http://wweek.com/portland/article-17888-sticker_shocker.html Apparently google sent a bunch of stickers to Portland businesses to put on their windows to show they are on Google places. The sticker contains a chip that sends a signal to nearby Smart phones. Portland is evidently the test market for this, as Google starts their launch of Google Wallet. Seems really intrusive to me.

I went to a conference a couple of years ago where the name badges they handed out contained an RFID chip that let employers track the attendance of their employes. The info was contained in one of the paragraphs on a welcome sheet that few actually read. By the end of the conference, you could pick a specific individual, see which sessions they attended, for how long, and which didn't go to much of anything.

I don't know what is worse, the expansion of monitoring, or the fact that some of the people commenting on the story actually like the technology, in a "wow, my phone does cool things" or "Google would never steer us wrong" manner. The "I for one welcome our Google overlords" one was a good one, tho.

Not like those businesses are forced to use the sticker so if you're using it you're agreeing to it. I don't see a problem. I would think it would be a boon for companies to use it to attract business. Don't like it. Don't use it.

People are getting just a little to used to the idea of being watched and prodded for info for my tastes. What worries me more is the acceptance of the tech without a lot of talk about security. those things are really low tech code-wise... People don't realize how easy it would be to hack something like that. They've had devices for some time that snatch and clone cells and credit cards that emit frequencies so something like this would be a piece of cake. Do you really want someone to be able to easily clone your chip and take your identity or worse yet use that to steal your car or break into your house? I love tech but some of it just isn't a good idea. Edit: Didn't realize that went through up above.

I think when you buy a phone it should be Law that the selling agent verbally discuss with you and get your written and verbal authorization to track you and your activity with your phone. If you don't give it, they have to disable all tracking features on your phone, or prevent any and all third parties from accessing the information, if they fail, they have to pay you a fine of $250-$5000 per incedent of breached information (could mean free service for life). At times I think it is cool to allow my phone to know where I am when trying find a pizza place or something. But, real time tracking all the time, no thank you. There have even been recent cases where thieves hack the system and track your location. Then, they know when you are far away from home, so they have plenty of time to rob your ass.

I don't think the businesses care one way or the other, if they even knew about the chip. The problem with her "Don't like it Don't use it" comment is it probably won't be long before we won't have a choice.. They'll be in everything, including us possibly. People have become way too fearful of this sort of thing. RFID is a very simple technology. All it is is a chip that can send out a very low power signal containing one thing and one thing only, the chips ID number. The standard RFID chip can only be read from a distance of an inch or so. The powerful thing is the ID number can be used to do a database lookup. So if you walk up to a store front in Portland and touch your brand new smartphone to the sticker, you will get the Google places info for that business which is a kind of cutsomer generated yellow pages/review site. The RFID chip does not and cannot gather any data. If you don't want Google knowing you've been to the shop simply don't touch your phone to the sticker. As to modern phones GPS capability that is mandated so 911 can find you.

personally I guess I"m just not that paranoid and even if someone wanted to track me they'd be awfully bored...grocery store, work, college, home lol. Finding out where i live now isn't really all that difficult. I'm sure if someone REALLY wanted to know where I am all they would have to do is go online and type in a few websites. You don't need a chip to do that.

Do any of you actually read these stories? The chips are sending information out via google yellow pages. Activate that on certain smart phones and the business will send you info. Your not broadcasting anything about you just out to anybody.

That isn't by any means clear to me. The article says that if you hold your phone to the sticker, it takes you to the website. Very similar to other things I have seen where you take a picture, and it takes you to the website. The scenario they described with google wallet, the one about going into the grocery store, was far more extensive. Taking to the website is probably done through an app. Much like you take a picture of one of those fancy barcode images and an app sends you to a website.

RFID tags have a wide and growing range. I was wondering when someone would challenge your ignorant statements. I'm the guy as usual. Just so you know..there's an internet full of information explaining the ranges including the interactions with numerous materials and outside forces.
