~Fast Reply~ I understand how it sucks that this woman couldn't work anymore and so lost her insurance. Couple of things though. She is legally entitled to Cobra insurance, and it doesn't mention that she has applied for medicare or medicaid, both which she would be eligible for due to the cancer. She says "we" when talking about how the garage sale was set up. So obviously, she isn't alone. Why not rent a booth at a flea market? Since there is a "we" she has the help to do it. I know it isn't the popular opinion, but the area she lives in has a law about how many garage sales you can have, so she can't do it. There are other options for her to sell her things and make money. There is using flea markets, online selling. I'm sure her municipality has other laws that people don't like either, like not being able to leave cars up on blocks in the front yard, when you are able to put your trash out for trash day and must bring your cans from the curb. I'm sorry that she is sick, but really, that doesn't mean she gets to circumvent her local laws. Not unheard of for local fire departments to try to help raise money for sick residents or anything else. We hear stories of "so and so lost their health insurance," but it never talks about them applying for medicare or medicaid which would help their situations. If they are too proud to apply for help, then I don't have a lot of compassion for them wanting to do things like have garage sales to raise the money.
