For the television reporter, clad in his red cagoule emblazoned with the CNN logo, it was a dramatic on-air moment, broadcasting live from Long Island, New York during a hurricane that also threatened Manhattan.

“We are in, right, now…the right eye wall, no doubt about that…there you see the surf,” he said breathlessly. “That tells a story right there.”

Stumbling and apparently buffeted by ferocious gusts, he took shelter next to a building. “This is our protection from the wind,” he explained. “It’s been truly remarkable to watch the power of the ocean here.”

The surf may have told a story but so too did the sight behind the reporter of people chatting and ambling along the sea front and just goofing around. There was a man in a t-shirt, a woman waving her arms and then walking backwards. Then someone on a bicycle glided past.

That you cant thank god (or your favorite deity)for the fact it wasnt as bad/ dangerous as it could have been, is about the most dumb thing you have said for at least twenty minutes.
Plus you would have been the first to call out Obama and the left for not taking it seriously, just as Bush got caught with his pants down in the wake of Katrina, to cover your disappointment by pointing out its failure to kill and maim says so much.

Status: offline 		I'd like to see that CNN video mentioned in the snip, Sanity.  It sounds hilarious.  The media just can't help but go over the top in pursuit of dramatic coverage.

Status: offline 		The hype is directly proportional not to the size of the storm, but the number of people it inconveniences.   Hell, even Katrina, a far more powerful storm, did not roll over the same number of dense population centers as this one.  More people were inconvenienced by this one.

As for the media, hype glues people to televisions.  Revenue-wise, its like having another Superbowl.

Status: offline 		The storm that comes the closest as far as path and strength was Donna, in 1960. 50 dead, affecting every state on the east coast.

Better safe than sorry. They kept saying Huga was going to be a rain event... until 3 days before he hit.

Which reminds me... gotta check for the grey lady!

Status: offline 		Looks like Vermont and upstate NY were hammered by flooding; as one guy said on the radio, "you can't evacuate the whole state!"  There are villages completely cut off, with houses and crops destroyed.  My old stomping grounds (Dutchess County, NY) had a lot of problems with flooding and road damage.

Nearly 24/7 coverage on every news outlet is overkill. Weather Channel or a new "Weather Channel Extreme" would be quite sufficient. Till then, feel free to change the channel.

That said, the storm itself was not over-hyped. If it werent for a Canadian dry front that dissipated a lot of Irene's energy and turned it a few miles it could have been a very different story...and the story is bad enough as it is.

Status: offline 		I'd like to see sanity stuck in a bathroom for about 10 hours as an F5 hurricane rolls over him and turns what was a nice house into rubble for about 10 hours and then come back and talk about 'hype'.

He'd be shitting his pants and crying for mama when the the barometric pressure was dropping so fast it started sucking air out thru the toilet and his ears were popping avery few minutes.

Status: offline 		Master's been without power at his house since last Saturday night and they told him he'll be without until probably this Saturday. Sigh. Overhype? I don't think so. There are towns in NY state and VT that were wiped out and flooding that is still happening in NJ and dams that overflowed or broken. I don't think billions of dollars of damage and lives lost is overhype.
