My father was born in 1920 and grew up on a ranch in northwestern Colorado. According to him, he never saw a black person until he was 12 years old (on a trip to Denver with his father and brothers, they attended a baseball game played by two all-black professional baseball teams).
Yet they still had "whites only" resturants, public restrooms and water fountains in his area of northwestern Colorado - however there "whites only" meant no Hispanics could use them.
I am not trying to deny any of what happened, FD, and thank you for that information.
I hope that this is in the spirit of "filling in the blanks" here, which you just did.
I hope that I am doing the same for you and others.
