Aileen68 -> I'm going to Disney World (5/21/2006 3:47:11 PM)

So I'm spending a fortune and taking my little ones to Disney World.
Going in July (ugh) and staying in The Animal Kingom Lodge.
I haven't been to Disney in twenty years...back when Epcot just opened.
Any advice on surviving it in July with five and three year old wee ones.
I'm getting a fridge for the room, packing light and plan on trying to shift our daily schedule
so that we eat at off times and see the sites during meal times when there should be smaller lines.
We'll probably spend most days in the Magic Kingdom since that's where the princesses will be.
Thanks all.

Lots of water!  and there is now a thing called  "Fast Pass"....if there are any rides y'all want to go on, i suggest these.  The pass gives you a time slot of when you should be back.  You get in the fast pass line and away you go!

I have been there only once in July........i was not with wee ones though and it was rough.  The best time to go in my opinion is the week after Thanksgiving to the week before Christmas.   I have been about 9 times now and i will never do the July thing again.

Good luck and have TONS of fun.

Thorns and i will be heading there for our belated honeymoon, in December, i can't wait!!

I'm in Florida and very familiar with Disney World.  It's already getting hot down here, and July is honestly brutal.  Bring lots of sun screen and umbrellas.  Try to hit the rides with outdoor lines early morning (you are staying at a Disney resort so you should get into the parks earlier than those who aren't), or early evening when it's not too hot.  Toon Town in the Magic Kingdom has indoor lines for the Princesses/other characters, so in the heat of the day, you will be glad for the lines in the A/c.

Actually, you can often catch some of the princesses in Epcot. Belle and Esmeralda are in France. Jasmine is in Morocco. Ariel may be by the Living Seas (although they've changed it to a more Finding Nemo theme now). Snow White may show up in Germany. Poor Mulan, though. I don't think she gets any love. I've never seen her around.

Basically, whatever you want to know that hasn't already been answered, just ask! I've been there countless times and I was just there in Feburary of this year. I pretty much know the place backwards and forwards.

If you want to give the kids a treat and you can afford it, I suggest a Disney character breakfast at one of the hotels. It doesn't have to be your own since you can hop on the bus to Animal Kingdom and then get to any other resort on the grounds.

Miss Lorelei,

She'll have to get a park time schedule and find out which parks have the early mornings and late nights. The special early mornings and late nights for resort guests are not the same at every park every day.

So, Ma'am, when are You going back to Disney World? [;)]

Master wants to go to Disney World, too, but I spent so much time at Disneyland that I really have no interest.  What I really want to do is hit Universal Studios for Halloween Horror Nights.

Halloween Horror Nights is a lot of fun... though very crowded, but have a drink or two and who cares. lol.    Mardi Gras at Universal Studios is also fun.

Michael...

She will be given such a schedule when she checks into her hotel.  The early evening suggestion will work for anyone, any park, any day as it's just a less brutally hot, less crowded time to wait in line outside.  I am hoping to get back to Disney within the next three weeks while there is hope of a Spring breeze and less than 100% humidity.

Also, to the OP, riding the popular rides during the parade times is helpful... unless you want to see the parade. The character breakfasts/dinners are a great idea... but make the reservations now.  The Grand Floridian has a nice dinner with Princesses (and a breakfast with Mary Poppins and friends) and the hotel is beautiful to walk around and take pictures in... and you can take a boat ride over to it- kids like that.

Have you thought about hitting any water parks?

Prayer, drugs, and lots of those frozen lemon things.  They're really good.

My brother-in-law and I were there with my sister and my gf one summer.  We were pretty tired & thirsty and set out in search of a beer.  None to be found.  We asked one of the guys working there, sweeping the grounds.  "Hey, where can we get a beer in this place?"  He looked at us like we were pathetic.  "I'm sorry, sir.  I'm afraid you can't buy beer here.  This is the Magic Kingdom."

So be prepared for that.

HHN is tons of fun.  Totally cheesy, but fun.

Miss Lorelei,

Yes, Ma'am, she'll definitely get a schedule of the park times at the hotel. Those are a lot of great suggestions. You really know Your stuff when it comes to Disney. And I wish I was going back to Disney World sometime soon!

Aileen68 -> RE: I'm going to Disney World (5/23/2006 4:05:18 AM)

I'm figuring to hit whatever park opens early first, stay til about noon then go back to the hotel so the wee ones can nap (yeah right), but most likely swim in the pool.  Then head back out around dinner time for more rides.
I'm not planning on the water parks just because the little ones are still a little too small for that.  The pool at the hotel will be more than enough.
And I just found out that the Shuttle is scheduled to go up around the time we'll be there so we will most likely take a trip to see that and visit some relatives that live near Cape Canaveral at the same time.
Thanks all for the helpful info.

Sedation.     [:D]

Have fun, be sure to take them swimming, don't overfill their days because they will be on sensory overload as is.

God bless you, my kids want to do Disney World and my answer is when everyone is older, no way I am taking 5 kids there until they can somewhat look after themselves.

subrob1967 -> RE: I'm going to Disney World (5/23/2006 5:55:52 AM)

Backpacks, bottled water, and don't forget the Keys to the Kingdom tour.

MstrssPassion -> RE: I'm going to Disney World (5/23/2006 6:07:39 AM)

In July???

I agree, you are going to have a rough time. I am a native Floridian & being that I am accustomed to the heat, not even I would do Disney at this time.

Pack light, carry lots of water. Sunblock... not the knock-off brands, use "Coppertone Water Babies" just don't get it in their eyes. When I go I use those little lockers all over to stash additional water & carry a backpack with a couple of bottles & some type of snack such as granola bars.

The advice about picking indoor lines during the heat of the day is great, so is the fast track option.

One last word of advice. The first time I went to Disney I was about 8 or 9. We went on the "It's a Small World" ride & the damn thing jammed up & wouldn't move... I was stuck in a boat with snapping hippos above my head with that incessant song blaring. We were in there for close to an hour before my Father jumped ship & began to haul us out one by one on his shoulders.

Needless to say I was slightly scarred... LOL.

Then it came to the time I would take my own little ones to the park. I avoided this ride altogether several times. Eventually they said they really wanted to go. I ran it through my head... there is no way this could happen again.

Wrong!!!

The good thing was that we weren't stuck in there for an hour & I didn't have to wade in waist deep water to escape the music.

Think twice about this ride unless you really like the music. [:D]
