it for the reasons that Sunny & some others have said.

I might, but I would expect the fee to qualify as a tax deduction.

If it doesn't involve a background check, just a way to make money, then I think they're going to wind up with a lot less volunteers then they hoped for.

yes I'd pay it because most likely if I wasn't donating my time I'd be donating money anyway and those charities I volunteer for usually are desperate for money to keep them running. People still have to get paid, items still have to be bought. gas, electricity, bills have to be paid, etc... They have to get that money from somewhere. They don't stay open for free.

In the USA, it does.

I would pay if it was a passion of mine. But I could see how that answer might change if my finances were different.

As does your mileage traveling to and from the volunteer site.

The dementia facilities where I do music therapy often have visiting animal days. Nobody pays a 'fee' to bring pets to spend time with the folks there.

Pay a fee to support the organization when I volunteer? Nope. Right now I have more time than $$. They'll have to choose which they need more.

Why not just contact the hospice directly and offer your services? Cut out the middle man so to speak

I am registered to begin orientation in Sept. w/the Hospice Society, I just wanted to get other opionions to see if I was being petty.

I did ask the woman in charge if this was tax deductible and at that point she became very snippy and told me to ask my accountant but if I had issues paying the fee that I should look elsewhere.

I've never been asked to pay before being able to volunteer but every organization that I've volunteered with has rec'd a donation from me at some point down the line.  I don't like the $$ being mandatory before volunteering.  If the organization needs the cash make it optional not mandatory and I bet they'd get even more than the mandatory fee.

I thank you all for your opinions!

Not always. You need a letter from them to claim it as a donation. VP didn't mention that they were doing that.

What we've found with the shelter up here is that they make it difficult to volunteer. You have to take a training class but they rarely offer one. They really don't want new people. They just want money.

No, but then my desire to do charity work is tenuous and transient. It doesn't take much to turn me off to it - basically if they irk me in some minor way they're screwed, I'm sure as hell not giving them money for the privilege of giving them labor.

I'd check over their finances first.  How much of what they collect goes to provide a service, and how much goes for salaries.

Absolutely, I would pay it.  It would be irresponsible for nonprofits to NOT screen their volunteers.

The snippy reference to your accountant would have ended it for me too. You do a lot of volunteer work & I know that it's because you want to do these things to make a difference. You are not a petty person. I'm glad that you're still going to be able to volunteer for the Hospice.

Heck yes I would. If it was something I wanted to do and that I believed in that would be enough reason for me to pay the fee.
