Reset the DVR, kiddies.  Despite the imperial decree on when the President would give his very important (but less important than spending a week hanging out on the millionaires and billionaires island resort) jobs speech, Obama will get to compete with the NFL, instead of the Republican debate next week.

“No one in the Speaker’s office — not the Speaker, not any staff — signed off on the date the White House announced today,” said Brendan Buck, a Boehner spokesman. “Unfortunately we weren’t even asked if that date worked for the House. Shortly before it arrived this morning, we were simply informed that a letter was coming. It’s unfortunate the White House ignored decades — if not centuries — of the protocol of working out a mutually agreeable date and time before making any public announcement.”

Obama relents on jobs speech to Congress, moves address to Sept. 8

Will anyone even bother to watch?

Oh, come on Rich ... he doesn't want to give the speech no-how, no-way, anyway.

I wouldn't be surprised if it gets canceled, or changed again.

Yes, I'll watch. I think it will be very interesting because he has two paths to follow, neither one of which will enhance his position. He either repeats the same old attacks on corporations and the wealthy, calls for more deficit spending and "shovel ready jobs" that he already admitted doesnt exist, or he becomes a Clintonesque centrist, which will make him swallow his own bile.

I don't think he'll do either.  I don't think he can.

hmmm ... well, attacking capitalism is in his DNA, so he'll have to get in a few swipes ...

On reflection ... I'm not sure what he'll do, but it will be a defining moment for him, regardless.

So ... hell ... maybe I will watch.

It could be interesting.

No, he really does want to give it, Firm.  He's going to talk about green jobs!  Shovel ready projects!  Investments!  There is this great idea where the government is going to pay the salaries of people companies hire!  More changes in withholding, so working families can more easily get to write the gov't a check next April!

Or, there is always the Packers vs. the Saints.

Football > Speeches

With all the drama over the NFL this year, this being the first game between two great teams... I can't believe his PR people are letting him do this.
It is just such a bad move.
But then again, maybe he doesn't want everyone watching it, in which case.. good move?

8:30 Eastern.

Of course, that will only give Obama's speechwriters 24 hours to make sure they respond to anything good from the debate.  Add in enough time for the interns to get it into the teleprompter, I suspect he'll start late.

Isn't this the second or third time Beohner has dissed the president??? Who does this guy think he is??? Maybe Obama should have just gone ahead and planned his speech without the joint session??

my guess is that he will extend unemployment until november ninth of 2012, then he is going to tell everyone to take september 9th off, recommend to employers that they fire all of their employees for not showing up and not calling in. This will keep everyone off balance for a year. when election time comes around, he will offer to continue to extend unemployment if they vote for him. The republicans will, of course, argue with this course of action, and will get no votes. Who wants to give up a years' worth of vacation?

Boehner thinks he is the Speaker of the United States House of Representatives, and he knows that the President doesn't get to dictate what happens in his Chamber.

And I'm not sure why President Obama thinks doing this in a joint session of Congress is such a hot idea, either.

I'm confused.

I thought it was the Office of the President's fault for failing to coordinate with Congress that was the problem?

Well, all the people inside the bubble with him still think he's great, misunderstood, and just having a little spot of bad luck.  It's all Bush's fault.

Why thank you. :)

I think I am going to try and stay out of the messy bits, fun as they are to watch.

...

I guess we'll see how well that works.

He thinks he can dictate when to call a joint session because the Constitution explicitly says he can. As to why address them, maybe because he still hopes he can use reason and rhetoric to convince the teabaggers to do the right thing and do the job they claimed they wanted to go to D.C. to do, i.e. create jobs.

It does appear to be shaping up to be a good Greek tragedy, doesn't it?

Starting with those Greco columns, back when he made his acceptance speech, I think.

The only card he's ever had is rhetoric. Maybe this time he thinks he actually has some substance. Of course if he does, its the Tea Party that pushed him into it.
