No matter what you thought of his politics you had to respect him as a man and a leader. Certainly a major blow to Canadian politics. I was very pleased when I saw that Prime Minister Harper had offered him a state funeral. Very classy of Mr. Harper.

Jack Layton will be sorely missed.  I met him in person at the funeral of my BIL not quite 2 yrs ago.  Rick was one of the highest-ranking employees for the federal Liberal Party.   All the big-wig politicos were there, and I distinctly remember Mr Layton approaching me outside, once the servcie was over.  He said he had noticed I was sitting with the family and wanted to know how I was related.  I told Mr Layton I'd known him for the 30 yrs he'd been with my sister, through 20 yrs of marriage.  He showed heartfelt sympathy for our loss and stayed with me until a close friend showed up, he made sure I wasn't alone.

RIP Jack, you'll be greatly missed and the country is indeed poorer for your passing.

Are you bragging or complaining?

HannahLynHeather -> RE: Jack Layton Passes Away (8/24/2011 8:35:39 AM)

bragging. ignorance of the world beyond their borders is a point of pride for most americans

Just sad he didn't get to see the NDP win the last national election

I'm a long-time NDP supporter, and I'm also a monarchist and a United Empire loyalist as well. I have never supported Harper or his ideology, so maybe you need to tuck your republicanism back into the dark wet place it came out of. OK?

About the comment I would expect from one of the Orange Order "Dixiecrats" and self identified British colonials living in the British North American Garrison and Deep South of Canada.

But a royalist like you is welcome to try and personally shove it up my ass if you can, white boy. The days you or your loyalist cousins in Ontario telling anyone what to do or think are over.

Fortunately most the rest of Canada is leaving the right wing quasi-socialistic relics of Ontario behind, and don't care about how bad your Anglo-Saxon feelings were hurt by the Yanks two hundred years ago when your ancestors fled to the north, whipping their slaves in front of them.

So do you support having your own Canadian monarch too, along with a bunch of inbred nobility for southern Ontario? Perhaps a "Church of Canada"and a local House of Lords, too. Harper managed to put the "Royal" back in the military again, that should warm your little heart.

Better pray Canada being a republic is not put to the vote -

While about 80 per cent of respondents agreed that the monarchy had an important place in Canada's history, a majority also felt it was out of step with the times. More than 60 per cent felt that a constitutional monarchy was outdated.

http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/story/2009/10/26/prince-charles-poll.html

And Canada's demographics are against you too. Maybe Southern Ontario should secede from Canada and return to being one of the Crown Colonies,  and sponge off the UK instead of the rest of Canada.

Scratch a UE loyalist and you find a sheet wearing national socialist with a hereditary fuehrer.  They still have segregated schools in Toronto.

I don't know why the USasians of any political persuasion put up with their neo-colonial shyt, much of the rest (and especially those west of them) of Canada certainly doesn't.

So what do you think will happen in a generation or two, when Southern Ontario is a rust belt, and the prairie provinces and BC have the growing majority of the population, and they certainly won't be "blue blooded" WASPs?

Not everyone is an Ontario resident.

As for Jack Layton, as a serious counterweight to the Tory madness, he will be missed.

HannahLynHeather -> RE: Jack Layton Passes Away (8/24/2011 9:57:58 PM)

as politicians go, layton wasn't too bad. a decent guy at heart i guess.

FirstQuaker -> RE: Jack Layton Passes Away (8/24/2011 10:09:08 PM)

Well, we will see what goes on next election. But if the Liberals and the NDP cannot get a viable leader between them and a consensus, the Tory machine will roll on. I think even in Ontario the Tory plank is points ahead.of either one -

quote:

The Progressive Conservative party has blown open the race to form Ontario’s next government, according to a new Ipsos Reid poll which shows the opposition Tories with a commanding, 11-point lead over Premier Dalton McGuinty’s Liberals. That lead has grown by five percentage points in the last month alone. Tory popularity now stands at 42%, with the Liberals at 31%, according to the survey. The NDP is in third place, at 22% support.

If you want to discuss Canadian politics, then start a thread, but have just a little respect for Mr. Layton, who you say you liked. This thread really isn't the place to espouse your particular views on the proper future course of the country, or your personal bigotries. Please take it elsewhere.

<And yes, I gave Hanners a blast as well>

Jack Layton was one of the best, his compassion and dignity, and good humour and optimism will be missed. In an increasingly nasty and crude Americanized political landscape, his calm and reasoned approach was a breath of fresh air.

Rest in peace Jack, I'm just sorry I won't get the chance to vote for you in the future, I did look forward to hearing the words "The Right Honourable Mr. Layton". He brought the NDP so close, I don't quite know who can take up the cause with the his skill, panache and integrity.

heartcream -> RE: Jack Layton Passes Away (8/24/2011 10:58:22 PM)

I remember when Jack Layton first came on the scene years ago and my moms was very impressed with him. He didnt seem to have the grit to be a Harper type politician but that is what I loved about him. Jack Layton had good intent and a good heart. That doesnt do well in politics. My mom is so sad you are gone. RIP Jack Layton, RIP

I don't know. Leader of the Opposition isn't something to sneeze at, especially for the NDP. Maybe there's a backlash starting against the Harper types' cutthroat style of politics. I certainly hope so.

Niagara falls and the CN tower will be lit up with orange to honour Jack Layton.
http://www.huffingtonpost.ca/2011/08/25/niagara-falls-layton_n_936922.html
Tony Baldinelli of the Niagara Parks Commission says they received phone calls and emails requesting the falls be turned orange for Layton, who died Monday of cancer.

There were also requests on Facebook.

Baldinelli says the request was approved by the Niagara Falls Illumination Board.

The falls will be illuminated in orange at various times on Saturday night.

Officials say the CN Tower in Toronto will also be to be lit in orange from sundown Saturday until sunrise Sunday in honour of the late NDP leader.

zephyroftheNorth -> RE: Jack Layton Passes Away (8/25/2011 8:43:21 PM)

I think it's really awesome he's being honored this way. While I don't like him as much as Ed Broadbent there is no doubt that Jack did great things.
