DeviantlyD -> NYT article on lack of respect by GOP (9/3/2011 2:33:19 AM)

http://www.nytimes.com/2011/09/02/us/politics/02cong.html?_r=1&scp=2&sq=obama&st=cse

I would respond to the article's question by saying it's disrespect. Particularly when you have a senator (Mitch McConnell) stating that this year (quoted per the article) "his first goal was to see Mr. Obama defeated." It isn't even President Obama, it's "Mr. Obama". I think that's the one thing that has struck me over and over again is how Republicans refer to President Obama as Mr. Obama. Why the lack of respect with what is his title? But back to the senator's comment. Really? His number one goal is seeing Obama defeated? How about making your number one goal working for the people who made you senator? I don't think that's so much to ask and it should be the number one goal of every elected official. It's disgusting that any elected official feels that getting the current administration out of office takes priority over everything else.

subrob1967 -> RE: NYT article on lack of respect by GOP (9/3/2011 4:51:36 AM)

Did you ever stop and think that maybe he IS doing exactly what his constituents want? And for them making President Obama a one term President is their top priority? Or was when he was quoted?

As for the lack of respect, perhaps it's due to the President whining like a child about Republicans for the last three years. Or his forcing Obamacare down everyone's throat with closed door meetings, and locking Republicans out of the process when he had his super majority.

Face it, our President is a whiny Bitch.

The lack of respect has been evident for at least 16 years now. Where we are now is at the point where they're not afraid to say what they've thought all along, that being of returning power to their party. Their in this case applies equally to democrats and republicans.

And I have no issue with it. I have little respect for most people in politics. When I say little, you have to push pretty damned hard to find any.

Correction, your president. I'm not a citizen. And I don't recall seeing him whine. Do you have a reference to supply?

And as for what his constituents want? I rather doubt their first priority in life is to have Obama out of office. I would think that having a decent wage, good health care, to name but two, would be more important to most.

I think the lack of respect has been more so with this president than any other.

So you are saying it's acceptable? Perhaps if it wasn't, perhaps if politicians held themselves to a higher standard, that might be the start of your having more respect for the people who are in politics.

You're damned right I'm saying it is acceptable. And if you think the lack of respect is higher here, you either weren't around in the Bush/Clinton years or weren't paying attention.

The fact of the matter is that both parties have incorporated into their bases the most divisive thinkers we have in America today, that being those who cling to the extreme ends of left and right. Those are also the most vocal, the most active in attempting to modify the social and legislative landscapes, and those who often express either outright hatred or disgust with the other.

The age of respect is gone, and the people are the cause, not the politicians.

Moonhead -> RE: NYT article on lack of respect by GOP (9/3/2011 5:32:50 AM)

Care to name any of these hard leftists who have infested the Democrats, then? They look just as right leaning as the other bunch from this side of the pond...

(Not necessarily directed at StrangerThan, just a follow on post.)

I was thinking about the lack of respect during Bush's term as well. Clinton kind of brought it on himself, unfortunately. I have a hard time with him because he lied under oath, even though I don't so much care about what it is he lied about. Bush seemed to be disrespected by the people more so than democrat politicians and pundits. Obama seems to really get hit hard by other politicians, but I don't get the sense that the average person thinks he's an idiot, like they felt about Bush.

I think all of it is disgusting. We see what happens to men when they become President. They age overnight. It must be the most difficult job in the world for so many reasons, and these men - no matter their party affiliation - have something special in them to be able to wake up in the morning and face it every day. I imagine that upon being voted in, the new President has a really big wake-up call, learning everything that the rest of us will never know, and I would bet that many decisions are based on that information that the rest of us will never know. I'm not saying don't question what is done. But, chances are good that the President - whoever he or she is - is not some flaming idiot just because a battle was started in a war you don't agree with or a health care plan you don't back was begun. There are too many advisors and too much information worldwide for political decisions to be made without a whole bunch of forethought and evaluation. We get so angry when decisions are made that are not the decisions we would have made ourselves. To that end, again, I say...then run for office. Start local. Start to see what it's like on the other side of the table, when so much more comes into your decision-making than you could ever imagine as you pass judgment at the kitchen table during a Thanksgiving Day discussion.

The President earns the distinction of being called such. Anything less is disrespectful.

Well then, I guess you'd have to be American to understand then, wouldn't you? Maybe it's coming from a heritage of independence rather than relying on royalty to make your life better that makes the difference.

ArizonaBossMan -> RE: NYT article on lack of respect by GOP (9/3/2011 5:45:20 AM)

The NYT is a house organ, with emphasis on the word "organ," for the democrat national committee. They do have a good technology section, though. david pogue is outstanding. Let me sum it up for you. Illegals GOOD. Obama GOD LIKE. Taxes GOOD, especially on the "rich" (anybody with a job). Big Government GREAT; bigger government HEAVEN. Civility GOOD but only to shut up conservatives (leftists can say and do whatever they want with impunity). Pick and choose favorite laws and amendments like #1... ignore the rest, especially #2 and #10. Climate change... NEVER EVER QUESTION THEIR RELIGION! If you question (the heart of the scientific method), you are racists and homophobes.

I might have missed a few, but that pretty well sums it up. And why I find no room for discussion with leftists.

StrangerThan -> RE: NYT article on lack of respect by GOP (9/3/2011 5:47:26 AM)

I agree with you to an extent, Kaliko. However the usage of Mr. has been around for a while, and has several accepted forms, as in Mr. President, Mr. <insert last name here>. I do see the difference in always using  Mr. <insert last name here> but I think the instigation for it comes from the people. I'll also say I think the reason for it isn't so much the person who is targeted, but what he stands for in their eyes. Of course, the person does play a role, and in this case, Obama has a penchant for coming across as lecturing at times, and disaffected at other times. It could be having to deal with him directly that inspires some of it, but the bulk comes, I think from the loss of respect as a people.

And like I said, I have no issue with it. I personally wouldn't call Bush or Obama by president if I were talking to them. The first thing a president has to do is protect and defend the constitution, not try an end-around for an all out power grab, and both men are guilty.

But I see your perspective too, and also have no issue with you calling them what you want.

No,, I'm not going to waste my time giving you a tangent to argue over all day with your bullet point, powerpoint way of thinking.

Nor, will I ace, do research for you.

VioletGray -> RE: NYT article on lack of respect by GOP (9/3/2011 5:52:24 AM)

Obama hasn't faced an unusual amount of disrespect? Really?

Protestors showing up with signs with pictures of Obama with a bone through his nose?

People showing up armed to speeches?

Bill O'Reilly talking all over him in interviews? How often did that happen to Bush?

It took us three and a half years of his presidency to settle the debate about whether or not he was even an AMERICAN!

Strangerthan, it's one thing to disagree with someone else's politics, but Obama has done NOTHING to earn disrespect. If anything his problem is that he's been TOO nice.

I guess I could show up to a Bush speech armed with pictures of him as a monkey. That's better, right?

I don't know about interviews, because I never watched any with Bush, but the derision and over-talking certainly occurred afterwards.

What I'm saying Violet, is that beginning with Clinton, the outright disrespect for a president gained traction, grew during the Bush years, and is growing under Obama. Following that trend, the next president, whoever he or she might be, will face an even higher level of it. Imagine... Bachmann as your next president. Are you willing to get on the boat that we should all respectfully refer to her as President Bachmann, when one look around here gives good indication of what she's in for if she managed to win.

The nation doesn't respect them, and often along party lines. What we're seeing is the migration of that to levels where decorum once ruled - at least in the last 50 years or so. There was a time when people like Jackson just killed his opponents.

I'm an American, am considered extreme left by US cons and am actually a fairly moderate leftist. No one as far left as I am has much power in the Democratic party. Nothing like the power the far right exerts over the GOP.

Take the HCR law for instance. The far left position was national single payer. The moderate left position was a public option. No one in power on the Democratic side would even put a public option bill up for a vote (the idea of course had overwhelming popular support).

Another example is DADT. The far left and moderate left wanted a Truman type executive order allowing homosexuals to serve openly. Instead we have had 2 years of coddling the right wingers who are afraid teh gay might spread if our brave boys in uniform have to shower with an openly gay soldier.

Clinton and Obama have both been reviled as extreme leftists (socialists, communists etc.) while by any rational standard both are centrists.

lol, tell you what, approach it from the reverse side and tell us how we're all conservatives, then you can argue with some of the very people you want defined for you. Of course, they won't be elected officials, but I'm sure with your great wit you can follow the bread crumb trail.

Have fun.
