On your question, I can't say anything about popular request, but anytime a thread has gone away that I was curious about, I've just written VAA to ask about it. In the past, there have been times that I've asked if a thread or a particular comment be restored. (Not always My own.) Sometimes Alpha says yes and other times she says no.
I have to wonder if the thread and the profile were a hoax. Since the information was put out there that the address and phone number could be tracked by going to the person's profile, it might have been in somebody's best interest to pull it. I can think of a lot of reasons why a vindictive person would want to plaster somebody else's information on the internet to cause them trouble.
